If East bids 1H, West will pass that and it will make. If the opponents compete, that is a different can of fish. The key bid to avoid on this hand is a 2H response by East. This hand avoids using a common bad treatment. A passed hand jump shift intended to show a maximum pass is not good bridge. East may not insist on a slam but it is worth looking for. West raises clubs, an important bid. East cue bids in diamonds and West in spades. East decides that it is not worth looking for seven given West is a passed hand, so East s 6C bid ends the bidding. This auction does mean West is going to play it, which is an occasional minus. When North doubles, East has an extra bid. Pass says he has the worst. 2H says he has a five card suit with a minimum opener. 2D remains as always, showing a good hand with game interest. East passes and South bids just 2S. The big deal here is that East and West get out of the bidding. West has a cheesy opening bid and East has a fairly boring Drury hand with only three card support. Why tell the opponents about your hand when game rates to have a chance? Even if the defense takes two hearts, you still have chances. Your chances are better if they do not lead a heart. What this sequence shows you is that opener can bid 4S on a wide range of hands starting with the big one that opener had on Hand 9 right down the ladder to the hand shown here.
