1 Math Saxon Course 3 Summer Packet To prepare for your 8 th grade math course you need to watch the 8 videos listed on the ACE website. Please make sure that you watch them carefully and fully understand them as we will not be covering this lessons at the beginning of the year. The video titles are listed below: 1. Lesson - Order of Operations. Lesson 6 - Converting Measures 3. Lesson 7 - Rates and Average/Measures of Central Tendency 4. Lesson 8 - Perimeter and Area 5. Lesson 9 - Prime Numbers 6. Lesson 10 - Rational Numbers/Equivalent Fractions 7. Lesson 11 - Percents 8. Lesson 1 - Decimal Numbers Your written assignment is to complete the written practice for lessons 5, 10, and 14. You will find those questions on the following pages.

2 Example 3 Compare 3 of an hour and 5 of an hour. Explain why your answer is reasonable. Solution 3 of an hour > 5 of an hour The answer is reasonable because 3 of an hour is greater than half an hour and 5 of an hour is less than half an hour. Practice Set a. How many minutes is 1 6 of an hour? b. Justify Three fifths of the 30 questions on the test were multiplechoice. How many multiple-choice questions were there? 7 Example If a taxi company charges a $ flat fee plus $3 per mile (m), then the cost (c) in dollars of a taxi ride is shown by this formula: 3 m + = c Suppose that the cost of a taxi ride is $0. Find the length of the taxi ride by solving the equation 3 m + = 0. Solution This equation means that the number of miles is multiplied by 3, then is added making the total 0. 3 m + = 0 That means that 3 m equals 18. Since 3 m equals 18, m must equal 6. So the taxi ride was 6 miles. m = 6 Discuss Why does 3 m + = 0 mean that 3 m = 18? Practice Set a. A formula for the area (A) of a parallelogram is A = bh.
