Les Cartes Misérables 2-8 players minutes Ages 10+ Guide the lives and deaths of characters from Victor Hugo s beloved novel, Les Miserables. The story starts with Fantine, a mother who gives her life to care for her child. Meanwhile, the relentless Inspector Javert pursues Valjean, a convict who evaded his parole. Valjean, whose cunning and enormous strength help him elude Javert, begins a quest for redemption and comes to care for Fantine s daughter, Cosette. Years later, everything changes when Cosette falls for Marius, a student who becomes involved in the brewing rebellion. With the help of Eponine, his admirer and a girl who knows her way on the streets of Paris, Marius must make a difficult choice: support his friends in the fight or pursue his love. Objective Strategically bid and take tricks to earn points, adapting as cards perish during play. The player with the most points after three rounds, or the player reaching a specified point total first, wins. 1

Components 66 Character in 6 colors/suits (Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Cosette, Eponine, Marius) ranked 0 through 10 in each color 8 Thenardiers Character, all of value 0 6 Countdown 8 Character Ability Reference 13 Destiny Setup Some Character and Destiny are not used, depending on the number of players. See the table below for Character Card Ranks Used and the seven Destiny Used, and return the extra Character and Destiny to the game box. Place the Destiny and all 6 Countdown in the table center. Place one Thenardiers Card on the table in front of each player. Return extra Thenardiers to the game box. Decide on a play mode (see Play Modes) and agree to a number of rounds or point goal. 2

Number of Players Character Card Ranks Used Total Character Used Destiny Used (7) Dealt to Each Player Total Remaining Undealt , 5, , 5, , , , , Game Play Les Cartes Miserables is played in rounds, each consisting of the following phases in order: 1. Shuffle and Deal. Character cards are dealt to each player. 2. Determine Destinies. Players simultaneously select cards from hand to determine the destiny of each character (how long the character s suit will remain in play this round). 3. Bid for Tricks. Each player predicts the number of tricks he will win this round. 4. Hand Play. Tricks are played and won. Characters (and their cards) perish. 5. Bid Resolution. Players earn points based on the accuracy of their bids. 3

Shuffle and Deal At the start of each round, gather all of the Character in play, shuffle them, and deal them so that each player receives the number of cards indicated in the Dealt to Each Player column of the table below. Number of Players Dealt to Each Player Total Remaining Undealt Fate Per Player Any undealt Character are set aside face down; they will be reshuffled with all of the Character next round. 4

Determine Fate Randomly shuffle the six Countdown and lay them in a left-to-right line in the center of the table. Spread the Destiny nearby. Next, each player chooses one Character Card from his hand and places it face down in front of him. These cards are referred to as Fate. When playing with four or fewer players, each player selects more than one Fate Card (see Fate Per Player in the previous table). Once all players have selected and placed their Fate face down in front of them, all Fate are revealed simultaneously. Starting with the leftmost Countdown Card in line, the player who revealed the Fate Card with the highest value matching the color of the first Countdown Card selects one of the available Destiny. He then places it directly above the matching Countdown Card. The highest number showing on the Countdown Card is the character s current Life Value. If no player chose a Fate Card matching the first Countdown Card, skip that Countdown Card for now. Example Countdown Card Setup. At the start of this round, Marius begins with a Life Value of 5. 5

Repeat this process going down the line of Countdown. Afterward, if any Countdown do not have Destiny, shuffle the remaining Destiny and randomly distribute one face up to each remaining Countdown Card. Set aside the unselected Destiny Card until next round. All Character used as Fate are then collected and set aside face down with any undealt Character until the end of the round. Bid for Tricks Whoever set the Life Value for the leftmost Countdown Card that was set by a player (and not randomly determined) is the start player for the round. Beginning with the start player and proceeding clockwise, each player states a number no lower than 0 and no higher than the number of cards he has in hand. This is his bid the number of tricks he expects to take this round. Players will want to bid as close as possible to the actual number of tricks they take as there is a penalty for taking fewer tricks and a bonus for taking the exact number of tricks bid (see Bid Resolution and Scoring below). Record each player s bid. 6

Hand Play Once all bids are recorded, the start player leads the first trick. The leader of a trick may lead by playing any card in his hand except: A Character Card with value zero. A Character Card for a character who has perished (see below). Whenever a trick leader cannot lead legally (either because his hand is empty or he has only zero-value or perished cards), he lays his remaining hand (if any) face up on the table and is out for the rest of the round. The lead passes to the next player clockwise. Players who are out of the round are skipped during subsequent tricks. After the trick leader plays, in clockwise order from the trick leader, each other player still in the round must play a card from hand. Each player may play any card from hand, except that he must play a card that matches the character/color of the card led by the trick leader, if possible. If a player cannot match the led character, he may play any card from hand. 7

The winner of the trick is the player who played the highest-valued card from hand that matches the character/color that was led, with the following exceptions (see also Special Abilities below): If any Javert (Black) were played into the trick and Javert is still alive, the player who played the highest-valued Javert Card wins the trick, except If Valjean (Green) is still alive, the Valjean (Green) Card of value 0 wins the trick, regardless of whether or not Javert are in the trick, except If Cosette (Purple) is still alive, the Cosette (Purple) Card of value 0 wins the trick if it is the last card played in the trick, regardless of whether or not Javert or Valjean 0 are in the trick. If not played as the last card of the trick, the Cosette 0 loses the trick. After the trick is complete, adjust each of the Countdown to reduce the Life Value by the number of cards of that character that were played into the trick just completed. For example, if the Marius Countdown Card showed a Life Value of 5 before the trick and 3 Marius cards were played into the trick, slide the Countdown Card so that a Life Value of 2 is shown. If all of the numbers on a Destiny Card become covered (indicating that at least as many cards of that character were played this round as the number on the Destiny Card), that character perishes. (You may wish to flip the Destiny Card face down over top of the Countdown Card to signify the character s demise.) In subsequent tricks, cards of that character cannot be led, and 8

any special abilities (such as trump; see Special Abilities below) of those characters are nullified for the remainder of the round. A character can only perish after a trick is complete, so all special abilities for living characters at the start of a trick are guaranteed to remain active through the trick. The trick winner collects all of the cards that were played into the trick and places them into a facedown stack in front of him. Stack taken tricks separately so the total number taken is obvious. The player who took the previous trick leads the next one. Trick play continues as long as at least one player is still in the round and at least one character is still alive. If all characters perish, the round ends immediately as no player would have a valid card to lead. If a single player remains in the round and still has living, non-zero cards in hand, he must lead them, adjusting Life Values with each play and automatically winning a trick for each card he plays. Once this player has only zero-valued and perished cards remaining in his hand, the round ends. 9

Example trick. Assume Eponine (Orange), Javert (Black), Valjean (Green), Fantine (Blue) and Cosette (Purple) are all still alive. Ann leads Eponine 3. Bob plays Eponine 6, a card of the suit led but higher value, so it is currently winning the trick. Cat has no Eponine cards in hand so may play any card; she plays Javert 1 which trumps Eponine and becomes the current winner. Dan also cannot follow suit and plays Fantine 0, a special card allowing Dan to play a second card at the end of the trick. Ed also has no Eponine cards and plays Javert 5, a higher trump which becomes the current winner. Flo also has no Eponine cards and plays Valjean 0 a card which wins (nearly) any trick, even those with trumping Javerts. Finally, Dan plays a second card at the end of the trick but has no Eponine cards, so he plays Cosette 0 which wins absolutely any trick when played last. Dan s Cosette 0 takes the trick, and Dan would lead the next trick. At trick end, reduce Eponine s and Javert s Life Values by 2, and Cosette s, Valjean s and Eponine s 1 each. 10

Bid Resolution and Scoring Each player counts the number of tricks he took during the round and compares it to the number he bid at the start of the round. Points are awarded to each player depending on the number of tricks he took as indicated in the table below. Number of Tricks Taken Points Awarded to Player Fewer than the number bid 0 More than the number bid The number bid Exactly the number bid The number bid + The round s Bonus Value Zero, and the player bid zero The same score received by the highest scorer this round + 1 The Bonus Value for a round equals 1 plus the number of characters counting only Valjean, Javert, Cosette, Fantine, Eponine, and Marius still alive at the end of the round. For example, if a player bid 3 tricks but took 4 tricks, he would score 3 points (the number he bid). If that same player instead took exactly 3 tricks, and two characters survived, he would earn = 6 points. Record points earned each round. 11

12 Player # Tricks Bid # Tricks Taken Score Ann = 7 Bob = 4 Cat Dan Ed Flo (Ann) + 1 = 8 Round Bonus Value: 2 Characters Still Alive + 1 = 3 Scoring Example. Since two characters were alive at the end of the round, the Bonus Value is = 3. Bids made exactly. Ann makes her bid of 4 exactly and receives points equal to her bid plus the bonus value, for a total of 7. Bob also made his bid of 1 exactly giving him 1 point for his bid and 3 points for the bonus, for a total of 4. Bids exceeded/missed. Cat takes one more trick than she bid, so she does not receive the bonus; but because she took at least as many tricks as she bid, she still earns points equal to her bid, or 2 points. Dan took one less trick than he bid. Because he failed to make his bid, he earns no points this round. Zero bids. Ed ended up taking a single trick. He earns no bonus and only receives points equal to his bid. Unfortunately, his bid was zero, so he receives zero points. Flo made her zero bid; she earns as many points as the highest scorer this round (Ann) plus 1, so her score is 8.

End of the Game If playing a fixed number of rounds, the game ends after the final round. If playing to a fixed point goal, the game ends when at least one player has reached or exceeded that total. In either case, the winner is the player with the most points. If multiple players tie, the winner is the player tied for the lead who earned more points in the final round. Round Restart If this is not the end of the game, collect all Character in play, including those set aside that were not dealt to players and those that were used as Fate. Return any Thenardiers played into a trick to the game box. (If a player has an unplayed Thenardiers 0 card on the table in front of him, it remains available for the next round.) Then start the next round from Shuffle and Deal above, randomly reordering the Countdown and dealing new hands to each player. More on Bidding Zero A player who bids zero (or who later adjusts to a bid of zero via the Marius 0 card; see Special Abilities below) only earns points if he makes his bid of zero exactly. To help accomplish this, when a zero-bid player plays his Thenardiers 0 card, he may immediately (before the next card is played) increase or decrease a non-perished character s Fate Value by 1. If a character is reduced to a Fate Value of 0 through this action, the character may perish after the current trick. 13

Special Abilities The following cards possess special abilities that affect play. Remember, if a character perishes, any special abilities on his or her cards are nullified and cannot be used for the remainder of the round. with nullified special abilities may still be played but will not win tricks. All Javert Valjean 0 Cosette 0 Eponine 0 If Javert is alive, all Javert cards are trump, and the highest-valued Javert card in a trick will win the trick. If Valjean is alive, the Valjean 0 will win any trick, even those with Javert cards. If Cosette is alive, the Cosette 0 will win absolutely any trick even those with Javert cards or the Valjean 0 but only if played as the last card of the trick. If played otherwise, the Cosette 0 loses all tricks. When played, if Eponine is still alive, its player may name any living character and value. The player who holds that card in hand must reveal that he has it. 14

Fantine 0 Marius 0 Thenardiers 0 When played, if Fantine is still alive, once all players have played a card into the trick, the player of the Fantine 0 card must play a second card into the trick, still following the color led if possible. Only count the player s second card when resolving the trick. When played, if Marius is still alive, its player may immediately revise his bid down by one if desired. The new bid value is used during bid resolution at the end of the round. Thenardiers 0 cards may always be played (never led), even if a player could otherwise play a card from hand matching the character/color that was led. When played by any player who bid zero, its player may immediately increase or decrease a non-perished character s Fate Value by 1. Thenardiers never perish. 15

Play Modes There are several ways to play and score Les Cartes Miserables. Some options include: Play a fixed number of rounds. Three rounds takes about 30 minutes. Play until one player reaches a pre-established point total. For a game of approximately minutes, see suggestions in the table to the right. With 4, 6, or 8 players, play in partnerships seated on opposite sides of the table. Partners may not openly discuss strategy or cards held. Each partner bids individually in turn; then partner bids are combined, and partners attempt to collectively take a number of tricks equal to their combined bid. At round end, score each partnership based on the number of tricks both partners took together compared to their combined bids. The additional Thenardiers 0 power is only available to an individual partner who bid zero.
