3 ADA Sign Summary The following rules apply to signs that identify a room, space or area. Informational and directional signs don t require Braille or raised characters, however follow many of the other requirements. Please read this entire guide for a complete overview. 1 Signs that identify a room, space or area shall have raised characters and Braille. 5 Characters / Fonts Fonts for room and area identification are required to be sans serif and shall not be italic, oblique, script or decorative. 6 Braille Requirements There are many rules that govern proper Braille use: ADA Compliant NOT Compliant Braille shall be dome shaped. t flat or pointed. Braille shall be precisely sized and spaced. Braille shall be ½ 8 to ½ below last line of text. Braille shall be contracted Grade II. Braille shall be in lower case except for proper names, acronyms or as a letter in a room number (B20). 7 Pictograms This chart shows typical pictograms and their proper usage. Pictograms used in identifying a room or space shall be 6 within a 6 high field. There is no specific rule on the height of the pictgram itself. Required Pictograms. 6 high background field required. Room Signs pictograms are not required, but are recommended. 8 Spacing Requirements /8 Minimum space around any raised element Proper spacing is important for anyone trying to feel or touch a sign. 11 Mounting Requirements Below are general guidelines for mounting room and overhead signs. Make sure to check with your State and/or local codes, as well as your building inspector before installing signs Minimum Center sign between an 18 minimum area and the center of the tactile characters. ROOM OR AREA SIGNAGE Maximum mounting height of tactile characters is 60 above floor to baseline of characters. On double doors, with both leafs active, the sign shall be mounted on the right side. When there is not enough wall space for mounting the sign, use the nearest adjacent wall. Ceiling or wall projection signs must have a minimum clearance of 80 from bottom of sign to the floor. 18 Signs containing tactile characters shall be located so that a clear floor space of 18 minimum by 18 minimum, centered on the tactile characters, is provided beyond the arc of any door swing between the closed position and 45 degree open position. 17 Restroom Signs ADA restroom signs require Braille and should display the gender pictogram. California law also requires the 12 Circle/Triangle door sign. 29 Mounting Options Shown are a few mounting options available. Always test the appropriate mounting technique before actual installation. We recommend using a high quality silicone adhesive in conjunction with most of the mounting methods below. Double Faced Tape Pressure sensitive foam tape.
