First United Methodist Church Georgetown Living Out God s Love Everywhere We Go
Dear Families, Advent is the season when we prepare ourselves to receive God's gift of Jesus. It is a time of getting ready for the celebration of Christmas. We invite you to use this list of live nativities, resources from our Family Advent Celebration, and the week by week suggestions in this book as inspiration for a meaningful Advent season. Blessings, Laura Painchaud Director of Children s and Family Ministries Carrie Johnston Children s and Family Ministries Coordinator
Local Live Nativities for your Family to Enjoy Bethlehem Village At the Downtown Georgetown Christmas Stroll November 30: 5-9 PM December 1: 10 AM - 8 PM Bethlehem Village is a yearly enactment of the birth of Christ that is presented in downtown Georgetown during the annual Christmas Stroll. More than a nativity, it s a window into first century Bethlehem life right at the moment of Jesus birth. Encounter and participate in a busy market full of tents dedicated to wood working, grain milling, coin pressing, cloth dying, bread making, toy making, and much more. Live musical presentations every 20 minutes. Live Nativity and Blessing of the Animals Bethany UMC, Anderson Mill Rd, Austin December 7 and 8, 6:00-8:00 PM Experience the Christmas Story portrayed by Bethany families and live animals! There are six continuous 20-minute presentations each night. Families are encouraged to bring blankets to sit on in the grass. Chairs will be available around the perimeter on the sidewalks. A petting zoo for children to pet, hold, and feed the animals. Bring a non-perishable food or toiletry item for Hill Country Community Ministries. Bring your pet (leashed or in a carrier) to the Ark to receive a blessing from one of Bethany s pastors. Be sure to bring your camera or phone to have your photo taken. Drive-Thru Luminary Live Nativity Immanuel Lutheran Church, 500 Immanuel Road, Pflugerville TX December 8 and 9, 6:30 9:30 PM Drive through or walk through luminary with about a dozen scenes with live animals and people depicting the Christmas Story. Live Nativity Immanuel Lutheran Church (Church on the Hill), 411 CR 401 Taylor TX December 8 9, 5:30 8:30 PM Free tours every 20 minutes. Donations accepted for Shepherd s Heart Food Pantry and Hutto Food Bank. Main Street Bethlehem in Burnet 300 E Washington St., Burnet TX December 7-9, and 14-16, 6:00 9:00 PM Visit Bethlehem... in Burnet Texas... as the ancient city of Christ s birth comes alive again. Feel the anticipation of Joseph and Mary approaching the gates, urgency quickening their steps. Pick your way through transients, peddlers, the crippled, and aged in the town s fringe. Experience the presence of animals as they affect all aspects of life in that time camels, donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, and doves. Explore the narrow streets to faint strains of ancient music and savor the smells of fresh goat butter, campfires, and hot bread. Then immerse yourself in the din of the marketplace; the revelers in the tavern, shouted insults to and from the Roman oppressors, merchants, craftspeople, taxpayers, and beggars all seeking money, or position, or revenge. Search for the inn, only to find it full (as others did long ago). Then follow the trail to the cave where a road-weary couple has moved in with the animals, their place in God s plan and secular history to be made secure on this night. For the child in their arms was the incarnation of God Himself, come to the world that all who would place their faith in Him might enjoy eternal fellowship in His presence. Admission is free (donations are accepted). Tour buses are welcome. Free cookies and hot chocolate/coffee are served at the exit. Friday and Sunday night visitors may experience a shorter waiting time than on Saturday night. This is outdoors and canceled in rainy weather. Cancellation is published on the webpage by noon. Backpacks are not allowed inside the gates.
Week 1: December 2-December 8 Nativity Focus: Angel Advent Candle: Hope Word of the Week: Prepare Scripture Reading: Luke 1: Prayer: Dear God, there s so much we hope for this season. Help us to focus on you. Amen. Family Conversation Starter Check the words you think describe the angel. Beside each word, write the name of someone in your family who shares this trait. Encouraging Responsible Honest Weekly Advent Activities Adding to Your Advent Box Write the name of the person you shared the angel ornament with on a piece of paper. As you place the paper in the box, say a prayer for that person. Family Mission Opportunity Sign up in the church office to deliver a poinsettia and Christmas card to a home-centered member from the list any time December 2 4 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Pick up plants, cards, names and addresses in the church office. You may even want to gift your angel ornament to this person! Make an Angel Ornament and card to share with a friend or neighbor to spread some HOPE and help them PREPARE for the Christmas Season. Week 2: December 9-December 15 Nativity Focus: Joseph Advent Candle: Peace Word of the Week: Listen Scripture Reading: Matthew 1:18-24 Prayer: Faithful God, thank you for giving us peace. Help us to listen to what you re saying to us. Amen. Family Conversation Starter Check the words you think describe Joseph. Beside each word, write the name of someone in your family who shares this trait. Courageous Protective Faithful Adding to Your Advent Box It was about 80 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem and might have been a 7-10 day trip for Joseph and Mary. See how far your family can walk this week and think about what that walk was like for Joseph. LISTEN to the sounds on the walk and think of what Joseph might have heard. Pick up something on your walk that makes you think of Joseph to put in your box. Family Mission Opportunity Participate or attend the Christmas Musical at the Wesleyan Estrella on Sunday 12/9 at 4:00 p.m.
Week 3: December 16-December 22 Nativity Focus: Mary Advent Candle: Joy Word of the Week: Watch Scripture Reading: Luke 2:5-7 Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the joy in our hearts. Help us watch for signs of your love this week. Amen. Family Conversation Starter Check the words you think describe Mary. Beside each word, write the name of someone in your family who shares this trait. Humble Trusting Excited Adding to Your Advent Box Imagine the joy Mary must have felt. Draw a picture of something that brings you joy. Thank God for that thing as you put the picture in your box. Family Mission Opportunity During the week, collect baby items, baby food or formula to donate to the Caring Place to bring young families JOY. Week 4: December 23 December 25 Nativity Focus: Shepherd Advent Candle: Love Word of the Week: Wait Scripture Reading: Luke 2:15-20 Prayer Loving God, thank you for Baby Jesus. We love you. Amen. Family Conversation Starter Check the words you think describe the shepherd. Beside each word, write the name of someone in your family who shares this trait. Nurturing Dependable Watchful Adding to Your Advent Box As the shepherds searched for Baby Jesus, search for signs of God s LOVE these last few days before Christmas. Find something that helps you remember God s love to put in your box. Family Mission Opportunity Participate in FUMC cookie delivery for people working on Christmas Day by either baking cookies in advance or signing up to deliver them.
More Advent Activities Paper Clip Angel Make an Angel Ornament to share with a friend or neighbor to spread Hope and help them Prepare for the Christmas Season! What You Need 12mm Round Pearl Bead Butterfly Paperclip (about 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches) 1/8 Inch Wide Ribbon What You Do 1. Choose a bead, and use an ice pick or other sharp object to clean out the hole so you can push the ribbon through it. Don t try to enlarge the hole, just clean it out. 2. Cut a piece of 1/8 inch wide ribbon 11 inches long. Cut the ends on a diagonal. 3. Slightly twist the ends of the ribbon to start threading it through the hole, making sure the ribbon ends are even. 4. Use the loop end to push through the paperclip as shown. Use an opened paper clip to help push the ribbon through. 5. Make a lark s head knot, or pull the ends and bead through the loop and pull up snuggly against the top of the paperclip center. 6. Make another knot on top of the bead. Pull both ends of the ribbon through a loop and pull this knot up snugly against the top of the bead. You will have a knot on each side of the bead. 7. Make another knot near the ends of the ribbon. Trim the ends neatly on a diagonal, and hang using the ribbon. Gingerbread Nativity Use your imagination and an assortment of ingredients to create your own gingerbread nativity scene.
Glowing Paper Advent Candles Traditionally the Advent wreath has five candles, one to light each Sunday during Advent & one in the center to light on Christmas Day. To create these candles, collect some cardboard tubes, scissors, markers, decorating materials, and battery-operated tea lights. To make the cut-out shapes in the candles, gently fold the tube in half & cut out half of the desired shape. Unfold the tube to reveal the whole cutout shape. To make flames for the candles, use yellow foam roughly cut into flame shapes, & stuck to the inside of the candles. To make the candles glow, tuck a led tealight under the base of each. As we reach each Sunday in Advent, light the candles along with the previous ones. Also light them at meal times & when people visit. 1st Candle - Hope (plus sign, or cross) This reminds Christians that hope is like a positive light shining in the darkness. It encourages us to hope & pray for peace in our world. 2nd Candle - Peace (crown) This is a reminder that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Jesus' light helps us to shine, & helps us find ways in which we can share God's peace with people around us. 3rd Candle - Joy (star) This is a reminder of the star & the angels who brought tidings of great joy, & those who followed them to discover the joy in the stable. As we wait for Christmas Day we pray for those who'll be celebrating the joy of Christmas with us. 4th Candle - Love (heart) This is a reminder of God's gift of love, Jesus. On Christmas Day, Light a real candle & place in at the center or use the 5th one your family created at the Family Advent Celebration to celebrate Jesus' birthday. Children s Nativity Scavenger Hunt What you need Paper, pen (or printer if you type the clues), a basket, a nativity scene with figures, and a Bible or book about the Christmas Story. What to do Write out clues for each figure, like I am the Son of God. I was born in a manger. Who am I? Find me in the dining room. Hide the figures in the places you chose in your clues and place the basket of clues in the stable of the nativity. Gather by the nativity and read the story. Have your children tell you who is missing, read the clues, and find the missing pieces. Discuss who they are and why they are important, and place each figure in the stable as they are found. Family Nativity Scavenger Hunt Look for nativity scenes as your family is out walking or driving to look at Christmas light displays. What you Need Family Nativity Scavenger Hunt Checklist from A clipboard or hard surface to write on, and a pencil or pen. What to do Check off each item from the list. Your children may love to dress up as wise men as they go out looking for the nativity.
