1 Lesson 69 Putting Learning objectives Children will: fit 2D over larger 2D. compose 2D to make larger. copy a model composed of 3D objects. Australian Curriculum Content Descriptions Measurement and Geometry Shape ACMMG022 Recognise and classify familiar twodimensional and three-dimensional objects using obvious features. ACMMG042 Describe and draw two-dimensional, with and without digital technologies. Using units of measurement ACMMG006 Use direct and indirect comparisons to decide which is longer, heavier or holds more, and explain reasoning in everyday language. ACMMG037 Compare and order several and objects based on length, area, volume and capacity using appropriate uniform informal units. Key vocabulary triangle, square, rectangle, semicircle, circle, compose, hexagon, 3D, object, model,, =, numbers 0 10, largest, area, far away, near, behind, in front, on, next to, smallest, share, equally, larger, smaller Extra assistance When teaching students to compose, reinforce their use of correct vocabulary. Ask them to name the 2D or 3D objects they used and also to name the shape they composed. Have them explain how they made the shape, encouraging them to use words such as fit, match, equal sides, same size, 2D and 3D. Use more complex vocabulary in your dialogue with them to familiarise them with the terminology, eg compose, composition and composite figure. Classroom activities Collage Provide students with a piece of paper and lots of cut out of coloured paper triangles, squares, rectangles, semicircles. Ask them to compose larger, recognisable using 2 or more of the coloured and glue them onto the paper. They must label each shape with its name when it is composed. Make it! Have students use a variety of recycled materials such as tubes and boxes as well as cardboard they can cut and shape to create a recognisable object from 3D. Then ask them to write a label naming the object and the 3D they used to make it, for example: a rocket cylinder, cone, cube.
