3 Task A Training for a race Imran is training for a 10 kilometre race. He asks his friend Ben, for some training advice. This is Ben s advice: For the first week of training, you should run 4 times. Your training runs should cover a total distance of 20 25km in that week. Your first run should be short - no more than 3km. For every run that is less than 5km, you must do 3 runs of more than 5km. You must have a rest day after your longest run. 1(a) Based on Ben s advice, draw a table to show a training plan for the first week of Imran s training. The table should show the days of the week and the total distance he should run on each of his training days. (4 marks) Page 3 of 16

4 Imran goes to his local athletics track to train for the race. 1(b) One lap of the track is 400 metres. Imran wants to run 6km. How many laps of the track must he complete to run 6km? (3 marks) Page 4 of 16

5 1(ci) Imran looks at a running website. It advises this formula to calculate target training pace. Target training pace per km = Target time for 10km + 20 seconds 10 Imran s target time for 10km is 60 minutes. What is Imran s target training pace per km? (2 marks) 1(cii) Imran runs for 2km and checks his stopwatch. This is the time it shows his 2km training run has taken: 12:54 Imran thinks his actual training pace is too slow compared to his target training pace. Is he correct? Explain your answer. Imran knows that his race time is likely to be 2 minutes faster than his training time. Based on these training times, how likely is Imran to complete the race in 1 hour? (3 marks) 1(e) Imran finds some information about last year s 10km race: Number of runners: 620 Number of runners completing race in under 1 hour: 192 Imran wants to finish in the top 30% of all runners. 9 Task B The Bird Table Layla works in a Care home. She wants to make a bird table so that the residents can watch birds feeding outside. She finds guidance about making a bird table on a website. The website suggests that the table is mounted onto a post. The post should be at least 1300mm high. It should also be more than 12cm shorter than the height of the person who will be cleaning it. Layla will be cleaning it. She is 1.56m in height. 2(a) Suggest a suitable height for the post that Layla could use to mount the bird table on. (3 marks) Page 9 of 16

10 Layla finds this piece of wood. She thinks she could use the wood for the top of the bird table. She records the air temperature and the numbers of birds visiting the bird table each day. If the temperature does drop by 7ºC, what should Layla record as the temperature for Saturday?
