1 Use the questions below to assess students prior knowledge of Level B Number Worlds content. If students have difficulty drawing rings, allow them to point to the answer they think is correct. Repeat the questions if necessary. Do not reword questions. If students show understanding of 14 or more of these 18 items, continue to assess student understanding using Placement Test C. If students do not demonstrate understanding of at least 14 items, they should begin instruction in Number Worlds, Level B. You may also choose to give students Placement Test A. Using the Number Worlds Placement Tests Each level of Number Worlds contains a placement test to determine whether students understand the content in each level of the program. Every placement test assesses knowledge of two adjacent levels of Number Worlds so you can observe and compare information about which level s content is appropriate for each student. Placement Tests in Levels A C Number Worlds Levels A C are targeted for use by students in Grades PreKindergarten through Grade 1. Placement of students at these levels should begin by evaluating their success on the Placement Tests on pages Level B Placement Test Instructions 1 Look at the numbers at the top of the page. Which set of numbers shows the correct way to count from one to five? If the student cannot read the numbers, say them aloud. Draw a ring around the numbers that show the correct way to count from one to five. Students should ring the sequence Look at the light bulbs in the box. How many are there in all? Draw a ring around the number that shows how many light bulbs there are. Students should ring the 7. 3 Look at the numbers. Which is the number? Draw a ring around the number. Students should ring the. 4 Move down to the next row of numbers. Look at the numbers, and listen carefully. Which number is bigger than 7? Draw a ring around the number that is bigger than 7. Students should ring the 9. Look at the sets of butterflies. Which set has the most? Draw a ring around the set of butterflies that has the most. Students should ring the group of 3 butterflies. 6 Look at the row of shapes. Which shape is a square? Draw a ring around the shape that is a square. Students should ring the square Placement Test Level B Placement Test Level B 19 Placement Test, Level B In Levels A C, the placement tests are designed to be administered individually to children by a teacher, classroom aide, or parent helper. The tests at these levels consist of teacher s instructions and reproducible test masters. The test questions for these levels are intended to be read to the students while the test administrators track students answers on the Placement Test Record on page 99. If students demonstrate understanding of more than 7% (at least 14 of 18) of the test items, continue to assess student comprehension using the test for the next level. If students do not demonstrate understanding of at least 14 items, they should begin instruction in that level of the Number Worlds Program. To gain an even more thorough understanding of a student s knowledge of number, use the Number Knowledge Test on pages of this Assessment book. The Number Knowledge Test was designed to assess central conceptual knowledge typically acquired by children around the ages of 4, 6, 8, and 10 years. 6 Assessment Overview

2 Placement Tests in Levels D H Number Worlds Levels D H are targeted for use by students in Grades 2 6. Placement of students at these levels should begin by evaluating their success on the reproducible Placement Tests on pages You may choose to assess students on only one topic of concern or assess students on their knowledge of several topics at each level. In Levels D H, the placement tests may be administered to children by a teacher, classroom aide, or parent helper. The assessment consists of topic-specific tests at two levels. The first page assesses knowledge of content in the previous level, and the second page assesses knowledge of the content covered at this level. Unit 3 Placement Test Circle the correct answer Which problem is equal to 13? A 6 1 (6 1 1) A 1 8 B 6 1 (7 1 1) B C (6 1 1) 1 (7 1 1) C D (1 1 1) D At the first stop, 8 children got 6 Which equation shows addition on the bus. On the next stop, 9 sentences that are equal? children got on the bus. The bus A stopped again, and 6 more children B got on. How many children in all C were on the bus? A 1, ,029 B C 1,84 2 1,323 D Addition Placement Test Level E Addition and Subtraction Placement Test Level F 17 Placement Test, Level F Assessing Topic Knowledge Have students complete the first page of the Unit Placement Test. If students do not successfully compete 7% of the items on the first page of the test, administer the Unit Placement Test for the previous level. If students demonstrate understanding of more than 7% of the items on the first page of the Unit Placement Test, have them complete the test. If students do not demonstrate understanding of more than 7% of the items on the second page of the test, but have demonstrated understanding of the items on the first page, they should begin instruction in this level of Number Worlds. If students demonstrate understanding of more than 7% of the items on the second page of the test, administer the Unit Placement Test for the next level. The best practice is to assess a student s knowledge of the entire level of content and to place him or her in the first unit in which he or she begins to show difficulty. Assessment Overview 7
