1 State Welding Fabrication ompetitors: New Mexico Welding Fabrication 09 We are excited and proud to have each and every one of you participate in the SkillsUS State ompetition. Thank-you for showcasing your skills and supporting the welding trade. Purpose: The purpose of the Welding Fabrication contest is to evaluate each contestant s preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding contestants for excellence and professionalism in the field of welding fabrication. Scope: The scope of this contest is defined by industry standards. ll blueprints, welding symbols, and welding terms must conform to the latest edition of the merican Welding Society (WS) standards. This year we will be trying something new, following the National SkillsUS Welding Fabrication event from 0. There will be a standard project provided to all competitors. Information is provided in advance so your team can start to prepare. Your team will have hours to complete fabrication of the project. Your team & project will be judged throughout your hours. The project your team will build will be donated to a local non-profit. Welding Fabrication has chosen to support a few New Mexico omestic Violence Shelters by providing outside seating. This seating will allow for the families and individuals to have a place outside where they can eat and sit during their stay at the shelter. In addition, teams will still be required to brainstorm and design a project. project theme will be provided with guidelines. Prints for this project theme will be required and graded as they have been in the past as part of your overall grade. The project your team will design is a coin bank. The coin bank will NOT be fabricated during the contest. Knowledge Performance: The contest will include a written knowledge exam that assess the practical knowledge of welding, safety, measurement and blueprint reading. Other common fabrication operations may also be assessed such as fit-up, OF, grinding, and material handling. The team s interview will be conducted before the fabrication time. Please see schedule for specific time. Page of 9

2 Eligibility: Open to active SkillsUS members enrolled in programs with welding as the occupational objective. This is a team event and each team will be comprised of three people. They must be student members from the same school and training program and one alternate must be selected for each team. General Rules: ll welds and OF cuts shall be left in the as welded or as-cut condition. This means no grinding of welds or OF cuts. grinder/wire wheel may be used to prep the project for welding. Weldments are to include the following three processes: SMW, GMW (short circuit), and GTW. Each team must show one vertical up weld for each of the three welding processes. In-process inspection during fabrication will be performed by the ertified Welding Inspector (WI) team appointed by the SkillsUS welding fabrication chairperson. Safety and lothing Requirements: Each contestant must wear the following items during the entirety of the competition: coveralls or work shirt and pants, leather work boots, and NSI Z approved safety glasses with side shields. Prescription glasses with side shields may be used only if they are NSI Z approved and marked.
