Calico Bush Novel by Rachel Fields Unit Study by Karen K. Newell Calico Bush is the story of Marguerite, a girl who lived in Maine in This book is classified as historical fiction. Marguerite and the other people living in the story are fictitious, meaning the author made them up. But the setting and the environment they lived in were intentionally written as they may have occurred in history. Unlike other unit studies where you read the unit study notes after reading a chapter, we encourage you to read the UNIT STUDY QUESTIONS FIRST. It will help you answer the questions. But before we start, here is a time line that places this story in its historical setting. Mark these events on the timeline: Pilgrims landed at Plymouth This story French and Indian War American Revolution Keeping this timeline in mind may help you understand parts of the story. 1
SUMMER This is the longest chapter. You might want to take two or three sittings to complete it. Remember to complete the questions as you read. Suggested readings of the first chapter: (Page 1 23) ( Pages 24-46) ( Pages 47-61) Character List: You will meet a number of characters in this chapter. Jot a quick note about them to help you keep them all straight. Marguerite Joel Sargent Dolly Sargent Ira Sargent Caleb Sargent Becky and Susan Patty Jacob Debby Captain Hunt Grand mere Oncle Pierre Seth Jordan Ethan Jordan Hepsa Jordan 2
Round Character Many stories have characters that are either all good or all bad. These are called flat characters. A round character is more interesting. This is a person who has good and bad qualities. (Doesn t everyone?) In this story, Dolly is a round character. There are things you may like or dislike about her. Make some notes about your impression of her below. You will add to this list as you read later chapters. What is Marguerite Missing? Marguerite is the main character. She has gone through some hard times and has lost things that are important to her. Throughout the story she experiences losses. Make a list. Remember, some losses may be more abstract than people or things. You will add to this list as you read later chapters. 3
What does it mean to be a Bound Out Girl? A. A servant for a specific number of years B. A slave for life C. The boss D. A traveler bound for a far away destination The Journey It is about 200 miles from Marblehead, Massachusetts to Mount Desert Island, Maine The coast of Maine is dotted with islands. Extra: Do an internet search or look at a map to see all the islands. See if you can find Mount Desert Island, or Isledes Montes Deserts in French. 4
Massachusetts or Maine? Joel Sargent wanted to move to Maine. His wife wanted to stay in Marblehead, Massachusetts. What are the advantages of either at that time? Check the timeline on the first page of this study guide. Remember, Massachusetts was first settled in 1620 so was more populated by this time, and Maine was still a wild frontier. Which would you want to do? Stay in Massachusetts Move to Maine Island or Coast Look at a map of Maine and all the islands dotted along the coast. Would you like to live on an island as the Hepsa Jordan did? Or would you rather live on the coast like the Sargents? Vocabulary She s got grit. They say that about Marguerite. That means she has courage or a lot of spunk. Marguerite s Grit What did Marguerite do that took grit? You may add to this list in subsequent chapters. 5
Problems, Problems, and More Problems Put an X by the statements that tell the problems the Sargent s face in this chapter. Lost most of their possessions at sea Wind blew them off the course into an unknown location Danger from natives Snakes and wild animals Lose their house Attacked by wolves Mountain Laurel Calico Bush is another name for the Mountain Laurel bush. It is also call Sheep Laurel. It is a low bush with colored flowers, often pink. Below are diagrams of the flower. Do an internet search for the different colors of the calico flower. Color the flowers with some of the different colors you find. Sprigged Calico Dresses were often made of cotton. Sprigged calico was a floral design on cotton. Extra: Do an internet search for sprigged calico designs. 6
FALL Seasons Why does the author use the seasons for chapter names? The Lists Why does Marguerite do in this chapter this is heroic? What losses do you learn about? Add to your lists on page 3 and 11 of this study guide. Meet the Neighbors Morses - Hiriam and Mary Jane Reuben and Baby Stanley - Eliza and Sam Andrew, William, Kate Welleses Nathan and Hannah Timothy, Abigail 7
The Log Cabin Draw a diagram of their cabin. Write a description below. French and British Notice the time line on the first page of this unit study and the beginning of the French and Indian War. What do you see in this story that indicates tensions are increasing between the French and British? 8
Grafting Grafting is the process of attaching a small stem or branch from one plant onto the large, main branch of another. Often it is done with fruit trees. It allows the branch that is grafted onto the older plant to start producing fruit sooner. Here is a picture of a strong, mature tree. What kind of tree branch would you want to graft into it? Implied Meaning Sometimes an author implies what happens without telling you. Here s an example: Susan walked into the kitchen. Her favorite pie plate was broken on the floor, smashed into many pieces. The cherry pie that she had left to cool was smeared on the floor. She looked over at her German Shepherd, licking red off his fur. You didn t, she yelled. What is the implication of this passage? A. Someone stole her cherry pie. B. The dog ate the pie. C. She burnt the pie. Marguerite finds something in the woods that frightens her. What is the implication? 9
WINTER Reactions What were the different reactions to Marguerite s dance? How did that make her feel? How did the neighbors react to the Sargent s need? Refused to help Willing to help but somewhat resentful Eager to Help Pumpkin What is the implication about Pumpkin? What happened to him? What leads you to that conclusion? Christmas Describe Marguerite s Christmas. Why didn t Marguerite tell Dolly and Joel what happened? Was she right not to tell them? 10
Debby What was Debby s first word? What was Marguerite s response to Debby? Add some of your thoughts from this chapter to these lists you started earlier: Marguerite s grit what did she do in this chapter that was heroic? Pg 11 of study guide Marguerite s losses What are some other things she misses? Pg 3 of study guide Dolly s character - What good and bad qualities do you see in her. Pg 3 of study guide New Frontier Does this story remind you of the first winter of the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620? Do you think the first settlers in all new lands had similar difficulties in their first winter? Think of some similarities and some differences. Four Seasons Artists sometimes do paintings of the four seasons. It could be of one plant or of an entire village. Find an example of this kind of art work. If you were an artist and were going to do a four season painting of the Sargent s farm, what would you include? Perhaps you would like to do a four seasons sketch of a calico bush or other plant. 11
SPRING Maple Sugar Spring is a time of new beginning and collecting maple syrup is often one of the first events of spring. The thaw in the weather lets the syrup start running in the trees. Why is everyone so excited and happy about the maple sugar? More Problems and Challenges What new problems surface in this chapter? (Think about supplies. Think about work needed to be done.) Maypole Watch two or three Maypole dances on YouTube. Which do you like best? Which can you imagine Marguerite doing? Do you think the neighbors might understand from the Maypole that there may be value in keeping some of the traditions of the Old World? 12
Indian Culture Throughout this book we have considered how Marguerite felt when her language and culture were rejected. Was the settler s rejection of the French culture similar to their rejection of the Indian culture? Compare the hostilities with these Indians to the friendship between the Pilgrims and Indians in Plymouth. What might have made it easier or harder for the settlers and Indians to get along? The Lists Remember to add Marguerite s losses, and heroic deeds to the lists on page 3 and 11. Also consider Dolly s character from her behavior and it to the lists. What has she gained? We have talked about Marguerite s losses through the book. She also found out she has gained some things. What are they? Marguerite s Decision Marguerite had to make a very important decision. What did she decide? Would you have decided the same as she did? 13
