4 Alabaster: A Primer By Ronnie Rosenbach A few years ago, the sales manager of a lighting manufacturer interrupted a meeting to take an urgent phone call. The caller was a frantic saleswoman in a lighting showroom: "I have a customer here who loves your alabaster lighting and I need to know quick. Alabaster - where does it come from: the mountain or the sea? " The real answer is neither. Alabaster is hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSo42H2O), a crystalline mineral which in a dehydrated form is common gypsum. Most of this mineral which is quarried for use in lighting comes from alluvial deposits near the banks of the Ebro River in Spain. Other alabaster deposits are found in centuries-old quarries in Italy, near Pisa. However, what little alabaster remains there is very difficult to extract, as are other minor deposits in other countries. There are three major types of alabaster: the opaque, chalky stone which is ground up and used in gypsum or plaster: the escaglione, a semitransparent type which resembles rock crystal, first used by the Italians; and the third, translucent variety used for the bowls and shades imported for today's lighting. While alabaster occurs naturally in a rainbow of colors, the translucent type used for large lighting fixture diffusers is white with randomly-occurring irregular veining in mottled greybrown tones. Pieces used for lamp bases and other small parts might be cut from any of the three types. After asking what alabaster is, the next question asked by both retailer and consumer is; "Why is alabaster expensive?" The answer lies in how and where it is found as well as how it is worked. Alabaster is found in rocks surrounded by other minerals within veins of variable depth (6"-20") in which it occurs. Since alabaster in its natural state deteriorates from exposure to extremes of temperature and weather, surface or near-surface veins are not worked. In order to find usable stone, therefore, heavy earth-moving and digging equipment is necessary just to find the deeper veins which average only 13" in depth. Compare that with granite or marble, for example, of which there are literally entire mountains, to begin to understand the difficulty and high cost of quarrying alabaster. Add to that the high percentage of waste and the limited supply of the translucent stone and it's not hard to appreciate alabaster's value. Like many materials that we assume are recent discoveries, alabaster has been around for a very long time. In fact, ancient Egyptian alabaster carvings are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Imagine, Cleopatra might have poured wine for Mark Antony from an alabaster vessel. We know both the ancient Chinese and Greeks also carved alabaster; modern Greeks still use it for floor tiles. There are two other frequently-asked ACCES- 4 BASICS questions: Why can't a manufacturer who uses alabaster guarantee that fixtures will match? And how can one tell the difference between a vein and heat discoloration? The answer to the first question is fairly simple once one understands how alabaster is quarried. It is scooped out of the ground with a huge steam shovel, not cut in a straight-sided block, as is done with marble. The factory where the alabaster is worked receives a pile of rocks of many sizes and shapes. Many of these rocks yield only one large piece and each one is literally one-of-a-kind. Some pieces may be completely white while others may have heavy veining. A sales person who understands this can enhance the desirability of purchasing a natural material that is the real thing - and looks it. Identifying a piece of alabaster that is discoloring due to exposure to the intense heat of a light source is easy. too, once one knows what to look for. Remember that the type of alabaster used in lighting fixtures is translucent and you have the answer: the telltale spot that is heat-affected will first turn an opaque, chalky white. That's because the heat is causing the water (the H2O part) in the stone to evaporate from the inside of the stone outwards. Thus, if there is a brown spot on the outside of the piece before the inside has turned opaque white, chances are you are looking at a vein and not a discoloration. The rocks containing the alabaster, varying in size and weight from 30 lbs. to almost a ton, are delivered to the factory. In order to get at the "corazon" or heart of the alabaster rock, pneumatic hammers are used to chip off the unwanted outer layer made up of other minerals and soil. The larger cleaned rocks may then be cut into slices of different thicknesses which are determined by the height of the pieces to be produced. Next, solid cylinders, their sizes dictated by the diameter of the finished piece, are drawn from the slices. A metal disc is then glued into the center of the cylinders, which can easily weigh 200 pounds or more. A hoist is used to lift the cylinders onto a lathe which is used to cut out the desired shapes. Until this point, up to 75 percent of the rock, which is bought by weight, much like we buy beef, has been wasted. It's something like buying a 16 oz. T-bone steak and, after trimming the fat and deboning it, ending up with 4 oz. of edible meat. An alabaster bowl weighing 50 lbs. may have come from a half-ton rock. Sounds pretty low tech, doesn't it? It is, but this is where the craftsmen's ancient technique comes in. Alabaster is a relatively soft stone, which measures 2.5 on the Mohs scale, the accepted standard for measuring the relative hardness of stone (granite rates about 6.5). Like other stones it can be intricately carved, but larger pieces of alabaster are usually worked in more of a woodworking than a lapidary process. The stonecutter's art makes the best use of stone - each one reveals its unique quality only after the heart is uncovered. A high percentage of the stones shatter on the lathe since the veins sometimes cannot withstand the machine's vibrations. An expert stonecutter can reduce the breakage, but many pieces still end up unusable. Once the desired shape emerges, the piece is ready for sanding. Four different grades of sandpaper are used ranging from very rough to very fine. It is this last, steel wool type that leaves the sensuously smooth surface that is so attractive. The piece is now sprayed with a coat of polyurethane to close the pores and prevent deterioration of the surface. For those who can't resist tampering with nature, it is at this point that color can be added to the spray to tint the stone. Consumers frequently want to know how they clean alabaster, once they've bought an alabaster fixture. The answer is simple: use a damp - not wet - soft cloth and gently wipe the piece clean. Above all, never use detergents or abrasives. Alabaster has attracted lighting fixture designers from the beginning of the early electric period. The natural translucence of the stone was the ideal material to soften the harsh, glaring light produced by the first light bulbs while hiding the electrical components as well. Then, as now, an alabaster shade covered a multitude of sins. The furniture and accessories designers of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods in Europe were admirers of the distinctive beauty of alabaster and lovingly incorporated stone diffusers into their lighting designs. A Sunday afternoon spent exploring the antique furniture shops on Melrose in West Hollywood or in New York's SoHo district almost always reveals a few original antique alabaster fixtures. World War II saw the decline of the more luxurious materials, including alabaster, of the 20's and 30's. It wasn't until the early 1980's that a few prescient U.S. lighting manufacturers rediscovered the beauty and almost limitless applications of alabaster. While considered a fad at first, alabaster lighting components are now being utilized by a growing number of manufacturers. Alabaster has made the transition from a style to a material, which can be used in almost any application in which glass has been used.
