1 Old Basing and District U3A Bridge Improver s Course eek 7 Review of uit Bids (part 1). Over the coming weeks we will have a look at suit bids, responses and re-bids. This is, of course, a huge subject. o we will start with the basics and work through bids and their meanings. ever forget that the objective in the bidding should be that each bid should tell partner more about the hand thereby making it easier to reach the best contract! If you can stick to the basic rules your chances of achieving this objective are considerably enhanced. Opening Bids. If partner opens what does this tell us? 1. artner has a minimum of about 12 points (but remember rule of 20 openings) 2. artner has a maximum of about 19 points. 3. artner has at least 4 of the suit bid. 4. artner does not have points and a balanced hand. If partner opens what does this tell us? 1. artner has a good hand with a minimum of about 18 points or 8+ playing tricks. 2. artner has a maximum of 22 points. 3. artner has at least 4 of the suit bid and probably artner does not have points and a balanced hand. 5. artner will expect a bid from us unless there is an intervening bid by opponents. If partner opens what does this tell us? 1. artner has a very strong hand with 23 points or 10 playing tricks. 2. artner will expect a bid from us unless there is an intervening bid by opponents. 3. artner has said OTHIG about. 4. This is a forcing bid and you must respond - ass is OT an option. If partner opens 3+ what does this tell us? 1. artner has a weak hand (usually fewer than 10 points). 2. artner has at least 7 of the suit bid 3.
