1 Presents: 1 NO TRUMP FORCING
2 The 1 No Trump Forcing convention is an integral part of the Two over One System. What can we bid with this hand in the auction below? QT9 AKJ9 Rule: After Major Suit openings at the 1 level, the response of 1 No Trump will: So South s bid of 1NT in response to partner s 1 opening bid shows: 6 12 pts. almost any Shape North must bid at least once more as a result of the 1NT bid. 1. show 6 12 total points 2. be forcing for one round We would normally bid 2 with this hand but that bid is Game Forcing (showing 13+ points). So what do we do? Note: After a 1 opening bid every new suit bid will be at the 2 level or above. 1NT is the best bid with our hand to the left. We intend to bid again with this hand and will get another chance because 1NT is forcing for 1 round.
3 AFTER MAJOR SUIT OPENINGS WE WILL, MOST OFTEN, HAVE 2 CHOICES All 2/1 Bids Two Over One Game Forcing DO NOT ENTER with less than 13 total points Think of these two choices as two doors. The 2/1 door is for all of our game forcing hands. We can not go through this door without at least 13+ points. Entering this door forces our partnership to game. The 1NT Forcing door is for all of our hands that are not good enough to make a game forcing bid. You go through this door with almost all of your hands that are 6 12 points. 1 No Trump Forcing ENTER HERE with your 6 12 points 1NT Forcing Bids 1 1NT 1 1NT Remember: We only use 1NT Forcing after Major suit opening bids.

6 RESPONDING TO THE FORCING NO TRUMP BID AQT98 K4 AT94 The key point to remember is that the 1NT bid is Forcing for one round. So, if our opponent passes, we must make a bid! So how do we decide what our next bid is? Most Common Responses to 1NT Forcing With 6+ Cards in our Major and: Points, Bid 2 of our Major Points, Bid 3 of our Major With 5 Cards in our Major and: Points, Bid a New Suit Balanced, Bid 2NT Can you pick out the best bid for South s hand now?

South must bid something and their 4 card Diamond suit is the most logical choice on this hand. Let s bid a few more hands. 9 SPECIAL SITUATION WITH 1NT FORCING What the Potential Bids Mean: 2 = 6 9 points & 3+ Spades 3 = points & 4+ Spades 2 = 13+ points & 5+ Hearts 2 = 13+ points & 4+ Clubs This is a Special Situation that the 1NT Forcing bid can help us with. What would you bid with this hand in response to North s 1 Spade opening bid? 1NT = 6 12 points All of the suit bids are wrong for our hand. The only thing that fits is 1NT. The beauty of the Forcing No Trump is that we know we will get to bid again.
10 SPECIAL SITUATION WITH 1NT FORCING Major Suit Raises: 2 of Major = 6 9 and 3+ support 3 of Major = and 4+ support 4 of Major = <10 pts. and 5+ support Responding 2/1, then bidding the Major at our next turn shows 13+ pts. and 3 card support. Rule: When our partner opens 1 of a Major, and we have pts. and 3 card support for our partner s suit, we START WITH 1NT. At our next turn to call we bid to the 3 level of the Major Suit. Responding 1NT, then jumping to 3 of the Major at responder s next turn shows, pts. and exactly 3 of Major. This is called a limit raise with 3 card support.
