3 1.0 PREFACE The post hike log is the final component of every hike and is key to passing the hike component in various standards. The post hike log is a reflection of the candidate s journey, encompassing his empirical observations of his surroundings and an attempt to communicate his observations through drawings and write-ups. To many aspiring candidates, the task of completing the post hike log proves a significant challenge to them, not only dealing with time pressure but to reach the high standards of the post hike log as well. The areas of difficulty identified lies in three main components of the post hike log the area sketch, floorplan and the checkpoint description. These three components are the make or break factor of hike logs and many candidates fail to meet the set expectations in each respective component. Henceforth, this guide is created for candidates embarking on their hikes to learn the process of producing a post hike log of high quality and with effective communication in the three components aforementioned. This guide will provide and equip prospective candidates with the necessary skillset that is fundamental in producing a post hike log that is of high standard. This guide highly recommends all candidates to go through the entire guide thoroughly before embarking on the hike. 3

4 2.0 AREA SKETCH - ST. JOSEPH S PELANDOK SCOUT GROUP Information Throughout the entire hike, the candidate will be visiting various checkpoints where he will be required to sketch the surroundings around the checkpoint. This component tests the observational ability of the candidate and the skills to transfer his observations into paper. 2.2 Assessment Assessment on the area sketch component scrutinises mainly upon the following criteria: 1. Clarity of drawings 2. Neatness 3. Ability to illustrate key details and landmarks inside sketches 2.3 Key Pointers 1. Use a rough paper for the initial sketch, do not use the actual paper provided. 2. Spend up to 15 minutes drawing this. As long as the sketches make sense to you in the rough copy it is fine. 3. Always sketch a bigger area than what is required as it ensures that you can fit everything into area provided by the post hike log and crop off the excess. You do not want to end up in the case of having blank spaces in your area sketch because you drew less area than required. 4. As the candidate, you should be the one doing this component as you understand your own drawings/symbols best. 5. For First Class and Chief Commissioner s Award hike candidates, utilise your time wisely at the rest point to transfer every sketch in your rough paper into the post hike log. Do not sleep until you have completed transferring everything into your log as you will not have enough time to complete the log the next day. 2.4 Approach 1. Follow a scale of 1:1000 (essentially, 1cm is 10 metres). 2. North Arrow must be provided and has to be pointing in a standardised direction in all your checkpoint sketches. 3. Make sure you follow closely to your legend sheet provided in your pre-hike log. Everything drawn in your area plan must be present in the legend. 4. Road lanes should be 3mm long, road grass borders should be 2mm long and walking pavements 2mm long (with the exception for wider ones). 5. Include private estate numbers, HDB block numbers and names of buildings and condominiums. 6. Be very detailed, include traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, dustbins, lamp posts, et cetera. 7. Always use a ruler when sketching on the actual post hike log to keep your drawings neat, tidy and presentable to the examiner. 4

7 3.0 FLOORPLAN 3.1 Information During the hike, some of the checkpoints are buildings. In order to facilitate the clarity of communication with the examiner, candidates are expected to sketch the floorplan of the compound. This component tests the spatial awareness of the candidates and their ability to sketch at a micro-level. 3.2 Assessment Assessment on the area sketch component scrutinises mainly upon the following criteria: 1. Clarity of drawings 2. Neatness 3. Ability to illustrate key details inside sketches 3.3 Key Pointers 1. Use a rough paper for the initial sketch, do not use the actual paper provided. 2. Spend up to 15 minutes drawing this. 3. Draw the entire compound. The floorplan only needs the sketch for the 1 st level of the checkpoint (in event that it is a multi-storey building) 4. If the checkpoint is a police post or fire station, floorplan is not required. 5. Delegate this to a companion to do the rough sketch. 6. For First Class and Chief Commissioner s Award hike candidates, utilise your time wisely at the rest point to transfer every sketch in your rough paper into the post hike log. Do not sleep until you have completed transferring everything into your log as you will not have enough time to complete the log the next day. 3.4 Approach 1. Follow a scale of 1:250 or 1:500 for larger checkpoints. 2. North Arrow must be provided and has to be pointing in a standardised direction in all your checkpoint sketches. Floorplan has to be synced with the orientation of the area sketches. 3. Make sure you follow closely to your legend sheet provided in your pre-hike log. Everything drawn in your area plan must be present in the legend. 4. Include furniture, doors, elevators, rooms, et cetera. 5. Be very detailed. 6. Always use a ruler when sketching on the actual post hike log to keep your drawings neat, tidy and presentable to the examiner. 7

8 4.0 CHECKPOINT DESCRIPTION 4.1 Information Throughout the entire hike, candidates are expected to record their observations of the surroundings. This component tests candidates in their ability to communicate clearly to the examiner on his observations and findings about the checkpoint visited during the hike. 4.2 Assessment Assessment on the area sketch component scrutinises mainly upon the following criteria: 1. Clarity in explanation 2. Detail and depth of explanation 3. Ability to illustrate understanding of the checkpoint, surrounding area and draw key inferences. 4.3 Key Pointers 1. Use a rough paper for the initial writeup, do not use the actual paper provided. 2. Spend up to 15 minutes writing. 3. Write in the rough description in point form. 4. Follow the given format below as best as possible. 5. Write in prose in the post hike log. 4.4 Approach 1. General Information of Checkpoint: a. Time of arrival b. Weather c. Human density (Low/Moderate/High, give justification) d. Type of humans present at checkpoint (age/religion, etc.) e. Vehicle Density (Low/Moderate/High, give justification) f. Type of Vehicles (Motorcycles, Cars, Busses, etc.) 2. Building of Checkpoint (Ignore this section if you are visiting a bridge/road junction) a. Colour of building b. Number of floors c. Number of lifts and staircases d. Shape and tints of the windows e. Whether the building looks old/renovated f. Number of dustbins around g. Number of fire exits h. Colour of fencing i. Amenities, facilities or services offered 3. Checkpoint Information a. Nearest bus stop + name of bus stop b. Nearest MRT station (if any), station number, MRT line. 8

9 4. 8 Directions description (Always start from North -> North-East -> East -> South East -> South -> South-West -> West -> North-West) a. 8 directions of checkpoint (internal), taking reference from your floorplan. b. 8 directions of checkpoint (external), taking reference from your area sketch. i. 8 directions description has to mention the following, but not limited to: 1. Name of buildings 2. Grass Patch (only if the grass patch is very big) 3. Name of shop 4. Housing Estate number, colour, number of floors 5. HDB block number, colour, number of floors 6. Condominium name, colour, number of floors 7. Roads: number of lanes, how many directions, is there a divider, is there a fencing on the divider? 5. Time of departure 9
