got Bridge? McGregor Point Bridge McGregor Blvd. Ft Myers, FL BREAKING NEWS! Gold point at the club! On Wednesday, Oct. 25th, the club will be hosting the Instant Matchpoint Game. This is an ACBL tradition! After you play each hand, you open the traveller to find out how many matchpoints you won with 100 being the top score. Everyone across the ACBL will be playing the same hands. The cost for the game is $2 extra, which is worth it since winning a section top will award ONE GOLD POINT!! To qualify for the gold, all sections will be open, stratified. Get your best partner and sign up now for this very special game. Halloween Potluck! The game on Halloween will begin with a potluck lunch at 11:30. Bring a dish to share, the more ghoulish the better. Costumes are optional, but there will be a prize for the best costume of the "spookiest" man and woman. Come join in the fun. Thanksgiving Feast! Holidays are more special if they are shared with good friends. This year Rick and Val would like to invite you to join us for a Thanksgiving feast and club tournament. The club will provide the turkey, gravy and wine. The rest of the Thanksgiving fixin's will be potluck. We hope you will be able to share this special occasion with us. The cost is $12, $7 for guests eating but not playing bridge. If you wish to come only for the bridge game it is $9. We will have a sign-up sheet with a planned menu for dinner, so sign up for what you would like to bring. Dinner begins at 11:30 a.m. Volunteers to help with the preparations would be greatly appreciated! Please let us know if you are willing to help. And coming in November: 3rd - 5th Open Tournament 1

Straight Talk and Smart Talk Classes The best ongoing classes for players who already know the basics happen on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9 am to 11:30 am. On Saturday, Steve talks for about 15 minutes about a specific subject. There is no talk on Wednesday. Both days involve playing hands and getting advice from the experts during the bidding and/or after the play. They explain what you did right and what you did wrong, generally with a great deal of humor. Everyone who has come to these classes agree that it is a wonderful way to learn. The problems and solutions are immediate and the learning is more dynamic than just trying to read a book. You can learn with your partner or the club can find someone with whom you can play. Please let us know if you want to come. Call CHATTING WITH THE EXPERTS! Every Friday Q&A starts with a fun chat with Val & Rick. Listen and learn while they discuss bridge and answer your questions. Learn how to play with the same partner for 35 years without violence! Every Tuesday we will have an intermediate level discussion about bidding. Build a better picture of the conversation at the table. Check the white board for the topic of the week. All this is FREE! Brown bag it with us and gain the knowledge of the experts. The conversations begin at 11:00 AM. 4

Have a question? Get an answer here. Send your questions to info@thebridgeplace.com Dear Val, I picked up this hand -- AJxx, Jxxxx, x, xxx. My partner opened 1NT and the next hand passed. I transferred to hearts and passed. Partner's hand was KQxx, xx, Axxx, AQx. We lost a lot of tricks after the opponents forced my partner to trump diamonds in the dummy. Somehow other people played in spades. Can you help? -- wrong suit Dear Wrong, When you are playing in a partscore your goal is to get the contract that scores the best. In this hand you can see that spades is the superior spot. How can you get there? You have to have an agreement with partner that Stayman followed by a rebid below 2NT is not forcing, not even invitational. So you Stayman with your hand. If partner bids spades or hearts, you happily pass. If he bids 2D, you rebid 2H, expecting to play it there. This agreement in the partnership allows you to find the best trump fit and still stay low. 5

Dear Val, I was declarer in 4H and my trump holding was AT98 in the dummy opposite J5432 in my hand. With plenty of entries I finessed and lost to the king. I got in and played the AH, but my RHO opponent showed out, so I had two trump losers. Where did I go wrong? -- mad finesser Dear Mad, If you take the first finesse, you must take a second finesse. The only holding where this will lose is when the KQ doubleton is behind the ace. (Obviously, if is the KQ third or fourth behind the ace, you have two losers anyway). With nine trumps many players, just cash the ace, hoping to see a singleton honor in either hand. If this is the case, you drive out the other honor, holding your losers to one. If the ace does not bring in a high card, then lead a second trump, hoping they are 2-2. Whichever of these plans you choose to adopt, stick with it. By taking a finesse and then playing for the drop, it s like double crossing yourself. Good luck with this card combination. Dear Val, Please tell us about the balancing 1NT. For example, is it always used by a passed hand? If not, how do I distinguish between a balancing NT and a "real" NT? Do most players play that systems are on over the balancing NT? Do I really have to have the bid suit(s) stopped? (Love your column -- thanks for it). Frustrated Fran Dear Frustrated, Suppose the bidding is 1D, pass, pass to you. You hold AKx, Jx, QTxx, KTxx. If you double, partner is bound to bid hearts, for which you are not prepared. The solution is to lower the requirements for a balancing 1NT overcall to This allows you to compete with the minimum opening bid more often. If you have the same auction and hold a strong NT (15-17), you must balance with a double. If the bidding does not get too high, your plan is to bid NT at your next turn. Most players use all the systems they play after a NT overcall in a balancing situation (Stayman, Jacoby, etc.). My recommendation is to play systems on if the opener passes. So 1D p p 1NT p would mean systems are on. If the bidding is 1D p p 1NT 2D by opener, systems are off and all non jump bids are just competitive. In answer to your last question, yes, I have a stopper in the opener s suit. If you do not have a stopper and are relatively short in his suit, perhaps double is the best action. I might be talked into 1NT with AKx, Jx, xxxx, ATxx, since no other balancing action seems appropriate. The more length you have in opener s suit, the less likely partner has values. Remember, he passed over the 1D opening. 6

Let s cruise!!! March 10-17, 2018 on the Nieuw Amsterdam from Fort Lauderdale. Val will feature the 2 over 1 system and why it has gained such popularity in the expert bridge community. Val and Rick offer plenty of bridge activities daily - lessons and discussion groups as well as duplicate games. The itinerary may be adjusted. Space is limited book early to ensure your place.
