3 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Safety Safety equipment must be worn at all times in the competition area Hard hat and steel toed footwear are mandatory at all times Safety glasses are to be worn at all times. Hearing protection are to be worn depending on the task Maintain a clean work area, brooms and dustpans are available All garbage and extra material is to remain in the work area DO NOT energize stations without judge present and safety glasses There is only one cord for testing so it will be shared All judges will monitor the competitors to see that proper safety practices are followed. Work safely at all times Material Each station area contains the material for the entire competition Please check the material with the packing slip to ensure that it is all there Extra material needed later will result in marks lost Some of the material is used, this can be replaced later if found to be defective or damage No marks will be lost for replacing damaged components Miscellaneous wire and materials are located in central areas This is to be shared by all competitors Please take only the amount of material that you need, and keep it in your area Excessive wire and material use will be marked Straps, supports, staples are marked based on minimum code requirements and enough to look good. Use just enough without being excessive. Dimensions All dimensions are from the floor or plywood edge Even if not level please go off the floor to the indicated side on the diagram. All dimensions are given in millimetres The print indicates the side of box being measured and location (top/bottom/center) Discussion During the contest direct all questions to the judges only All competitors will receive the same answer to questions If necessary a written answer will be passed out. Please no talking to people outside the contest area. We encourage fair competition and want you to interact with the other competitors Please refrain from discussing the competition You may leave the competition area to use the washroom but please let the judges know and no talking to anyone about the competition Stud Wall Wiring This will evaluate your ability to install common residential circuits and devices. The wiring will use NMD cable fed from the panelboard. You will be evaluated on accuracy of measurements, circuit operation, cable installation & termination. All installation will be done safely to code. Surface Wall Wiring This will evaluate your ability to install motor control and common commercial circuits & devices. The wiring will use BX cable and conduit fed from a panel. You will be evaluated on accuracy of measurements, circuit operation, cable installation & termination, conduit bending & installation. 4 Schedule The contest is 6 hours in length. Lunch is 30 minutes (time to be determined) All competitors must stop working The competition will have 3 components, Stud Wiring & Surface Wiring, and troubleshooting. Competitors may move to surface wiring once they have finished the stud wiring Stud wiring will be judged after 4 hours of competition time All competitors must move to Surface wiring after 4 hours Once started on surface wiring you may not return to stud wiring When called upon by the judges, you must immediately stop work and proceed with the judges to the troubleshooting area. You will have 20 minutes to complete the troubleshooting competition. Registration & Set-up Orientation, contest outline Contest Start Lunch Stud Wiring Finished Competition Finished Clean-up 7:30-7:45 AM 7:45-8:00 AM 8:00 AM 12:30 PM 2:30 PM 2:30-2:45 PM (pack up tools and tidy work area) These are estimated times and may be adjusted to account for any delays. Testing & Completion You may test your circuitry if time allows Before testing you must notify the judge and have proper PPE When you finish one contest area unplug the power cord, turn all breakers off and make area safe. Notify the judge before leaving the stud wiring and starting the surface wiring Notify the judge once the competition if finished Rev.1 Page 4 15 Apr, 2015

5 Stud Wall Wiring Drawings There is 1 drawing for the stud wall at the back of this package which shows both the box details and elevations. Boxes All of the boxes are to be mounted on the side of the stud indicated on the drawing allowing for ½ drywall. The dimensions are given; the drawing is not to scale. Boxes that are aligned on the drawing are at the same elevation, even if dimensions are not indicated. There are two plastic octagon boxes for the keyless lampholders; two1 gang device boxes for 3 way switches, two 1 gang boxes for 20 amp T slot GFCI receptacles, and two 1 gang boxes for 15 amp AFCI protected receptacles. Box Type Drawing Label Devices Plastic Octagon L Keyless lampholder 1 gang device box B 3 way Switch 1 gang device box C Recept. GFCI protected, 20A T slot 1 gang device box F AFCI protected 15 amp receptacle Home runs The 3-phase cord end will be used but only line 1, line 2 and the neutral will be connected to the single phase panelboard. The cord has been wired already but not tested. Please be sure to check the cord end connections. Please use all 6 circuits with home runs as shown, and label the panel schedule as follows; circuits #1 750 watt baseboard heater circuit # 2- w/p GFCI receptacle, circuit #3- AFCI protected receptacles, circuit # 4- GFCI receptacles, circuit # 5 stud wall lighting, circuit # 6 surface wall fan and light. Circuitry Finishing The stud wall will use NMD wire only. Installation and circuits should meet CEC and the minimum material to wire the job neatly. Circuit and device groupings for circuits are indicated on the drawings. The devices should operate for the following conditions The two T slot receptacles are fed from a 2 wire 20 amp circuit (cct 4),GFCI protected. The two lamps (L) are controlled from two locations by the switches labelled S3, and are on their own circuit (cct. 5). The two AFCI receptacles are to be fed with 14/2 NMD7 loomex with a blue outer jacket to identify it from other circuits. An AFCI circuit breaker is to be installed in the panel on circuit 3. Covers are not required to be installed on any of the boxes. However devices should be mounted ready for covers. There are covers that can be used to guide device installations. When you are finished at this area please clean up, make all connections safe, and notify judges before moving on.nk. Rev.1 Page 5 15 Apr, 2015

6 Surface Wall Wiring Drawings There is 1 drawing for the surface wall at the back of this package showing the boxes and elevations.. Boxes All of the boxes are to be mounted securely on the surface of the wall. The measurements will be taken from the point indicated on the drawing. The dimensions are given; the drawing is not to scale. Boxes that are aligned on the drawing are at the same elevation, even if dimensions are not indicated. The panel is to be used for all devices on this wall. It is aligned with the edge of the wall. One surface box and taylor plate houses a mechanical time switch. The other houses a single pole switch with pilot light which should illuminate when the switch is in the on position. The weatherproof receptacle box houses a GFCI receptacle with an enclosed type weatherproof cover. Panel The panel is a single phase that will be wired as a sub panel fed with the 3-phase cord end. The cord has been wired already but not tested. Please be sure to check the cord end connections. Use 2 of the 3 power wires to connect the panel; cap the unused wire. Be sure to label all circuits on the panel directory (if necessary ask for labels to use) Home Runs The home runs for the wiring on this wall are not indicated on the drawing but are explained below. It shall be fed with #14 solid cu conductors in ½ emt, and GFCI protected. The fan and the heater will be fed using armoured cable (BX). The fan and light L1 shall both be fed from circuit 6with #14 cu conductors in ½ emt. The heater shall be fed from circuit 1. The mechanical time switch shall control the fan only. The pilot light switch controls the light L1 only, and the pilot light should be illuminated when L1 light is on. Rev.1 Page 6 15 Apr, 2015

7 Finishing Please install the covers on all boxes on the surface wall. When you are finished at this area please clean up, make all connections safe, put all breakers in the off position and notify the judges before leaving the area. Rev.1 Page 7 15 Apr, 2015

8 General Marking & Evaluation These are some guidelines to follow: Operation (250) Ensure that all circuitry works safely and properly. Check the panel wiring. Equipment (100) Check that all devices are installed properly. Use of supplies (50) No unnecessary material is used. No KO fillers.( others than those already installed in used equipment) Measurement (100) Measure to within 3mm. Accuracy is important, within small tolerances. Cable Installation (100) Tubing & Conduit (100) No kinking of EMT Offsets as required Connections and Terminations (100) Health & Safety (100) Maintain a clean work area & use safety equipment. There will be three checks at different time throughout the day. Troubleshooting (100) Tie Break The first tie break is the higher operation score The second tiebreaker is the higher safety score The third tiebreaker is the higher troubleshooting score The fourth tiebreaker is the time of completion when judge is notified.
