1 Name SAVE Me!!! It s a lab no it s a game no it s a lab! (Rated M for Mature) Date So here s the deal. You are one of the classic stranded characters in pop culture and you need to be saved off random deserted islands that don t really exist. How is that for a premise? Look I m trying to find a more fun way to get you to practice latitude and longitude and lo-and-behold, this little game/lab is the product. Got a problem with that? I didn t think so! Let me introduce the characters: Wilson the Volleyball: Probably the most tragic of all stranded characters; the true castaway of the movie Castaway he so deserved an Academy Award for his performance. He still floats aimlessly in one of the seven seas WIIIIILLLSSSSON! (Talk about a movie with product placement ) Gilligan: The Skipper s poor lil buddy and the fearless first mate of the ill-fated Minnow that didn t make it back from their hour tour their hour tour. (and all because the weather started getting rough and their tiny ship was tossed ) Sing along if you like Jeff Probst: After many-a-season of hosting Survivor, he has become the king of stranding people in random exotic places. It is now his turn to sweat it out on these deserted islands. It looks like his lame little tiki-torch is about to be extinguished. Oh yes the tribe has spoken! Cartman: Why is he in this lab you ask? Well as Cartman would say, why the h@%# not! (Truthfully, I just ran out of ideas for people who might be linked to deserted islands.) Hey did you know that prominent publications and television channels have included Cartman on their lists of the most iconic television and cartoon characters of all time? I didn t know that actually myself. But, since many of you have found Wikipedia to be such a great place to cut and paste information into schoolwork as you plagiarize your way through life, I figured I d get in on the fun too by cutting and pasting that little morsel of info that I found! Let The Games Begin!!
2 . The randomizer will put you into a group of or 4. SAVE Me!!! GAME RULES. The character you will portray is determined alphabetically by your last name. Put yourselves in ABC order. Whoever is first in your order is Wilson, second is Gilligan, third is Jeff Probst, and fourth is Cartman. You will remain your character throughout the lab.. In Game you will place all the game cards given to you on a table spread out and face down. (No one should look at the cards.) 4. The first character (Wilson) will then pick a card and expose it to everyone. Each person in the group will then record the latitude and longitude values on the Game Data Sheet in his or her own lab packet. 5. Then each group member will try and determine which character is saved and record the name and number of that character next to the latitude and longitude values previously recorded. 6. Continue step #5 in character order until one character has been saved off each of the islands. 7. Write down the real name of your group member that won the game at the bottom of the page. The winner does get a prize (woo hoo!) 8. When you are done with this game see me and I ll give you the cards for the second game. SAVE Me!!! GAME RULES. Remember, you remain the same character that you were in Game, but you will be using MAP.. Once again, in Game you will place all the game cards given to you on a table spread out and face down. (No one should look at the cards.). The first character (Wilson) will then pick a card and expose it to everyone. This time you will see a character name and number record this on the Game Data Sheet in each of your own lab packets. 5. Each group member will then try to estimate the latitude and longitude of that character and record the numbers in the correct format on Game Data Sheet (you do not have to use minutes in this lab the nearest degree will suffice). USE THE POSITION OF THE ACTUAL NUMBER ON THE ISLAND WHEN ESTIMATING YOU LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE. DO NOT SHARE YOUR ANSWERS WITH EACH OTHER!! 6. Continue step #5 in character order until all the cards have been picked. 7. This time, when all cards of a certain character have been picked, that person is considered saved. In this game, however, EVERYONE PLAYS UNTIL ALL CARDS ARE PICKED RECORDING ALL ANSWERS FOR ALL CHARACTERS ON THEIR OWN Game Data Sheet. 8. Write down the real names of your group members at the bottom of the page in the order in which they were saved. 9. Once again, the winner will receive a prize, but only if the estimated values are acceptable based on the correct answers to the lab. If the first person who was saved has any wrong answers, the prize goes to the second person on the list. If that person is wrong, it goes to the next person and so on
