If he chooses two socks, the chances that he draws out a white pair is 2/3. What are the chances that he draws out a black pair? He has a ZERO chance of drawing out a black pair. Since there is a 2/3 chance of drawing a white pair, then there MUST be 5 white socks and only 1 black sock. The chances of drawing two whites would thus be: 5/6 x 4/5 = 2/3. With only 1 black sock, there is no chance of drawing a black pair. 2) Diaphanous was a Greek mathematician who lived in the third century. He was one of the first mathematicians to use algebraic symbols. Most of what is known about Diophantus's life comes from an algebraic riddle from around the early sixth century. The riddle states: Diophantus's youth lasted one sixth of his life. He grew a beard after one twelfth more. After one seventh more of his life, he married. 5 years later, he and his wife had a son. The son lived exactly one half as long as his father, and Diaphanous died four years after his son. How many years did Diaphanous live? The riddle, the "facts" of which may or may not be true, results in the following equation: x/6 + x/12 + x/ x/2 + 4 = x where x is Diophantus's age at the time of his death. Therefore, Diaphanous lived exactly 84 years. 3) Transform each of the top words into the word on the bottom. You can only change one letter at a time. Don t change the order of the letters. Neither Anna nor Mike ate the pear, so Sam did. Mike doesn't like oranges, so Anna ate the orange and by elimination Mike ate the banana. 5) Find a 4-letter word for each blank below so that when added, two new words (sharing the same middle word) are created. Suppose that gear B makes twenty complete turns every minute, explain the relative speed of gears A and D? Gears A and D rotate at the same speed. Gears of equal size will rotate at constant speeds irrespective of smaller or larger gears in between them. 13) This is a ziggurat. Start off at the top with a four-letter word to be guessed according to the definition that is given to you. Then work downward, adding the indicated letter to the higher-up word through anagrammatization.

After bringing the fox to the other side, and leaving it with the grain, the man returns back to the original side, retrieving the chicken, and making his 3rd and final trip crossing the river. At no point was the fox left alone with the chicken, or the chicken with the grain. 18) Only one word can be anagrammed from SPRINGIEST. What is it?
