3 About the Pattern The patterns featured this month are described below. Revealing one calendar marker each day allows students to make and test predictions and to discover the pattern as new markers are added and their predictions are confirmed or proven false. Don t tell them what the patterns are: instead, allow them to pursue their own ideas and investigations. The first pattern most students will observe is the repeating ABC color pattern: orange, yellow, blue, orange, yellow, blue, and so on. This ABC pattern is also repeated in the models: tally marks, Bundles & Stickss, ten-frames. The quantity represented by the math model matches the date and grows by 1 each day. Revealing one calendar marker each day allows students to make and test predictions and to discover the pattern as new markers are added and their predictions are confirmed or proven false. Don t tell them what the patterns are; instead, allow them to pursue their own ideas and investigations. Fall objects in four categories repeat in a series during the month: red and green apples, leaves in and out of a basket, acorns and walnuts, and pumpkins and squash. The quantity of fall objects represented grows by 1 each time that set of objects repeats. The number of calendar markers in a set of objects shown in a series repeats twice and grows by 1 (3 apple markers, 3 leaf markers, 4 nut markers, 4 squash markers, 5 apple markers, 5 leaf markers, 6 nut markers). Within the set of markers there is an inverse relationship between the two varieties of objects shown. (For example, as the number of red apples increases by 1, the number of green apples decreases by 1.) Notes: The Math Learning Center

7 About the Pattern Following is a description of the patterns found in the November calendar marker set. Allow your students to discover these as the month progresses. The markers alternate picture, word(s), picture, word(s), picture, word(s) throughout the month. The snacks shown (cookie, sandwich, pizza, cracker, pie) go from a whole to a half to a quarter each time a new item appears. The shapes of the snacks alternate: circle, square, circle, square. The animals repeat in a pattern of 1 bear, 2 dogs, 4 mice. The words repeat in a pattern of Chomp!, Gulp. Gulp., nibble nibble nibble nibble. The words are in sets of 1 word, 2 words, and 4 words. One word in each set is printed in red to show fractions of a set (e.g., in the phrase nibble nibble nibble nibble, three of the nibbles appear in blue, while one appears in red). 9 About the Pattern Following is a description of the patterns found in the December calendar marker set. Allow your students to discover these as the month progresses. The shapes repeat in a pattern of cylinder, rectangular prism, sphere, cube. After the first sequence of four different shapes, the next repetition of the sequence uses 2 markers in a row featuring the same shape (2 cylinder markers, 2 rectangular prisms markers, 2 sphere markers, 2 cube markers). Then the pattern sequence begins again, this time with 3 markers in a row of the same shape. The final sequence begins with 4 in a row of the same shape. Notes: The Math Learning Center

About the Pattern Here is a list of the patterns in this month s Calendar Grid sequence. There are always three equations and then a math story problem. The first of the three equations is always subtraction, while the two that follow involve addition. The story problems alternate between subtraction and addition through the month. Beginning after marker 3, every fourth marker (7, 11, 15, and so on) begins with the total or the difference (e.g., 3 = 2 + 1). The total or difference on each marker matches the date. 15 About the Pattern Here is a description of the patterns found in this month s Calendar Grid sequence. There are four analog clocks in a row; the color of the analog clock frames repeat in a red, yellow, green, brown pattern. Every fifth marker depicts a digital clock shown in a real-world context. Time on each clock increases sequentially from 12:00 to 12:00 and then starts over as it does during the day. The time shown on the clocks repeats in a pattern of 1/2 hour, 1/2 hour, 1 hour increments. Notes: The Math Learning Center

17 About the Pattern Allow your students to discover these patterns as the month progresses. The figure on marker 1 can be folded into congruent fourths. The figure on marker 2 can be folded into congruent halves. The figure on marker 3 cannot be folded into congruent parts at all. This sequence continues through the month in an ABC pattern. The first two of every three figures are symmetrical, while the third is asymmetrical, forming an AAB pattern. Every fifth figure is an alphabet letter, resulting in an AAAAB pattern through the month. (The 6 letters can be unscrambled to form the word wholes, which is the answer to a riddle posed during Activity 5 this month.) Notes: The Math Learning Center
