1. Principle of Design Rhythm The element, veranda and windows, are being repeated. Curved and vertical Lines Some sides of the building are just vertical however the front of it is curved. 2. Principle of Design Balance Horizontal Balance. The parts on the left and right sides are equal when you put a line through the center of the building Vertical Line Vertical Line. It represents stability, CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Page 1

3. Principle of Design Emphasis The Gristedes Mega Store logo attracts an individual s eyes through size and color. There is a bit of contrast too that makes it easier to notice. : Line It is a horizontal line and represents calmness, peace and relaxation. Makes it easier for people to be at ease when shopping there. CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Page 2

4. Principle of Design Balance Horizontal Balance. The parts on the left and right sides are equal when you put a line through the center of the building. : Line and Color Vertical Line, the building is straight on all sides, none of the sides are slanted or curved. The color makes it fit in with the area due to the trees and the shade they provide. 5. Principle of Design Emphasis The Starbucks logo and sign catches people s eyes. It lights up which catches some people s interest. Color While the building is dark the sign is a bright white which makes it stand out from the building it self. CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Page 3

6. Principle of Design Balance The building is the same on both sides making it horizontally balanced Texture and Color The building looks smooth and reflective from all the windows and light coloring. CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Page 4

7. Principle of Design Rhythm Set Rhythm. It is all the same windows and structure on each side of the building Texture and Color Light colors with columns of darkness, it also looks smooth instead of rough. 8. Principle of Design Balance and Form and Shape Symmetrical or Formal Balance and Horizontal Balance. The elements in the design are identical in relation to a centerline and the left/right sides are identical. The shape of the building is just the building going straight up and it is bigger than the buildings around it. : Line and Rhythm CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Page 5

It is tall and represents dignity, formality, stability and strength. It meets all the requirements to be defined as a vertical line. The windows as well as other things are being repeated over and over again in a pattern which can be easily seen. 9. Principle of Design Balance and space Horizontal Balance. It was shaped like an H so both sides were equal. The inside of the H was spacious. Texture Rough Surface Texture. It s clear from the point of view that the building doesn t reflect much light and appears darker. CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Page 6

10. Principle of Design Contrast While the building is orange the sign is white and the words are big and red. Color The colors are used mostly to show things like warmth (orange and red) so it fits the fact that it is a Mattress store. CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity Design Principles and Elements Page 7
