1 Deal or No Deal Creating Interactive Games in a Flash! The actual Deal or No Deal is completely a game of chance in which contestants attempt to guess which suitcase contains the million dollar amount. In order to make this educational game, students must answer a vocabulary/trivia question correctly in order to claim a briefcase, all of which are opened at the end of the game. Students maximize their chances of getting the million dollar one by amassing the most suitcases. Slide 1 is the title slide with the theme song. Slide 2 explains how to play the game. Slide 3 is the game board with the 30 briefcases. Clicking on a briefcase will change the color of the briefcase s number (indicating it has been selected, however to be won, a team must answer the question correctly). If a team gets the question wrong, simply click again on the briefcase and the number will become yellow again. Slides 4 and on are the question slides. The game is set up for 50 questions, but you can delete any unused slides (or add more). Click on the 1 st question and replace the text with your actual question (do the same for the answer). Continue entering questions until they have all been entered. 1

2 The reason for having more questions than suitcases is twofold: 1) You need to allow for students getting a question wrong. 2) After all briefcases are claimed, continue asking questions so that teams answering correctly can steal other teams suitcases. Do NOT change the title (in this case Question01 ) as it is necessary to navigate to questions in random order. 2

3 The final slide displays the monetary amount and is used to tally scores. Behind each monetary amount is a suitcase. Clicking on the monetary amounts will make the box disappear thus revealing the suitcase number. The team with that suitcase records the winnings and adds them up. The winning team is the one with the most money at the end of the game, but not necessarily the one who gets the million dollar suitcase. It is recommended that you change the order of the briefcases under the monetary amounts for each game. Move the monetary amount boxes to the side, then move around the suitcases. Now select all the monetary amount boxes and move them to cover up the suitcases. 3

4 1. Open the "Deal or No Deal Template". 2. Save the file with a meaningful name. 4. On the 1st queswon slide, delete the word queswon and enter the actual queswon. 3. Determine how many "queswons" you want to have. (If less than 50, delete any unnecessary slides.) 5. Now enter the answer by replacing the word "Answer". 6. Go to the next queswon slide and repeat steps 4 through 6 for as many queswons as you intend to have. 9. Save the presentawon. 8. Test the game by selecwng "Slide Show" and make sure everything works properly. 4

5 Preparation Before the game, you should cut up your hardcopy of the game board so that each briefcase is cut out. Have a student helper be the person who passes out the earned suitcases when teams answer correctly. On the CD, there is also a word document with a table containing numbers from 1 to 120. Cut these out and put them (one for each question you have) in an envelope. The same student helper will pull randomly- selected questions to ask. Playing the game Divide students into reasonably- sized teams. Have teams elect a leader or spokesperson who will be responsible for choosing the briefcases. Team 1 picks a briefcase. Click on the number of the briefcase and you will see the number disappear indicating it has been selected. Have your student helper choose a random question from his/her envelope. Now click on the small icon in the lower left hand corner (or right click anywhere on the screen). You will be shown a menu. Choose Go to slide. The menu will expand and will show you a list of all available slides. Choose the question number chosen by your helper (this is why it is important to label each slide with a question number in the title). The question will appear and you will read it aloud to the class. Teams ring in to offer their answers. The first team to answer the question correctly wins the suitcase (the student helper delivers the suitcase for the team to keep). Click on the little briefcase in the lower right hand corner of the question slide. This will take you back to the game board. (Notice that the number of the briefcase that has been claimed has disappeared to indicate it is no longer available.) If no one offers a correct answer, go back to the game board slide and click on the previously- chosen briefcase to put the briefcase chosen BACK into play. Continue play until all of the briefcases are claimed. 5

6 If there are questions left after all briefcases have been claimed, you may proceed directly to the end slide to open the briefcases (by clicking on the star located in the lower right hand corner of the game board slide) or you may choose to finish answering all questions with those teams answering correctly being allowed to steal briefcases from other teams. (If doing this, be careful not to allow multiple teams to steal from the same group or force teams to steal alternatively from different teams.) Proceed to the final slide by clicking on the star located in the lower right hand corner of the game board slide. Now it is time to tally the score. Starting with the $0.01 box, click on it and reveal the suitcase that contains that amount. Teams keep track of their own winnings. Continue to the climax when the $1 million dollar briefcase is revealed. 6
