BROAD ST., COLUMBUS, OHIO July 20, 2012 To: Users of the Standard Bridge Drawings From: Tim Keller, Administrator, Office of Structural Engineering By: Sean Meddles, Assistant Administrator, Office of Structural Engineering Re: Standard Bridge Drawings The following revised Standard Bridge Drawings are now available: Bridge Sidewalk Railing with Concrete Parapets (BR-2-98) Noise Barrier Specifications for Ground Mounted Applications (NBS-1-09) A brief summary of the changes to each drawing follows: BR-2-98: This revision to BR-2-98 shall be referenced on all projects specifying the Sidewalk Bridge Railing with Concrete Parapets with Stage 2 design submissions after July 20, Elevation Sheet 1 of 3: The spacing of the vertical reinforcement in the 2-ft tall portion of the wall was adjusted to coincide with each railing post and anchorage. This should provide consistent reinforcement at each post to help prevent cracking at each post location. Section A-A Sheet 1 of 3: The callouts for the structural tubing were updated to HSS in lieu of the TS references from previous editions of the drawing. The 7/8 diameter anchor bolt material specification was revised from ASTM A325 to ASTM A449. ASTM A325 bolts are not appropriate for this application because the thread length requirements for A325 are not applicable. A reference to bolt details for the 5/8 diameter rail-to-post connection has been added. Base Plate Detail Sheet 1 of 3: The weld symbol for the post-to-base plate connection has been added. This ¼-inch allaround fillet weld symbol was inadvertently omitted on the previous versions of the drawing.

2 Standard Bridge Drawings July 20, 2012 Detail B Sheet 2 of 3: The slotted holes in the horizontal railing elements that provide the connection between the railing and post were enlarged to accommodate the thermal expansion/contraction of each rail element. Fasteners Sheet 3 of 3: The anchor bolt material specification was revised from ASTM A325 to ASTM A449. The reference to the AATHO M180 specification for the rail-to-post connecting hardware was eliminated and the details were added to the drawing. Rail-to-Post Bolts Sheet 3 of 3: This information was previously only available by reference to AASHTO M180 and has been added to the drawing for convenience. Guidance for bolt tightening of these fasteners has also been included. NBS-1-09: This revision to NBS-1-09 shall be referenced on all projects specifying precast concrete noise walls with Stage 3 design submissions after July 20, Sheet 1 of 13, Note 6 Reinforcing Steel: Reference to a specification for galvanized welded wire fabric, ASTM A 1060, has been added. Sheet 1 of 13, Note 6 Fasteners: The specification for the threaded rods has been changed from ASTM A449 to Deformed, one-end threaded, ASTM A615, Grade 60. Sheet 1 of 13, Note 6 Foam Backer Rod: Backer rod is no longer listed on the Department s Qualified Products List (QPL). Reference to a specification for backer rod, ASTM D7174, has been added. Sheet 1 of 13, Note 11 Shop Drawings: A process has been added to address fabricator modifications to the structural design of posts, panels, base plates and anchorages. Design changes shall clearly be noted on the shop drawings, and supporting double P.E. stamped calculations shall accompany the shop drawing submittal. The shop drawing submittal has been changed to require delivery of electronic files in pdf format directly to the Engineer. Sheet 2 of 13, Tolerances: The panel tolerances for horizontal and vertical sweep have been revised. Sheet 2 of 13, Acceptance Requirements: The Department will now require the fabrication and installation of a full wall bay from postto-post along with one additional post and panel for acceptance. The additional post and panel shall be returned to the fabricator upon the Engineer s acceptance for the QC 2

3 Standard Bridge Drawings July 20, 2012 inspector s use in determining acceptance for shipment to the project. The acceptance posts and panels may be incorporated into the project. Sheet 3 of 13, Surface Preparation: The surface preparation for non-absorptive surfaces now includes a surface profile comparable to 100 grit sandpaper. Acceptable profiling methods are 7000 psi water blast or abrasive blasting. Sheet 8 of 13, 16 Precast Concrete Post Data: The diameter of the B Threaded Rods has been replaced with the rebar size for the deformed, one-end threaded, ASTM A615, Grade 60 material. Sheet 9 of 13, 20 Precast Concrete Post Data: The diameter of the B Threaded Rods has been replaced with the rebar size for the deformed, one-end threaded, ASTM A615, Grade 60 material. 3
