Besides allowing the option of Bb1, and preventing attack of the Bishop in the likes of Nb6, the big idea is that Bc7 is failing now to Nb5 (Bb6, Bb4 and Black can get away with c5, but the Knight will land on d6 shortly.) 3 Here, Petrosian plays 14. g3! In my own words about Petrosian attitude: Keep flexible and 'torture' the opponent Rather than immediately playing f4, start by g4, then putting Knight on g3, then f4. That will also serve to protect the e4 pawn in case the center is open (over protection!) Also written there: "Karpov thinks differently!" 4 Botvinnik plays 13. f3!! that frustrates all this. Now after the trade on f6, White's playing e4 is VERY unpleasant for Black. Thus, prophylactic move that frustrates Black plans.
