1 11/29/2005-5:00 pm - 6:30 pm Room:Pelican 2 (Swan) Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort Orlando, Florida Autodesk Revit Building in the Classroom, Learned from Experience Lloyd Cannaday - Patrick Henry Community College ED22-2 Learn why and how to teach Autodesk Revit in your classroom. Curriculum, syllabus, presentations, tricks, tips, resources, and projects will be discussed. Discover a better way to cover more architectural drafting content during a limited period, and also teach building construction, techniques, and materials. Move from a paradigm of teaching architectural drafting to teaching architecture modeling. Revit's parametric modeling capabilities and shallow learning curve will allow your students to learn more architecture in each class. About the Speaker: Lloyd has 27 years of experience in drafting and CADD. He is the first CADD faculty to receive the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) David R. Pierce Faculty Technology Award. Using Autodesk products since 1987, five of his high school seniors won several awards in national TSA competitions in Since then, Lloyd has taught many different Autodesk products at the community college level. He also helped convince Virginia Tech to switch from CADKEY to AutoCAD in the early 90s. Lloyd earned a BS in Psychology and Technology Education and a Masters in Vocational-Technical Education from Virginia Tech. lcannaday@ph.vccs.edu

3 Learn why and how to teach Autodesk Revit Building TM in your classroom. Topics Covered Best practices for using Revit Building to teach architectural drafting. Understanding how to use Revit Building to teach construction techniques, methods and materials. Develop an understanding of parametric architectural modeling. Resources for teaching Revit Building. Curriculum, syllabus, presentations, tricks, tips, resources, and student projects will be discussed. Revit Building ROCKS Discover a better way to cover more architectural drafting content during a limited period, and also teach building construction, techniques, and materials. Move from a paradigm of teaching architectural drafting to teaching architectural modeling. Revit Building's parametric modeling capabilities and shallow learning curve will allow your students to learn more architecture, building procedures, materials and documentation during the short time they are in class. Classes I Teach 7 Class Sections Four Covering Architectural with Revit Building One covering Inventor I & II One covering AutoCAD I& II Introduction to Engineering Each is a 4 hour per week 60 Clock Hour Course One high school class for two hours each day bussed in from two high schools, taking Revit Building I and II [Residential Architectural Drafting and Commercial Architectural Drafting and Detailing] Each student receives 6 college credits and 1 high school credit per semester. 19 students (16 work stations): one student on the instructor's computer and one student on my office computer and one student designated instructor's assistant on those days when everybody is present. Students are not hand picked. Who ever desires to sign up for the PHCC classes may do so. Afternoon class - Twice per week Mostly Revit Building I 4 Revit Building II students A few students taking AutoCAD, Inventor and Maya Monday evening class Mostly Revit Building I 4 Revit Building II students Tuesday evening class Inventor I, II & III Maya Capstone Course Wednesday evening class AutoCAD I and II (2D only) Thursday evening class Introduction to Engineering Technology Used Robotel computer control system Hardwire system Instantaneous Allows instructor to transmit any computer screen to any other single or multiple screens Allows instructor to control who has keyboard control. Allows instructor to listen and talk to students individually, some, many or all via headphones and mikes Allows instructor to quickly look at a student s computer screen, ask pertinent questions, take keyboard control if necessary The instructor can then either advise and watch or take control and demonstrate; and then decide to broadcast to selected students 2
4 Allows instructor to show student required information and then undo instructor s work and watch student perform activity. System show when student are requesting assistance and which flashes the student that s been waiting the longest. Similar to NetOp and similar software applications with some of the same functionally. Allows instructor to quickly assign a student that has already been helped through a tough patch to take control of a student s computer that needs assistance. Allows instructor to blank student screens when presenting other material. It has improved the functioning of the CADD courses I teach by at least 30%. I could not imagine teaching without it! Other instructional technology Projector and Screen Document Camera Video & DVD system HP 1055CM Plotter HP 4600 Color Laser Printer Hour 1 Collaborative education and class goals are defined and explained. Professional education for career advancement is explained. Behavioral requirements of student to student interaction are defined and explained. Behavioral requirements between students and instructor are defined and explained. The CADD Lab as a long term job interview Documentation as a student s Portfolio Education or training must include structure that promotes the learning of how a CADD operator works with a purpose driven interaction between associates and superiors. Pedagogical vs. Andragogical (Children vs. Adults) Educational requirements and benefits of andragogical education are explained Greater degree and depth of learning Personal responsibility and self motivation Teaching is the best method to fully understand and retain information Hour 2 Demonstration of Revit showing the ease of use in creating architectural models and documentation using the Autodesk Revit Building 8 Getting Started tutorial. I would suggest that you print the tutorial as opposed to viewing the tutorial on screen. Great little tutorial that covers, though briefly, most aspects of Revit. Various students projects completed are shown with a peppering of You can do this. Hour 3 through Hour 12 The Revit Building Getting Started Tutorial I interrupt with brief demonstrations two to three times per hour for about a total of about 20 minutes per 2 hour block. Students that finish first then help slower students. I change the seating and who is helping who often. Nobody can proceed before all students finish tutorial. Students are assigned different seating every few classes. Students that have not progressed as far into the tutorial are flanked by students who are zipping through the tutorial. Asking other students for help and students assisting other students is actively encouraged. Assisting students are not allowed to manipulate either the mouse or keyboard of students being assisted unless directed by instructor through the Robotel system. 3
5 Instructor broadcasts brief [never more than 5 minutes] demonstrations of techniques used in Revit Building for approximately 15 minutes of each hour. They are generic but closely related to material covered in the Getting Started tutorial. Examples - Creating and editing Levels to wall properties manipulation. Determining status and problem solving techniques. Resources available online Hour 13 through Hour 17 Getting Started Tutorial Second Time! Same as before with all students completing tutorial before starting next assignment. Repetition to learn Feel and Flow of software and to gain familiarity and speed. Repetition to learn Feel and Flow of software and to gain familiarity and speed. Repetition to learn Feel and Flow of software and to gain familiarity and speed. Hour 18 through Hour 20 Getting Started Tutorial Third Time!!!! Timed!!!!!! When quickest students finished, they were assigned to read the tutorial to a student that had not finished the tutorial. Slowest time - 1 hour 42 minutes. Fasted time - 37 minutes. (Barrnet) [I think that about 6 students practiced at home but would not admit to that.] All students realize that I CAN DO THIS!! Total time so far - 20 hours. Hour 18 through Hour 20 Residential Design textbook tutorial - Students create a document set for a 2 story with basement residence with the following: All Floor Plans Wall section Ceiling plans Schedules for doors, windows Elevations 3 kitchen elevations Full sections Room finishes 3D sections Both exterior & Site plan Interior renderings Floor/wall callout Software Textbook Used Residential Design Using AutoDesk Revit Building 8, Daniel J. 9 Revit Tip and Tricks for Teaching 1. Teach Keyboard Shortcuts early and enforce their use. 2. 3D Section Views are wonderful for inspecting and for difficult to select items. 3. Section Views are great for inspecting and for using the keyboard arrow keys to move components. 4. Use a central library that every body uses and downloads to when getting components from the web. 5. Pin down two adjacent walls before beginning dimensions. Dimension and Pin. Dimension and Pin. 6. Use exterior face of core for all exterior wall measurements so that if you change from one type of exterior to another, like Clapboard Siding to Brick, then the dimensions do not change. 7. Don t teach or use rendering until as late as possible in course. 8. Check component s ability to allow material selection before placing component. 9. OH. YES! Make sure CHAIN is selected when drawing lines. (Should be the default in my opinon, but isn t.) 10. If it s Blue, then click on it and see how it can be edited. 11. Export.jpg images of any desired shaded view. 12. Duplicate Duplicate Walls, anything you want to edit and name something that makes sense. 13. Duplicate Duplicate Views Example 1st Floor Furniture and 1st Floor Dimensioned. 14. Draw walls in a Clock-Wise direction to have exterior of walls on outside. 15. Use trim to close in shapes when in drawing mode. 16. Move all things with Keyboard Arrow-Keys. The more you Zoom-In, the smaller the increment of movement. 17. Make students finish dimensioning and all elevations, sections, and callouts before allowing any furniture or site components insertion. 18. Use a Crossing Window to select things like the floor or ceiling in the plan view and then filtering out everything else. 19. Align and lock, Align and Lock. Repeat! 20. Set the scale of a view to 6 =1 to create and manipulate and edit components on small increments, then set the scale to the desired print scale. 21. Set renderings to a DPI high enough to result in at least 3000 pixels horizontally. 22. Gypsum board ceilings are not seen due to the fact that they do not have a surface pattern. 23. Draw line or whatever is necessary to align, mirror or measure anything
