1 2 What I would like at my picnic Here the children will develop their knowledge of vocabulary associated with food. Resources CD: Images of food Words for food Picnic order form. Songs/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation of food vocabulary including how to say I would like..., track 11. Extras: Real items of food. Explain that sometimes French people celebrate Bastille Day by enjoying a picnic with friends and family. Tell the children that they too are going to have a picnic, but they need to decide what kind of sandwiches they would like, what fruit they would like and what kind of wine they would prefer. The children are shown images (or real items) of the variety of sandwiches they could have. They also see images of fruit. Lastly they see images of drinks some being white and red wine, (they are assured that for their picnic it will be blackcurrant juice or water, but they must pretend it is wine!). The children listen attentively while the teacher introduces the vocabulary for food including the word for I would like. The correct pronunciation for each image is available on the sound CD. The children have to complete a picnic order form on which they will indicate their name and their chosen food in French. They then share their picnic order form and practise the words on their menu asking each other for particular food and drink using the French words for I would like On my plate memory game Here the children will consolidate their vocabulary skills associated with picnic food. Resources CD: Templates for food images (2 sets of 10) Images of storming of Bastille Words for food and drink (2 sets of 10). Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for food and drink, Set 1, track 12; Set 2, track 13. In advance prepare sets of cards using the template available in the resource CD. Display a set of 10 food cards and play the CD for learning the words and practising correct pronunciation. Place the children in groups of no more than six. The teacher prepares and distributes sets of cards for each group which are placed face down in the middle of the table. The children pick a card from the cards that are face down in the middle of the table. They don t show anyone else but say On my plate there is..., and say in French the item of food that is on the card. The next person picks a card and has to remember the item from the last person without looking at their card, and then the child says the food item on their card. The game continues until someone forgets the food from previous players or the set of food cards are all used up. To restart the game, shuffle the cards and start with a different person. Note: depending on the abilities of the groups the teacher might decide to ask the children not to hide their cards at first so that they have time to understand and practise the words. 2 4 Play Pétanque Here the children will learn about how people in France enjoy a game not commonly played in England. Resources CD: Score Sheet Images of people playing Pétanque Website links for purchase of Pétanque games Word Pétanque. Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for Pétanque, track 8. Extras: Balls for the children, a smaller ball for the jack. Explain to the children that the French enjoy playing a game called Pétanque. Show the children pictures of people playing Pétanque and then tell the children they are going to play a modified version of the game where they get points for being the closest to the jack. The winner is the group with the highest score after 5 games. The children can play this game in the hall or, weather permitting, in the playground in groups of between 4 and 6. One child throws the jack towards the other side of the playground, then throws his ball, aiming for the jack (the balls for each team should be of the same colour to ensure no mix ups). The next child throws his ball to see if he/she can land it closer to the jack, etc. At the end of the game, the ball closest to the jack gets 4, 5 or 6 points depending on the size of group, the next ball gets one less point and so on. The children keep score on a sheet. Photocopy and distribute score sheets (see available template on the resource CD). A useful list of websites for purchasing Pétanque games is available on the resources CD. 5 Sequencing game for making a croque-monsieur Here the children will re-sequence instruction cards by reading the text and ordering images. Resources CD: Templates for images with French and English texts Blank record sheet. Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for the sequencing cards vocabulary, track 14. Extras: Toaster or sandwich toaster, bread, cheese, toasting bags (if using a conventional toaster). Prepare in advance sets of cards using the template for sequencing images available on the resources CD. Explain that French people love toasted sandwiches and one of their favourites is a cheese sandwich. Demonstrate how one would be made using real bread, cheese and a sandwich toaster or a toaster bag that can be dropped into a normal toaster. Show the children the different images (provided on the resources CD) and practise the text under each picture. Tell the children they are going to sequence a set of cards in the correct order, then record on their sheet how the croque-monsieur is made. The children are given a set of cards with images and text. They have to sequence the cards, then copy/stick the images and text onto their record sheet while practising the vocabulary (for both sequencing card and record sheet see templates in resources CD).
