1 Charley Skedaddle Performance Task

2 Task Card 1 After reading chapters 1-2, write the following questions and then answer using textual evidence. Place in the Charley folder when done. 1. In what city did Charley live? What part? 2. How did he spend his free time? 3. Who did he live with? How did they make their living? 4. What happened to Charley s older brother? 5. How did Charley get into the army? 6. Why did most of the union soldiers enlist? 7. How did the soldiers travel from New York? To what destination? 8. What would happen to soldiers who tried to leave?

3 Task Card 2 After reading chapters 1-4, get a sheet of white paper (ask your teacher for some) and complete the following activity: 1. Make this chart on your paper. List 1 List 2 List 3

4 Task Card 2, part 2 2. Under list 1, write down all your favorite possessions. 3. Now, imagine you have just joined the army, like Charley. The army provides you with food, clothing, shoes and a place to sleep. On list 2, write down the personal possessions you would like to take with you to the army. Remember, you will have to carry your things through battles and on long marches 4. On list 3, write down all the important things you carry in your heart and mind that no one else can see the personal qualities that get us through life. 5. Write 2 sentences on the back of you chart, making a conclusion about your lists. Place this chart inside the Charley Skedaddle folder on the back counter, when done.

6 Task Card 4 After reading chapters 5-6, write down these questions and answer them using textual evidence. Put them in the Charley folder when done. 1. Why are drummer boys important? 2. Describe one of the punishments for fighting? 3. Why was the wilderness so densely overgrown? 4. How was Con Sullivan punished? 5. What caused most of the Civil War casualties? 6. What were the soldiers supposed to do if they saw one of their comrades running from a battle?

7 Task Card 5 After reading chapters 7-8, write and answer the questions below. Put in the Charley folder when done. 1. What happened to Charley s regiment when it entered the wilderness? How did he solve the problem? 2. Why did the rebel troops run away from the first charge? 3. What happened to Charley s drum? 4. What happened to Charley after the battle ended? 5. What did he see? Hear? Smell? 6. What did Charley notice about the Confederate uniforms? 7. Why didn t Charley go to Andersonville Prison? 8. Why did he travel west?

9 Task Card 8 Write the following questions for chapters 11-12, and answer using textual evidence. Place in the Charley folder when done. 1. What dangers would Charley face in the hills if he ran from Jerusha? 2. Describe the differences between life in New York City and life at Jerusha s? 3. Why can Jerusha understand Charley? What made Charley miss his life in the Bowery? 4. Describe Charley s first meeting with Cois McRae. 5. How did Jerusha keep Charley from running away? 6. What jobs did Charley do for Jerusha? 7. What happened when Charley met Cois for the second time, (at church)? 8. How did the preacher stop the two boys?

10 Task Card 9 While running from The Battle of the Wilderness, Charley saw many dead animals and wounded soldiers. Below, is some information about 4 Civil War battles, during which there was extreme loss on both sides. Use the information in the chart to CREATE (level 4) a bar graph that compares Northern and Southern losses in these 4 battles (You will need to research to complete the chart). 11 Task Card 10 Runaway! Charley runs away from home in New York. Is this a good decision. If not, what would you suggest he do? Charley runs away from battle. Was this a good decision. If not, what would you suggest he do instead? Charley runs away from the Southern encampment towards the mountains. Is this a good decision? If not, what would you suggest he do? ***COMPOSE (Level 5) a short letter to Charley, addressing the issues above. Tell him how you think he should have handled the above events. Put this in the Charley folder when done.

12 Task Card 11 The BIG Cover-Up At some point in life, each of us may wish we were like someone else. Sometimes we even act like someone else to cover our fears or insecurities. Charley often wishes he was more like Johnny. When he tries to act like Johnny, he gets into trouble. You could say that Charley tries to cover himself with Johnny s mask. Sometimes, when we think we can t handle certain situations as ourselves, we might put on someone else s mask. Think of a time in your life when this might have happened. Why did you put on this mask? Did faking it as someone else work? Did that solve your problem? On notebook paper, write a brief EXPLANATION (level 6) of a time when you have put on a mask to get through a situation in life. Then, get a white paper plate and draw your new face. We will share those who wish to share.

14 Task Card 13 After reading chapters 13-17, write and answer the questions below, using textual evidence. 1. What is a painter? 2. What happened to the hens? 3. What news did Jake Hodder bring to Charley? 7. What did Charley confess to Jerusha? 8. How did Jerusha say that Charley came to live with her? 9. How was Charie s third meeting different from the first two? 10. Why did Charley leave Jerusha?

15 Task Card 14 Get with a partner, and discuss the meanings of the following examples of figurative language used in the book. Then, get one sheet of notebook paper, and you and your partner work together and LIST (Level 4) 4 more examples of figurative language in the book. Label each example. 1. 16 Task Card 15 Crystal Ball Pretend you have a crystal ball and can see into the future for Charley Quinn. Write a paragraph or two PROPOSING (level 5) what happens to Charley after the last page of the book. Share with a partner and see how similar your endings are to one another.
