The Denar Field Inspection Gage The Denar Field Inspection Gage is an optical inspection gage used to calibrate Denar Articulators (D5A, Mark II, Combi, Combi II, Anamark and Automark) to tolerances which allow the transfer of mounted casts between calibrated articulators. Scope The gage consists of an upper member called the scope and a lower member called the stage. The gage is supplied with two inter-bow gage pins. Inter-Bow Gage Pine No. 1 and Inter-Bow Gage Pin No. 2 (Figure 1). 4 Figure 1 Stage #1 Pin #2 Pin Care of Denar Field Inspection Gage The Denar Field Inspection Gage is a precision instrument capable of making measurements in three directions. To insure its continued accuracy, the components should be handled carefully and not be allowed to come to rest on a hard surface with a force which could cause a nick or deformation of the bearing surface. When a component is not in use it should be kept in its protective case. It is advisable to have a piece of cork, rubber, cardboard or other soft, lint-free surface to rest the gage components on when they are not mounted in their case or on a Denar Instrument. The upper member should not be picked up using the scopes or dial indicators as handles.

IMPORTANT: There are several socket set screws on both members of the Field Inspection Gage. Do not attempt to turn these screws with a wrench. These screws are for use of factory authorized personnel only. Manipulation of these screws can affect the accuracy of the instrument. For accuracy, it is important that the bearing surfaces of the Field Inspection Gage components and articulators be wiped clean of foreign material prior to their use (Figure 2). Functions of Denar Field Inspection Gage The Denar Inspection Gage is used to: 1. Verify the accuracy of the Denar Articulator. 2. Calibrate articulators in a family so that casts can be accurately transferred from one calibrated articulator to another calibrated articulator. This instruction manual details the basic calibration procedure for an articulator. Secondly, it details the procedure for verifying the accuracy of an articulator which is assumed to be in specification and is being set up for use to fabricate an occlusal restoration. Figure 2 5

Basic Calibration Procedure of an Articulator Figure 3 Vertical Alignment Prior to using the Field Inspection Gage to align a Denar Articulator, the distance between the maxillary and mandibular bows (inter-bow distance) of the articulator must be precisely established by means of the inter-bow gage pin No. 1. To use this pin the incisal pin and the incisal table are removed and the inter-bow gage pin No. 1 is secured in position as shown in Figure 3. Before mounting the Field Inspection Gage in an articulator make sure that the bearing surfaces are wiped clean of all foreign material. Carefully and without forcing, mount the gage components flush to the articulator bow as illustrated in Figure 4. Make sure to turn the gage component relative to the articulator bow in the same direction which the lockscrew is turned as the gage is secured to the bow of the articulator. 6

It is important that the operator use a consistent amount of torque when tightening lockscrews to secure mounting plates or a Field Inspection Gage to the bows of an articulator. Tighten the lockscrew without forcing. When placing a gage component onto the bow of an articulator the index holes on the surface of the gage that faces the articulator bow should be carefully and visually located over their respective dowel pin on the bow of the articulator to prevent damage to the bearing surface of the gage. DO NOT SLIDE THE GAGE laterally over the dowel pins in an attempt to locate the dowel pins in the gage by feel. This can cause damage if done with too much force. Figure 5 illustrates the Field Inspection Gage and inter-bow gage pin 1 mounted in the articulator. At this time you will note that a space of approximately 1/4 to 1/2 millimeter exists between the scope and the stage. The condyles are at the correct position if, when looking through the scope, the crosshairs are a deep blue. The reference position adjustments are then made as required. Specific procedures for each Denar Articulator are provided in the sections following this basic procedure. Figure 4 Figure 5 Space 7

OPTIONAL: If you wish to confirm that your gage is accurate proceed in the following manner. On the back of the stage you will find a calibration record as illustrated in Figure 6. The two large circles represent the faces of the dial indicators on the right and left sides of the gage as viewed from the rear. On each circle is a scribed calibration mark which is usually found between the -10 and -20 graduations. Each graduation represents one-half thousandth of an inch (.0005 ). These readings are the values which the dial indicators on the respective sides of the instruments should read when the scope is allowed to rest on the stage by loosening the maxillary lockscrew while the Field Inspection Gage is mounted in an articulator. OR: On a flat surface and white paper, stack gage as shown in Figure 1 on Page 4. Align crosshairs (yellow in color) with the number scale. Verify accuracy of dial indicators as explained above. Figure 6 8

Horizontal Alignment The articulator must be in specification in the vertical dimension before horizontal alignment is made. On the scope member of the Filed Inspection Gage are two forty power (40X) monocular scopes. You are to look through these scopes one at a time. In each scope is a reticle graduated in one thousandths of an inch (.001 ) increments in four direction off a centric dot as illustrated in Figure 7A. On the lateral wings of the stage are crosshair targets as illustrated in Figure 7B. If an articulator is in perfect specification anterio-posteriorly and medio-laterally, the intersection of the target crosshairs will touch the centric dot of the reticle as in Figure 7C when viewed through the scope. If the articulator is out of specification as illustrated in Figure 8, the amount it is out of specification can be measured with the graduated reticle. For example, Figure 8 illustrates the view through the scope of an articulator out of specification ten thousandths of an inch (.010 ) medio-laterally and eight thousandths of an inch (.008 ) anterioposteriorly. A C Figure 7 Left C Front B Right Specific procedures for each Denar Articulator are provided in the sections following this basic procedure. Figure 8 Back 9

Procedure for Denar Anamark, Combi II or Automark Articulator 1. Set protrusive at 25 (Anamark and Combi II only). 2. Mount upper and lower stages to the articulator, using the gage pin in place of incisal pin and table. 3. Place upper bow onto lower and lock the latch. 4. To adjust the height: use the screws in the back of the lower crossbar. Loosen the top screw, adjust height with the bottom screw. When height is set to 0 on both sides, tighten the top screw to lock height (Figure 9). Open and close latch several times to assure proper setting. NOTE: If the crosshairs are red or yellow, the condyles are adjusted too low and must be brought back to the zero position by turning the bottom screw clockwise until the crosshairs are deep blue. If the crosshairs are light blue to almost invisible, the condyles are adjusted too high and must be brought back to the zero position by turning the bottom screw counterclockwise until the crosshairs are deep blue. 10

5. To center: with the latch locked and condyle screws locked, loosen the 4 screws in the top of the crossbar (Figure 9). Turn them approximately 1 full turn. Now you can push on the crossbar and move the entire upper unit as one piece. Look down into the scopes to watch the crosshairs moving. The number scale has a dot for the center and calibrations are.001 of an inch. Crosshairs are either blue or purple when height is set correctly. Use the crossbar to adjust the centering and bring BOTH crosshairs exactly over the number scales (left and right). The intersection of the crosshair will line up with the intersection of the number scale. When both sides are exactly lined up, tighten the 4 screws on the top of the crossbar, using an X pattern for tightening (back right screw, front left, front right, back left, Figure 7). Sometimes the crossbar will shift slightly during tightening. If this happens consistently, you can offset the crosshairs so this shifting will pull into center. If you experience a problem with the centering when the latch is opened and closed, or a problem with maintaining height, return to us for repair. 12 Procedure for Denar Combi Articulator 1. Using 20 inserts in upper bow, loosen insert knobs, apply pressure to insert, pusing it to extreme otuside and tighten knob to hold insert. Repeat for the other side. 2. Mount upper and lower stages to articulator, using the gage pin in place of incisal pin and table. 3. Place upper bow onto lower and lock the latch. Loosen one insert knob. This will cause the insert to adjust. Repeat on opposite side (again the insert will adjust) and tighten the knob. 12

Use the crossbar to adjust the centering and bring BOTH crosshairs exactly over the number scales (left and right, Figure 7). The intersection of the crosshair will line up with the intersection of the number scale. When both sides are exactly lined up, tighten the 4 screws on the top of the crossbar, using an X pattern for tightening (back right screw, front left, front right, back left). Sometimes the crossbar will shift slightly during tightening. If this happens consistently, you can offset the crosshairs so this shifting will pull into center. If you experience a problem with the centering when the latch is opened and closed, or a problem with maintaining height, return to us for repair. 14 Procedure for Denar Mark II Articulator 1. Set protrusive at 25, and loosen immediate side shift. 2. Mount upper and lower stages to articulator, using the gage pin in place of incisal pin and table. 3. Place upper bow onto lower and lock the latch. 4. To adjust the height: use the screws in the back of the lower crossbar. Loosen the top screw, adjust height with the bottom screw. When height is set to 0 on both sides, tighten the top screw to lock height (Figure 9). Open and close latch several times to assure proper setting. Set the immediate side shift adjustment until the medial walls contact the condyle balls and lock in place, verify 0 lines align properly. 14

16 16 Procedure for Denar D5A Articulator 1. Adjust the condylar controls of the articulator to the following settings: Protrusive Condylar Path 30 degrees Immediate Sideshift 0 millimeters Progressive Sideshift 5 degrees Top Wall Adjustment 0 degrees Rear Wall Adjustment 0 degrees Vertical Axis Adjustment 55 millimeters The vertical axis adjustment (inter-condylar distance) is set to 55 millimeters (the conventional anatomic average). The operator will have access to the horizontal adjustment lockscrews of the horizontal crossbar of the mandibular bow as illustrated in Figure Mount upper and lower stages to articulator, using the gage pin in place of incisal pin and table. 3. Place upper bow onto lower and lock the latch. 4. To adjust the height: On the lateral aspects of the condylar supports are a vertical adjustment (A) and vertical adjustment lockscrew (B) as illustrated in Figure 11. Loosen the vertical adjustment lockscrews on both sides of the articulator. A plus reading indicates that the condyles

are below the desired height. Note that when you change the height of one condyle it affects the reading on both dial indicators. Snug the vertical adjustment lockscrews to firmly seat the shaft supporting the condylar elements in their housings but do not tighten all the way. At this time both condylar elements are just below the desired height. Alternately tighten the vertical adjustment screws in small increments on the right and left sides of the instrument until both dial indicators read 0. Tighten the vertical adjustment lockscrews to secure the condylar elements in this position. Horizontal Figure 10 B A Vertical Figure 11 17

Figure 12 Figure 13 Screws 5. To center: Loosen the horizontal adjustment lockscrews illustrated in Figure 13 on both sides of the articulator the minimum amount necessary to allow horizontal movement of the horizontal crossbar. Engage the centric latch of the articulator. While maintaining slight downward pressure on the horizontal crossbar of the lower member of the articulator to keep the horizontal crossbar seated flush on the crossbar supports, slide the horizontal plane until the centric dots are on the junction of the crosshair targets as viewed through both scopes. Then while carefully maintaining the crossbar position incrementally tighten, using an X pattern for tightening (back right screw, front left, front right, back left). NOTE: On the back of the stage is a calibration record as illustrated in Figure 12. The two small circles on the lower portion of the record are the calibration records for the scopes on the respective sides of the articulator. Each graduation off the centric dot represents one thousandths of an inch (.001 ). The total diameter of reach small circle represents a little over four thousandths of an inch (.004 ), or about the thickness of normal writing paper. In each of the small circles you will find a scribed cross mark. This mark represents the true centric position indicated by the scribed cross marked on the calibration record. 18

This calibration system is used because in manufacturing, slight creepage of the centric dot of the reticle can occur which cannot be controlled. This calibration system allows for correction of this error and maximum accuracy. If you experience a problem with the centering when the latch is opened and closed, or a problem with maintaining height, return to us for repair. Reinsertion of the Adjustable Incisal Pin After an articulator is properly aligned by means of a Field Inspection Gage, the most convenient way to set the adjustable incisal pin to an accurate zero position is to remove the Inter-Bow Gage Pin No. 1 and reisnert the incisal table and adjustable incisal pin set to zero. If the dial indicators do not read zero the height of the adjustable incisal pin can be minutely adjusted until the dial indicators read zero. 19

What to do when casts are mounted in a Mark II out of specification When a dentist sends full arch casts mounted in a Mark II to the laboratory for construction of the restoration, the first thing the technician does is inspect the Mark II with the Field Inspection Gage to confirm that it is in specification. If the Mark II is out of specification proceed in the following manner. Obtain a Denar Field Inspection Report Form (Figure 14) and mark on the form the field gage readings when the gage is mounted in the Mark II out of specification. Figure 14 illustrates a completed Denar Field Inspection Report form. You will note on the left scope (lower left circle in Figure 14) the Mark II centric position is two thousandths of an inch down and to the right of the scope s centric dot. On the right scope the Mark II centric position is seven thousandths of an inch down and two thousandths of an inch to the right of the scope s centric dot. The dial indicators both read zero. left Figure 14 indicators scopes RiGht Denar FielD inspection GaGe report Form D167 RelatoR No. articulator No. DoctoR or Facility GaGe No. Date inspector FN 8020-F ac R1108 The technician proceeds by calibrating an articulator by means of the field gage to these settings to put the articulator s position in specification with the centric position of the Mark II known to be out of specification. He then proceeds to fabricate the restoration in the usual manner. 20

Figure 15 Master Female Gage (Factory Tooling) Figure 15 illustrates a Field Inspection Gage mounted in a Denar Master Female Gage. A Denar Master Female Gage is a precision Denar tool used to inspect and calibrate Field Inspection Gages. Master Female Gages are located at the Whip Mix West factory. If a dentist or laboratory has a Denar Field Inspection Gage which is suspected to be damaged, the gage may be sent to Whip Mix for inspection to confirm its accuracy. If the gage is only slightly out of specification the factory can recalibrate the gage by replacing the calibration record on the back of the stage with a new record giving accurate calibration settings. 21
