1 Grid Notation Below you will find grid notation for all of the rhythms that appear in conventional music notation in the book. Grid notation simply lays out the rhythms for a phrase or pattern in a grid. With simple counting, you should be able to read these grids in a similar way to how musicians read conventional music notation. Rather than relying on these grids, you will probably find it much easier to learn most of the patterns and pieces aurally from the DVD. These grids can then provide a back-up to the DVD; you could use them to prompt your memory of certain patterns or to check you ve learned a rhythm correctly. For all of the pieces in the book, the grids are presented in a similar way to this one: ne and two and play the tam - bo - rim. Ganza igh low high, Sh Sh Sh Sh Sh a - go - go. Sh Sh Sh Gan - za, gan - za, gan - za, gan - za. Repenique/caixa Re - pe - ni - que cai - xa, re - pe - ni - que cai - xa. Surdo Surdo Sur - do, sur - do. The numbers in the top row represent the beat. This is the pulse that you clap or tap along to. The pulse may be slower or faster for different pieces, but within each piece it is always consistent. For an example of what we mean by the words pulse and beat, watch the videos that accompany the piece Brazil. The surdo part in this piece helpfully makes the pulse very clear, as the surdos just play on each beat. If you clap along to the surdo part in video clip then you are clapping along to the pulse. Each of your claps lasts for one beat, which is represented by one numbered segment in the top row of the grid. You can see in the second row of the grid that each beat is subdivided into four. This row presents you with the rhythm that the tamborims need to play. Different letters are used to signify different playing techniques the key to these is given in the next section, Playing techniques and notation. A blank square represents a rest, where you don t play at all. So in the example above, if you count to 6 ( beats that are each divided into ), the tamborim would play on numbers,, 5, 7, 9,,, and 5. The third row in the grid contains the words that accompany the tamborim pattern, which are just there to help make the rhythm easier to learn.
2 Most of the grids, including the one above, include patterns for more than one instrument. These patterns should be played together, i.e. any letters in the same column (but on different rows) are played at the same time. Within each piece, each small square in a grid represents a fixed amount of time. This means that you count all the grids for a particular piece at the same speed. owever, because the beat and tempo can vary from one piece to the next, you may need to adjust how quickly you read the grids for different pieces. The DVD should help to make it clear at what speeds you should aim to read the grids for each piece. If the instructions above seem far too complicated to understand, don t panic yet! ave a go at reading some of the grids as you watch the DVD, and try to match up what you read with what you hear.you will hopefully find that the grids start to make a lot more sense as you put them into practice.
