The American Weekly Mercury Sept. -12, 1734 Publick Notice is hereby oiven that there is now a POST OFFICE settled at Trenton, at the House of Joseph Read, Esq; his Son Andrew Read being appointed Post-Master, where all Persons may have their letters, if directed for that County; also where they may put in their Letters directed to any Parts, and due care will be taken to send them, the said Andrew Read having qualified himself for the said Office. -0- WEHAWKEN-WEEHAWKEN John L. Kay and Chester M. Smith, Jr., who collaborated on New Jersey Postal History, and other authors of postal history articles, warn that the study seems endless, Many of the older records were kept in manuscript and errors may occur. We still have'many years of making corrections ahead of us. In the Hudson County section of the Kay-Smith book, it is recorded that on February 2, 1861, New Durham became Wehawken. In the 'Name Changes' column of the April 1861 issue of the U.S. MAIL & POSTMASTER ASSISTANT, it is found that New Durham was changed to Weehawken. The Kay-Smith book records that, on October 20, 1867, Wehawken became Weehawken. The illustrated cover has no year date in the postmark but there is an enclosed letter and a printed notice, both dated 1864; the spelling is Weehawken. The letter is datelined "The Ridge", Oct. 2, 1864 and signed "A. H. Ryden, Weehawken P.O., N. J." Now we have something to look for. Was there ever a Wehawken post office or postmark? Or was it just a careless error in the records? The printed notice shows that although the post office name was changed, that of the hotel remained "New Durham". NJPH 33

We know that it can get cold at the Shore in September, but this BRRNEGAT CITY postmark is a stamp cutterls error. Wonder how long it was in use? /40 1% N. "I iynme Ok1301. Pr-med lc Germ..? /1 I., ".(, -/ -;,..- g t t...gr /-)"7 " The 1912 Cummins type Fa-131 for Forked River represents an earlier unlisted year date for this town, which apparetnly used this machine for many years, according to William Rapp's catalog of these markings in the Sep-Dec 1978 issue of POSTAL HISTORY U.S.A. -Theodore W. Bozarth- NJPH 34

Take your postmaster to lunch. AN INVITATION TO ALL POSTAL HISTORIANS Today, with the number of post offices steadily declining, each year small pieces of the puzzle called postal history are lost forever, mainly because no one cared. Much more work must be done in the attic to uncover the ancient secrets, but preserving the recent past is equally important. Many a small post office now closed can be included in the invitation because the last postmaster may still live in the area. If you do your part, you can help preserve the history of your post mark. Take your postmaster to lunch and ask him: When the office first opened? Where did it open? Why this particular name? Who was the first postmaster? Often these beginning questions can start a long monologue on the part of the postmaster, on a subject dear to his heart -- his post office. Knowing the dates of opening and the first postmaster can make the search for early covers much easier. The knowledge can also make it possible for the possessor to "find" items in dealers' fun or junk boxes at low prices, and certainly make the search more fun. What changes occured in the office? When? When made a First Class post office? Was it ever a Village Carrier office? Once again, the knowledge becomes your answer to enjoyment and establishing a unique character for your collection, being able to identify transition points in your post office history. Or changes in the postmark. Various colors used in the cancels, slogans, falg, etc. When? With the increased value attached to postal history items, the need for experts in identification, classification, and authenitcation of legitimate examples of your post office will make your knowledge and research invaluable in the field of postal history. Who were the postmaster? You might get this information from the Bureau of Operations, Washington DC When was the first woman hired or appointed postmaster? Few items can add to a community's pride as the knowledge of its past. Your search for the origins of the post office for the community can make such a contribution. Developing and preserving the nugget of local folk-lore associated with the post office may be only the beginning of a source of community pride. These small local secrets can lead to fuller enjoyment of the hobby by you and by others if you share them. Postal history's search of the attic must be supplemented by the oft time neglected memory of the postmaster. Take your postmaster to lurch and start your research. -Paul T. Jackson- If you think it is a good idea, why not try it? If you wonder how it would or could work out, send $1.2 to Paul T. Jackson, PO Box 231, Raritan, NJ and ask for "A brief history of the Raritan, Post Office." The Cumberland Co. Historical Society has several publications available at very reasonable prices. Vanaman's Maurice River Town ($6.9), Eimer's History of Cumberland County_ (reprint at $8.9), Sickler's Tea Burning_ Town (reprint at all available for tne society at PO Box 16, Greenwich, NJ NJPH 3

FORWARDED 184 PHILADELPHIA TO LONG BRANCH TO LANCASTER This letter originated in Philadelphia addressed to Deal, Liberty Pole Post Office. It received the blue Philadelphia strike dated July 2 (184) and the in a circle to start it on its way. Since Charles was not at Deal, it was forwarded with an Eatontown, NJ manuscript marking and readdressed to Lancaster, Pa on July 31st. It must have gone from Eatontown to Long Branch where it received a strike on August 2nd. Note that there is no additional charge shown for the forwarding. Leon Reuisslle, in a letter dated May 1963, states that "Another ancient mercantile establishment was founded by Alexander McGregor in 1826, a store building being built at what was known as the 'Liberty Pole'. In this store, William R. Maps commenced his mercantile career as a clerk and became one of Long Branch's earliest merchants and bankers. "The first Fourth of July celebration was held in the village in 1838; a salute of 13 guns was fired, a procession was formed that marched to the Methodist Episcopal Church, where an address was delivered by the Rev. James H. Dandy. The Declaration of Independence was read, and an oration was given by William H. Slocum, after which the prcession returned to the Liberty Pole to the boarding house of Samule Cooper, where at four o'clock in the afternoon, dinner was served. The celebration was concluded in the evening with fireworks. "My guess is that the Liberty Pole was actually a flag pole at the then village center." He quoted the information from the History of Monmouth County, Lewis Publishing Co., NOJEX -William C. Coles Jr.- The Fall Meeting of the Society will be held in conjuction with NOJEX on Sunday, October 28, 1979, at 1PM. We will be meeting at the Airport Holiday Inn on US 1 in Elizabeth, NJ (near the Budweiser brewery!). We will have an extensive auction in conjuction with our meeting as well as hear the report of the nominating committee for new officers for NJPH 36

Originating in New Orleans on January 31, 18, this letter was address to Port Elizabeth, NJ. The "," in the strike was the rate due for a collect letter (effective June 30, 181). It apparently went to New Brunswick where it received the "MISSEND" on February 9, 18. The next strike is in red from Elizabethport, NJ. The date is blurred but seems to be MAR 2. At this time, Port Elizabeth was (and still is) in Cumberland County, so we wonder when the poor fellow finally got his letter. -William C. Coles Jr.- Gib,8_ect-ae.01~1011,...e NJPH 37
