1 ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM: 5.U DATE: July 22, 2015 ****************************************************************************** SUBJECT: Instructional Type A Assignments The Regental Section Size Requirements are set forth in Board of Regents Policy 5:17.4, Instructional Funding, which makes a distinction between selected and non-selected courses which are depicted in Table 1. When making course assignments, the Instructional Methods Table has been used to provide guidance for campus personnel as they determine the most appropriate instructional method that should be recorded in Colleague. More recently, since Instructional Method A (Studio/Small Group Instruction/Small Ensemble) is exempt from the 10/7/4 rule, curriculum requests that seek to use this instructional type garner additional attention. To obtain approval, the university must establish that it can only teach groups of nine or fewer, and for those courses beyond small musical groups, there must be some sort of constraint (i.e., physical space, work stations, etc.) that precludes teaching 10 or more students. In essence, the university must make a case for why it can teach nine but not 10 or more students. Table 1 Selected & Non-Selected Instructional Method Types in the Regental System Selected Instructional Methods Non-Selected Instructional Methods Discussion/Recitation Studio / Small Group Instruction / Small Ensemble Seminar Competency-Based / Self-Paced Study Large Ensemble Clinical Laboratory or Experience Laboratory and Alternate Laboratory Independent Study or Private Instruction Physical Education Activity Design/Research Lecture Courses Tracking Internship/Practicum Thesis or Thesis/Research Sustaining Workshop Restricted PE Activity To evaluate the extent that this occurs over the course of a given year, data were sought from RIS to depict the number of course sections at each institution that had enrollments that exceeded the 10 student number that has traditionally been used as the baseline (see Table 2). (Continued) ****************************************************************************** RECOMMENDED ACTION Discussion and Recommendation.

2 Instructional Type A Assignments July 22, 2015 Page 2 of 4 During the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 terms a total of 408 courses in the Regental system with an Instructional Type A code had enrollments of 10 or more students. While the total number of sections varied in frequency at each institutions equivalent to student headcounts/fte, the average section size for this cohort of courses was approximately 17 students per section. When comparing across each institution averages were somewhat equivalent ranging from an average class size of 15 to just under 17 students. Table 2 Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 Course Sections with Instructional Method Code A With 10 or more Students Institution Sections with 10 or More Students Average Section Size with 10 or More Students BHSU DSU NSU SDSM&T 9 15 SDSU USD Table 3 below provides an overview of these data based on the assigned prefix for each of these identified courses. Art and Music/Music Ensemble were the most common prefix for the classification of courses that were identified and represented XX% of all course sections. A complete list of the 408 course sections with enrollments can be found in Attachment I. Finally, Tables 4 and 5 provide a comparison of section size data for the FY14 and FY15, both for the average enrollments based on all selected and non-selected instructional method types, and the total number of sections offered for each area. AAC representatives should be prepared to discuss the appropriate use of Instructional Method Type A, and whether additional explanation is warranted to better distinguish the appropriate use of the various instructional method types that are employed in the Regental system.
