2 ALL ABOUT JOAN S A KEEPER Our story starts with clean recipes filled with our favorite natural ingredients and fragrances, recipes that were perfected over 20+ years by Joan Troyer on her enchanting honey farm in New Carlisle, Ohio. Each candle, soap, balm, gel, and beauty product is inspired by the scents from those bright, dew-filled mornings, the horizons of wildflowers in bloom, picturesque sunsets and, of course, all the bumbling, buzzing masters responsible for pollinating the oasis. For Joan and for us, looking after bees and educating others on their importance has always been a passion project. Creating fresh, responsibly sourced products harnessing the unique healing powers only honey can provide became her, and our, way of raising awareness for the bees. So what are those unique healing powers only honey can provide? We re glad you asked. Honey is loaded with nutritious properties, from abundant antibacterial qualities for a natural clean to antioxidants that slow the aging process. Because after all, great skin is fundamental to good health, and the busy bee is nothing without one s health. WHO IS JOAN? Let s start with the obvious, she s our queen bee and one heck of a worker bee as well, which, to us, makes her the ultimate keeper. As an elementary schoolteacher in Bethel, Ohio, Joan Troyer had long been magically linked with bees she d say it was an affinity, one part curiosity and one part awe. From sweaters to socks to clay pots and everything in between, the buzzers peppered her life, and accessories and trappings of the sweet pollinators became her family and friends go-to gifts for her. After retiring from teaching, it was one such serendipitous gift from the middle of her three children Linda, Holly and Jeff that sparked her new venture: an antique bee box. What Holly envisioned as a cute planter, actually stirred Joan into taking up the dwindling art of beekeeping, and the rest, as they say, is history... Well, not quite so fast. In 1990 with the help of her husband Wade, Joan moved to New Carlisle, Ohio, began designing a haven for bees, and created what would become Honey Hill Farm. There she combined her two loves: bees and educating the young and old, in this case on the importance of bees in our delicate ecosystems. Of course, honey followed, or should we say, flowed. Lots and lots of honey. So much so she searched for the best ways to use it before discovering its rich properties made it perfect for soap. While she was convinced the soap-making process would somehow burn down her farmhouse, she didn t let it stop her. Instead, she gathered all the materials, strung an extension cord clear out to the driveway, and in the middle of the great wide open, she created her first slab of soap. Five years (and countless batches) later, she opened her own soap shop on the property. For the next two decades, she developed homemade recipes for more than 50 varieties of soaps and balms, recipes that incorporated all the things she loved: lilies blooming in the moonlight, the sugary aroma of apple blossoms, and lavender, the scent bees find most attractive. At the aged of 77, Joan retired from bee-keeping, and now, her children carry on their mother s deep love and tradition here with her high-quality, clean products as well as bee education for future generations.

5 WHAT ABOUT THOSE BEES Here are some A, BEE, C basics. 1. Bees come in peace. While the thought of being stung is wildly unpleasant, the last thing bees are looking to do is harm someone. Bees are determined workers, pollinating, building hives, producing honey and so much more. They only sting as a defensive last resort when feeling in danger. So while they may be curious around you, it s likely just that: a curiosity of a scent you re giving off while they search for flowers to pollinate. Don t let apiphobia the fear of bees get the best of you. 2. Sitting down to dinner? You have the bees to thank. With their ability to pollinate a sixth of all plants, bees are responsible for nearly a third of all the food we eat. Without them, in addition to a food shortage, it s likely a number of instrumental plants would die out, devastating countless ecosystems. 4. The best kind of jelly. There s honey, and then there s royal jelly. Royal jelly might be the only jelly not created from berries or another fruit. Secreted from worker bees, royal jelly is highly nourishing and what queen bees thrive and feast on, hence the name. The jelly has been found to have widespread medicinal benefits as well, especially in the treatment of asthma, digestive difficulties, liver disease, skin disorders and numerous other ailments. 5. More bees please! Given all the great things bees do, we say, the more, the merrier. To attract the buzzers to your backyard and grow their population, plant a variety of pollinators, both flowers and plants that bloom at different times throughout the year. Some of our favorites include Catmint, Cranesbill, Floxglove, Sedum, Poppies, and, of course, Lavender. 3. Honey: the secret to great skin. Honey is vitamin-rich and chock-full of nutritious properties. Its abundant antibacterial qualities make for a natural clean, and its antioxidants slow the aging process. Honey works by opening up pores and nourishing the skin with moisture. In doing so, it heals any damaged areas and strengthens the skin to protect it from harsh elements.
