1 The following instructions will be used to help you create a Pencil using Solidworks. These instructions are ordered to make the process as simple as possible. Deviating from the order, or not following the instructions exactly, may cause the program to not work right, the addition of an unwanted shape, or deletion of our drawing. Please read all the directions before you start your drawing. Many directions have a picture example and explanation of what you will be expected to do. 1. Open Solidworks, create a New Part, and Save the file into Documents (or My Documents). 2. When you save your file, change the file name to Pencil. Click Save. 3. Draw a circle in the Front Plane. a. Start by clicking the Sketch tab in the Command Manager Tool Bar (see right) b. Click the Sketch button the top left corner of the tool bar and choose the Circle tool. c. Select the Front Plane. Notice, when you roll your mouse over a plane, the outline of the plane is highlighted in orange. The orange outline tells you which plane you are about to click on. It is important to create your parts in the front plane.

2 d. Sketch a Circle start by placing your mouse over the Origin Point (where the to red lines meet). Hold down the Left Mouse Button, drag your mouse out, and release the button to finish your circle. Click the green check mark. 4. Change the size of your circle to 10. a. Click Smart Dimension, found next to the Sketch button in the Command Manager Tool Bar. b. Hold your mouse over the edge of the circle (it will highlight the edge in orange). c. Click on the edge of the circle one time. You will see the diameter of the circle appear wherever the mouse pointer is (see right). Drag the mouse to the inside of the circle (not the center point) and click again. d. The modify box will appear. Set the diameter of the circle to 10. Click the Green Check mark on the modify box. e. Click Exit Sketch (in the Command Manager Tool Bar) 5. Creating the Pencil Base/Shaft a. Click on your Sketch in the Part Tree on the left side of the screen. The Sketch number may vary depending on how many mistakes you may have made up to this point.

3 b. Click on the Features tab, on the Command Manager Tool Bar. c. Click the Extrude Boss/Base Button d. On the left hand side of the screen, the Boss- Extrude Property Manager will appear. Make sure the End Condition is Blind. Set the Depth to 100. The circle will expand past the border of the window. To see the entire drawing, you will need to click Zoom to Fit (See below) e. Click the Green Check in the Boss- Extrude Property Manager to finalize the drawing. 6. Creating the Eraser a. In the Command Manager Tool Bar, Click Fillet (see right). b. Hold the mouse pointer over the back edge of the cylinder. The edge will turn orange when selected (see right). Click on that edge. In the Properties Manager (Left side of the screen), set the Radius to 5. Click the Green Check mark.

4 7. Creating the Pencil Point a. Locate the Filet Tool. Click the arrow under the Filet tool to expand the menu. Click on Chamfer. b. Hold the mouse pointer over the front edge of the cylinder (similar to the Eraser). When edge turns orange, click on that edge. c. In the Property Manager, enter 7 for the Distance and 30 for the Angle. d. The end result should look like the image to the right. 8. Making it look like a Pencil a. You can change the appearance of your drawing to make it look like a pencil. Click on the Eraser. b. In the same tool bar as Zoom to Fit and View Orientation click on Edit Appearance (see right). c. In the Property Manager that appears on the left, choose a color for the Eraser. Click on the Green Check mark. d. Repeat the same steps for the Body/Shaft of the Pencil. e. For the tip of the pencil, Click Edit Appearance (see above). f. In the Menu that appears on the right, click the + next to Appearances and select Organic.

5 g. Choose a style of wood grain and click the Green Check to finalize your Pencil 9. Saving and Submitting a. To turn in your drawing to Canvas

g. Click once on the left vertical line of the rectangle.

g. Click once on the left vertical line of the rectangle. This drawing will require you to a model of a truck as a Solidworks Part. Please be sure to read the directions carefully before constructing the truck in Solidworks. Before submitting you will be required
