2 2 Section A Marked out of minutes 1. This question is about Product Analysis. It is worth 15 marks. The photographs show a desk calendar with a built in stand and a binding that allows pages to be flipped over. The questions that follow are about the calendar. The calendar is 140mm wide and 160mm tall. There is one page for each month and front and back covers. The pages are full colour printed on 100gsm gloss white paper. The covers are 180gsm gloss colour printed white paper. The built in stand is 80mm wide when fully opened. The stand is made from 350micron matt white boxboard. The wire binding allows the pages to be flipped over to show the calendar for the month.

3 3 (a) Before starting to design the calendar a Design Specification was written. State with as much detail as you can, what you think was the most important Design Specification point for each of the following aspects. One has been done for you. (i) The cost of the calendar. The calendar must sell for no more than 4.99 to make sure that there are plenty of sales for the calendar and still make a profit for the manufacturer. (ii) The function of the calendar. [2] (iii) The sizes of the calendar. [2] (iv) The appearance of the calendar. [2] (b) State one property of 350 micron white boxboard that makes it the most suitable material for the stand. 4 4 (d) The calendar has to appeal to customers. (i) State the target market for the calendar. [1] (ii) Describe the appeal of the calendar to the target market. [2] (e) The chart shows the costs of producing the calendar. Study the chart and answer the questions that follow. 6 6 3. This question is about the designers that you have studied. It is worth a total of 10 marks. During your course you have studied the work of David Carson and Peter Saville. (a) State the name of the designer of each of the pieces of work shown below. [2] (b) Select one of the designers you have studied and write a short essay describing the range of their work and the impact they have had on Graphic Design. 7 7 4. This question is about the Design Process and how it is used. It is worth a total of 25 marks. (a) When designing a product, developing a good solution is very important. (i) Underline the stage of the design process that is done before development. 8 8 (b) A manufacturer of body care products has decided to market small packs of its products for use when on holiday. The products will be in small bottles as shown. The bottles will be identical in shape so they need clear labels to show what they contain. The product range is called SMOOTH The target market is young women. In the spaces provided design an appropriate logo that can be used on the label for the bottles. Specification for logo: uses three colours; appeals to young women; allows the customer to clearly identify the product range. Marks will be awarded for: (i) a design that would appeal to young women; [2] (ii) using three colours; [1] (iii) the quality of the presentation drawing. [3]
