LESSON 2 What you will learn Understanding Graphic Design Elements Line, Shape Colour, Texture, Mass & Space Understanding Graphic Design Principles Alignment, Balance, Contrast, Proximity & Repetition Basic Colour Theory How to apply to your own designs
ELEMENTS In Graphic Design there are Key Elements that enable us to communicate our message clearly. These are what make up our design. LINE SHAPE (FORM) COLOUR TEXTURE * MASS (SIZE) SPACE DISCLAIMER: There have been disagreements about the exact number, but to be honest, it doesn t matter, these are the main conceptual elements.
LINE One of the most important Elements of Design, line defines a subject s form or shape. DEPTH WIDTH A Line is a form with width & length, but no depth. Lines can be thick or thin, smooth or jagged, rigid & mechanical or organic and hand-drawn. The direction of a Line can convey mood. Lines can be literal or implied. LENGTH
LINE TYPES There are several types of lines defined by their use. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit. CONTOUR Praesent at leo purus. Phasellus mi tortor, mattis nec laoreet ut, tincidunt sed tortor. DIVIDING DECORATION GESTURE
LINE MEANINGS There are lots of ways to describe a given line. Each description has a characteristic.
LINE MEANINGS THIN
LINE MEANINGS THICK
LINE MEANINGS HORIZONTAL
LINE MEANINGS VERTICAL
LINE MEANINGS DIAGONAL
LINE MEANINGS CURVED
LINE MEANINGS ZIGZAG
LINE MEANINGS ARTIFICIAL /NATURAL
LINE MEANINGS DASHED
LINE PATTERNS A series of lines form a pattern. Patterns convey meaning in addition to the meaning of individual lines.

TEXTURE Texture refers to the characteristics of a surface that can be tactile as well as visual.
TEXTURE Keep it relative

MASS MASS EQUALS SIZE The physical mass or size is the actual dimensions of the piece.
MASS
MASS in ACTION!
SPACE White space doesn t need to be white! Space is the distance or area between, or around things. Gives the eye a visual rest. White Space is essential for two main reasons Legibility Aesthetic
SPACE
ELEMENTS WHAT WE COVERED LINE SHAPE (FORM) COLOUR TEXTURE MASS (SIZE) SPACE
PRINCIPLES The Principles of design are what we do to design elements. How we apply these determines how successful the design is. ALIGNMENT BALANCE CONTRAST PROXIMITY REPETITION
ALIGNMENT Allows you to arrange elements in a way that matches how people naturally scan the page. Helps balance your image so that it s visually appealing. Creates a visual connection between related elements. EDGE CENTRE
TEXT ALIGNMENTS Centered Alignment Left Alignment Right Alignment Justified Alignment Content is down the middle. Content is to the left. Content is to the right. Content is justified. Centre Alignments are considered the weakest CENTRE Left Alignments are Strong LEFT Right Alignments are Rare RIGHT Justified Alignments can b e T r i c k y. JUSTIFIED

BALANCE Balance is the weight distributed in the design by the placement of your elements. Provides stability and structure to a design.
BALANCE SYMMETRIC ASYMMETRIC
CONTRAST Contrast is the juxtaposition of opposing elements (opposite colours on the colour wheel, or value light/dark, or direction horizontal/vertical). Contrast allows us to emphasise or highlight key elements in your design. Without Contrast a design can seem uninteresting and not be clear what to look at first.
CONTRAST
CONTRAST TYPES Big WW W W small SIZE VALUE QUANTITY WEIGHT PLACEMENT TEXTURE
PROXIMITY Proximity creates relationship between elements. It provides a focal point. Proximity doesn't mean that elements have to be placed together, it means they should be visually connected in some way.
REPETITION Repetition strengthens a design by tying together individual elements. It helps create association and consistency. Repetition can create rhythm (a feeling of organised movement). LIKE ME!
