3 Biodiversity IUCN Partnership Holcim is committed to minimizing our ecological footprint Holcim partnered with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to develop a Biodiversity Management System (BMS) Global initiative that supports Holcim s Triple Bottom Line strategy Corporate Social Responsibility Sustainable Environmental Performance Key component of the BMS is establishing Biodiversity Action Plans (BAP)s at the most sensitive sites for the group companies. Holcim has established an operational roadmap target to develop Biodiversity Action Plans (BAP) at 80% of sensitive sites BAPs are a 5-year program reviewed annually, updated every 5 years 3

4 Biodiversity ORM Target & Risk Matrix How were sensitive sites determined? Level of Biodiversity Risk is based on a combination of the Importance of the Site and Impact of Operations Four (4) HCA sites require BAPs: Acton, Carden, Cayuga, Milton 4

5 Biodiversity Management System HCA is committed to aligning the BMS with Regional and Provincial biodiversity objectives and targets (i.e. Ontario Biodiversity Strategy) BMS has established a priority to partner with ENGOs and regulatory agencies particularly for sensitive sites Partnerships with ENGOs can result in greater opportunities for relationship building and community engagement ENGOs would focus on their area of expertise (i.e. vegetation, birds, amphibians) BMS is designed to provide measurable trends, baselines and targets Demonstrate contributions to conservation and environmental benefits as part of site rehabilitation activities Monitoring activities to focus on rehabilitated lands, new sites/extensions and buffer lands 5

8 A Partnership with the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) is Currently Under Consideration to Support the Goals of the HCA Biodiversity Strategy NABCI began in 1999 as an innovative approach for the conservation of all birds, in all habitats across North America. The Governments of Canada, United States and Mexico have all committed to implementing the NABCI strategy and Action Plan. National Steering Committees in all three countries guide the NABCI initiative. NABCI brings together governments, NGOs, the private sector, and the citizens of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Canadian members include Environment Canada, MNR (all provinces), Wildlife Habitat Canada, Ducks Unlimited, Nature Conservancy, Mining Association of Canada, Bird Studies Canada, and other partners from Canada s various bird initiatives. Holcim has landholdings in all three (3) countries HCA has evaluated options under this program and are currently pursuing involvement in the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture Coordinator 8

13 HCA Mississauga Greening Corporate Grounds Implementation/Next Steps 1.Identify suitable areas for the initiative as per the Land Development Master Plan for the Mississauga Cement Plant (COMPLETE) 2.Identify scope and short (Phase 1), medium (Phase 2) and long term (Phase 3) project focus in the Greening Corporate Grounds Checklist (Being Finalized) 3.Communicate project scope and master plan to CVC (in preliminary stages) 4.CVC ecologists will conduct a site visit which will include soil samples and species identifications (site visit complete, follow-up site visit required to assess shoreline) 5.CVC will develop concept plan for HCA s approval (to be completed) 6.Implementation will involve ongoing support from GCG Team (to be completed) 13
