4 Introduction Fun Beginning Puzzles for Kids, Book 1 is the perfect puzzle book to get kids interested in working popular puzzles. Besides being fun, puzzles help to improve math skills, vocabulary, fine motor skills, patience and concentration. The puzzles in this book are not designed to be difficult. Older children should be able to read and solve most puzzles without difficulty, while younger children may need the assistance of an adult to read and write in answers. Regardless of age these beginning puzzles will instill a sense of achievement when completed. Research confirms the benefits of reading and playing with young children. These puzzles are designed to provide another source of fun, meaningful, educational instruction. About the Authors and Acknowledgements Noah and Michael Ealy are a father and son team who, in addition to other wide and varied interests, enjoy creating and solving puzzles together. We would like to thank the following people, in no particular order, for their suggestions and support. Gina Ealy, Alex and Haley Young, Lisa Daniel, Grandma Joyce, Grandpa Ray and Yia Yia, Pappa Jerry and Grandma Helen. 3

13 How to Play Word Search Word search is very similar to number search. The only difference is you are looking for words instead of numbers. Each puzzle has a theme. Some concentrate on short or long vowel sounds, while others include a list of words with a similar beginning blend sound. Just as in the number search puzzle, all answers are listed either down or across. None of the answers can be found in reverse order or diagonally. Practice Puzzle In the practice puzzle shown on the right, you are given a partially completed puzzle. The first four words have been found, circled, and marked off (BAT, PAT, SAT, and TAX). The next two words have been found but only partially circled and marked off (DAD and MAN). The last two words have not been found yet (JAM and ACT). Compete this puzzle by finding, circling and marking off the remaining words. When you complete the puzzle, you can check your solution by turning to page 117. Have fun! 26
