New and higher skills may be new to the novice and are the focus for learning in this presentation Once you have opened SketchUp, go to Window and select Preferences. 2. Select Template and choose Architectural Design Millimeters. You are using this template because you are doing an architectural project. Click on OK. Note: It is often necessary to start a new file to use the new template. Go to File then New. 4 ZigZag Education,

3 The screen should now look like this. As you can see, at the top is a menu bar which has drop-down menus. Immediately below that is the Getting Started toolbar. The architectural template includes a person-sized component. I call them Gelfs. These can help to give you a sense of scale on a project. You can add this useful toolbar for quickly changing the viewing angle. On the menu bar, go to View, then Toolbars and then select Views Now, to start drawing the building select the Rectangle tool from the toolbar. 4. Clicking on position 1, keep the left mouse button pressed down and draw a rectangle by letting go when you get to position 2. The rectangle will become dark grey ZigZag Education,

4 5. Now type in 9500,4500 and press the Enter (or return) key. This will give you the rectangle to the correct scale. Note: The computer thinks it is working at full size. If the rectangle is now going off the screen (as above) then simply select the Pan tool and drag it back into view. 7 Some useful tips Note: If you make a mistake at any time during this tutorial you can just go to Edit and choose Undo from the drop-down menu, or press the Alt and Backspace keys. You can use the Orbit tool to change the angle that you are viewing your design from. You can do the same by pressing the middle wheel of your mouse. You can also use the Pan tool to grab and move your object around the screen. Alternatively, you can pan by pressing the Shift key and holding down the mouse's middle wheel. 8 ZigZag Education,

5 6. Now select the Push/Pull tool from the toolbar. 7. As you hover the cursor over the rectangle, it will be highlighted a bluish colour. Click on the rectangle to select it and using the mouse drag it upwards. Type 2500 to give the block its height. Making things 3D in this way is called extruding To hollow out the block to create walls, select the Offset tool. Again, as you hover the cursor above the top of the block it will be highlighted blue and a small red dot will appear at the edge. 9. You should also see the outline of another rectangle appear inside the first. This is the Offset. Type 300 and press Enter to give an equal wall thickness of 300 mm all around the building. 10 ZigZag Education,

6 10. Now select the Push/Pull tool. 11. Having first orientated (revolved with the mouse s middle button pressed) the block, you can see the block being removed as you push the inner rectangle downwards. When the On Face blue dot appears, you have reached the bottom of the object and you should click to set it. An alternative is to just type 2500 and press Enter Now you are going to put the foundations on the building below ground level. Firstly, orientate the block so that you can see the underside. Select the Rectangle tool and click on one corner of the inner rectangle on the bottom (see 1). Look for the green dot that tells you it is an Endpoint Create the rectangle by dragging to the diagonally opposite corner of the same rectangle (green dot again for Endpoint) and click. The bottom of the box will seal but it has no thickness at the moment. 14. Using the Push/Pull tool, extrude the new inner rectangle by pulling down and typing 100, and then press Enter. 12 ZigZag Education,

7 15. To bring the outside rectangle level with the inside one, select the Push/Pull tool once again. 16. Click on the outer rectangle and start to pull it downwards. 17. With the outer ring highlighted, hover the cursor over the inner rectangle. A dark blue dot will show with the words On Face. Click and the two surfaces will now be level. Tip: This is a good way to get several objects to be at the same level, e.g. chair legs, chimneypots, etc You are now going to put a pitched roof on your building. First, you will need to orientate it so that you can work on the top of one end. 19. Next, you are going to set the height of the roof by using a construction line (or guideline). Select the Tape Measure tool Click on one end of the top edge (see 1). Look for the green dot that shows you that it is an Endpoint. 21. Then hover the cursor along the line until it reveals a 1 bright blue dot that shows you the Midpoint (see 2). Do not click here, but start to move the cursor upwards and type 2000 and then press Enter. A dotted construction line will appear. 22. Now select the Line tool 14 ZigZag Education,

8 2 23. With the Line tool, click once again on the top end of the short wall (see 1). Look for the green dot. Then hover the cursor over the midpoint again. Look for the bright blue dot Gently pull the cursor up towards the construction line. You should see a dotted blue line appear that will guide you along the centre line. When these two lines meet, a red dot will appear along with the message On Line. Click to set this point (see 2). 25. With the Line tool still selected, draw in the other line to meet the other corner, making a triangle. Again, look for the endpoint shown as a green dot. The triangle will automatically be filled in with a grey colour Orientate the building so that you can see the back of the new triangle. 27. Use the Push/Pull tool to select and extrude the triangle, making it level with the inner wall. Reminder: Make it level by putting the cursor over the inside wall to match it. Look for the blue dot and the On Face prompt. Tip: The Move tool also doubles as a Copy tool. You are going to copy the solid triangle and place a copy at the other end of the building. 16 ZigZag Education,

9 28. If the solid triangle is not already highlighted then just put a box around it using the Select tool. The triangle will be blue, like this. 29. Now select the Move tool from the toolbar. Press and release the Ctrl key on your keyboard. This toggles the Move tool to a Copy tool. 30. With the cursor, find the midpoint at the bottom of the triangle. Look for the blue dot and Midpoint prompt. Click here and a copy will appear. 31. With the correct orientation, you can now drag the copy to the other end of the image. Look for the midpoint on the top of the other wall to match it up. A useful red centre line also appears. Click to set it Orientate your building so that you can view the other end again. 33. With the Offset tool, highlight the triangle again. 34. Start to pull out another triangle OUTSIDE of the solid one. Type 100 and press Enter. The triangle will go white. 35. Use the Line tool to draw in a line to join the corner of the inner triangle with the outside one, as shown. Try to make it look like you have extended the sloping line. 36. Now use the Erase tool to remove any unwanted lines. These include this bottom line and the dotted construction line you made earlier. You should also remove the two small lines from each side of the triangle to leave you with a roof outline like this. 18 ZigZag Education,

10 37. Orientate your building again so that you can see the other end of the building as well. 38. With the Push/Pull tool, select the outline of the roof that you have just drawn. 39. Extrude the roof profile along the length of the building. Make it level with the end of the building. You will extend it further later Orientate to the other end of the building again. You are now going to start to put in some details for doors and windows. Firstly, you are going to create some construction lines (guidelines) so that everything will line up. 41. With the Tape Measure tool, click on the bottom corner of the building (see 1) then move the cursor up the edge and type 1000 then press Enter. A black construction point will appear on the edge near With the Tape Measure tool still selected, click on the black construction point and stretch a line to the other end of the building. It will initially appear red if it is parallel to the base, as it should be. A dotted line will appear when you click on the far end of the building. 20 ZigZag Education,

11 1, In a similar way, you should now produce two more horizontal construction lines. One is 100 mm from the bottom of the building (the base thickness) The other is 1,200 mm above the other construction line , , , In a similar way, put in the vertical construction lines using the dimensions shown Using the construction lines to guide you, draw in the windows using the Rectangle tool. 46. Use the Push/Pull tool to remove the rectangular part of the wall, leaving a window hole. I found it best to push in slightly, and then type 300 and press Enter. 47. Do the same for the other windows. Note: When you make the door hole, remember to start it above the 100 mm line so that you do not cut into the base slab. 22 ZigZag Education,

12 With your drawing looking like this, you are now going to put in some window frames and a door. This could obviously be very difficult to create so you are going to use components that someone else has already made. 48. On the menu bar, click File then from the drop-down menu go to 3D Warehouse and select Get Models When this window pops up type windows into the space and click Search. 50. When the window changes to this one, click on the one marked Window by Acorn to select it. 51. Click Download Model and select Yes when asked if you want it to load directly into your SketchUp model. 24 ZigZag Education,

13 52. For now, place the imported window component in front of your building. To prevent having to import another window, you could copy this one two more times using the Move/Copy tool (remember to toggle to copy). 53. Select the Move tool and click on the front corner of the window so you can pick it up. Look for the purple dot and a prompt saying Endpoint in Component. 54. Place it within the window cavity in the wall by locating the corresponding corner point, which will show as a green dot with the prompt Endpoint. Press Esc to let go of the component. 25 When fitting the window frame into the wall cavity, it seems I was lucky that it fitted snugly. If the imported components do not fit then you will need to SCALE them. The following instructions show how to fit and scale the door. The same principles apply to all components. 55. From the 3D Warehouse, I selected this front door. I placed the Endpoint in the corner to set it but saw that it was too big for the door hole. 56. With the door still selected, go to the toolbar and on the Tools drop-down menu select Scale. A yellow frame and green nodes will appear around the component. 26 ZigZag Education,

14 57. As the component is already anchored in the correct place on its left-hand side, grab one of the green nodes on its right-hand side. It will turn red. 58. Firstly, resize the door by pulling it into about the middle of the door hole and let it go. 59. Then, grabbing the same node again, stretch it across until it fits the width of the door hole. In my example, I use the Midpoints to marry it up. 60. The door is still too high, so do something similar to make it fit vertically With the front doors and windows fitted, make similar construction lines, etc. to set out the rear of the building before removing material with the Push/Pull function. I ve made a few changes so I can put in some French windows. 28 ZigZag Education,

15 When you import a window on this side of the building, you may notice that the window sill is on the wrong side. To resolve this, the quickest thing to do is to flip it. 62. With the component highlighted, right-click on it with your mouse. 63. From the pop-up, select Flip Along and then Components Green (in this case). This refers to the axis along which to flip it. 64. Then its just a matter of moving and scaling the component as before If you decide to fit a window in the end wall, as I have, then the imported component will need to be revolved by 90 degrees. To do this, select the Revolve tool from the toolbar. 66. The cursor will have turned into a protractor. Make sure that this is blue so that you revolve along the correct axis. 67. Click on one end of the window frame, making sure that the endpoint is showing as a purple dot (1) Move the cursor to the other end of the frame (2)and click. This will enable you to freely rotate the window frame about a point. 69. Turn the window slightly and then type 90 and enter. This will turn the frame 90 degrees. 70. Move and scale the window frame to fit. 30 ZigZag Education,

16 71. With the window and door details done, use the Eraser tool to remove the construction lines. This will make the drawing clearer. It may be that at one end of the building the roof has gone a bit funny (showing its insides), like this. 72. To resolve this, select the Line tool and just draw over one of the long outside lines of the roof (e.g. 1) 1 At this point, you will have a good functional drawing onto which you could choose to put details. 31 One detail that you could add is a chimney. To do this, follow these instructions. 73. Use the Tape Measure to create a centre line down from the roof apex. 74. A small distance to the right of the centre line create a rectangle sized 800, Extrude this by 4,800 to form the chimney. 76. On the top of the chimney, draw three circles of radius 90 mm in a line. Extrude them all by 200 mm. 77. Use the Offset tool to hollow them out by 25 mm. 32 ZigZag Education,

17 78. Now use the Push/Pull tool to pull out the roof from the main building by 300 mm. You will need to do the chimney end in two parts Now extend the other end of the roof by 300 mm Use your judgement to create a rectangular doorstep that is 100 mm high 81. You could also add a 100 mm high patio to go with the French windows. TIP: Those of you who are not very good at hand-sketching will find the next topic of great value. Think about how you could use it in your coursework! 82. From the tool bar select Window and then Styles. 83. In the pop-up window, select Sketchy Edges from this drop-down menu. 84. From the next menu select Pen Black. 34 ZigZag Education,

18 You should have an instant handsketched idea. Now, wouldn t that be great for the presentation of design ideas? It is worth experimenting with some of the other effects before returning to the standard default settings. Note: Default settings are In Model then Architectural Design Style. 35 Having returned to the standard architectural view, you are going to colour and render your building. 85. Firstly, select the Paint Bucket tool from the tool bar. 86. This pop-up window will appear. In the drop-down menu select Materials and then Brick and Cladding. 87. From the next window, simply select the kind of finish you would like for your building. 36 ZigZag Education,

19 88. With the material chosen the cursor will have changed into a paint bucket. Use this to click on the surfaces you wish to colour/render. Don t forget to do the details too, such as the window reveals. At this point, you may consider the model to be finished. However, it could be made to look more realistic with some shadows. 89. To add shadows click on View on the tool bar. Then select Shadows. This will give you a standard shadow It is possible to customise the shadow to your own preferences. Select Window from the menu bar and then click on Shadows. 91. The resulting pop-up window allows you to choose from the different factors that change the shadow from the sun, i.e.: The time of day The month The strength of the sun You will need to experiment to find your own preferences. 38 ZigZag Education,

20 Extensions: Experiment with different colours and finishes for your bungalow. Try constructing a two-storey building, or one with wings or extensions. Give your bungalow a garden or some landscaping. Use Materials and the 3D Warehouse for trees, sheds, fences and other components. Design an interior for your bungalow. It is best to do this before you put the roof on. Design your dream house. Look at other designers buildings in the 3D Warehouse. 39 Here are a few views of a design that I have added more materials and components to. I took out the shadows because they slowed my laptop down too much. 40 ZigZag Education,
