1 TEACHERS GUIDE Written by Frédéric Brrémaud and Illustrated by ABOUT THE BOOK A day in the life of the king of the jungle, this lavishly illustrated story follows a single majestic tiger through a wordless adventure of survival as it hunts prey and defends itself from other would-be killers defending their territory. This exciting tale is told without narration or dialogue, conveyed entirely through the beautiful illustrations of Federico Bertolucci. A beautiful, all-ages title that explores genuine natural behavior through the dramatic lens of Disney-esque storytelling. Like a nature documentary in illustration $17.99US/$23.99CAN WHY WORDLESS BOOKS Looking for an engaging way to spark creativity in your classroom? Wordless picture books provide numerous activities for use for any grade level to teach story elements, critical thinking, reading comprehension, and writing. Students of all ages benefit from wordless picture books in the classroom. When incorporating these books into your classroom, be sure to do a story walk with your students first. Look at the images, paying attention to what draws your eye and what you notice first. Then, reread the story. Depending on the age of your students, you may need to model storytelling before they try it. LOVE: THE TIGER TEACHERS GUIDE lionforge.com/educator 1

2 CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES SEQUENCING ACTIVITY Sequencing (beginning, middle, end) is an important reading comprehension skill and great narrative writing tool. For this activity, cut out the individual panels in Figure One. Have students order the panels to convey a story. Once students have decided on a sequence, choose one of the following activities depending on their grade level. ELA, ESL, and students studying a foreign language can all benefit from these story sequencing activities because of the wordless panels. CREATIVE WRITING: SETTING ACTIVITY Project or provide a printed copy of Figure Two. Brainstorm the who, what, when, and where based on the image. Then have students generate a list of sensory words (see, hear, smell, feel, taste) that describe the place illustrated in Figure Two. A whole class may generate this list together, or students can generate their ideas individually. Following these brainstorming activities, students will write a paragraph describing the scene. Activity One: Have students orally tell the story. Be sure to note the use of sequencing words (first, then, after, before, last, etc.). You may want to print out individual sequencing words to aid the student. Activity Two: Have students write a sentence per panel to narrate the story depicted in the panels. Activity Three: have students write the story, including what happened before and what happened after the sequence of panels. Editing Activity: Once students have completed their written setting paragraph, pair each with a partner and a copy of the image. Have one student close their eyes while their partner reads the paragraph aloud. Once finished, have students look at the image and discuss whether or not the imaged created in their minds during the reading matches the images. What did the writer convey well? What is missing? Then based on feedback, students rewrite their setting piece. LOVE: THE TIGER TEACHERS GUIDE lionforge.com/educator 2

6 ABOUT THE AUTHOR Frédéric Brrémaud grew up on a farm in the west of France, which instilled him with a love for nature and an immediate appreciation for life and death. His interest in storytelling was let loose at the Center Nationale de Bande Desinnee in Angouleme, leading to a career writing and creating numerous series, spanning many genres, from historical adventures to classical novel adaptations to westerns to vampires stories, all published with numerous artists and publishers. As much as he likes to play in different genres, however, he will always return to tell more animal stories. ABOUT THE ARTIST Federico Bertolucci began illustrating at the College of Arts in Lucca, Italy, then the Accademia della bella Arti in Carrara, before being accepted into the Disney Studio in Milan in Having illustrated several comics based on popular animated characters, including The Flintstones and Lilo & Stitch, he codeveloped Richard Coeur de Lion (Richard Lionheart) with Brremaud, which led to continued collaboration together, next on Racambole, then the LOVE series. He too will always return to tell more animal stories. Federico recently received a 2016 Eisner Award nomination for his work on the LOVE series in the category Best Painter/Multimedia Artist.
