1 The Case of the Missing Girl Story #1 Watson s barks could be heard by all the students in Mr. Larson s math class. Look! they cried. There s Sam Sherlock and Watson, his dog! they shouted, as they looked out of the big window facing the street. Welcome, Sam and Watson, said Mr. Larson as he opened the door. I certainly hope you can help us. As I told you when I called, one of our girls, Sue, did not come back from lunch, and we are very worried. I called you before I did anything else. Let s go look around the school, Sam said. Come on, Watson. Maybe you can help. Watson smelled the girl s sweater. Then he ran out and put his nose to the ground. He sniffed and sniffed. He ran this way and that. Suddenly, he put his nose in the air, sniffed once more, and ran to the equipment box on the field. Who do you suppose was sleeping in the box? Just then, a man with a bald head and big round glasses came from behind Shamu s tank. He carried a pail, and he looked around and around. Sam followed him because the man looked like he was up to something. The man walked to the parking lot and climbed into a truck. A big sign on the truck read: Do you know? Sam Sherlock and his niece, Wendy, were having a wonderful time looking at all the circus acts. Wendy liked the elephants best. Come on, said Sam to Wendy, let s go buy some cotton candy. Look at that beautiful, pink spun sugar. It really does look like cotton. I like it when it just melts in my mouth, said Wendy. Wendy was holding her cotton candy in one hand and holding onto Sam with the other. Suddenly, something or someone pushed against her, and her candy was taken right out of her hand. Uncle Sam, she cried, my cotton candy is gone! Sam looked around, and all he could see were dozens of clowns. The clowns all had green hair under their funny caps all but one, that is. As they passed a group of children, Sam overheard one of the girls say, My money is gone. I was counting out my Girl Scout cookie money. I left it on the picnic table in my yard, next to that stone wall. I left for a few minutes to answer the phone. When I got back, the money was gone. Sam and Watson stopped and introduced themselves.
