Beginners can be teamed up with experienced butterfly watchers. We ll have stories, a craft, and we ll meet an animal, or take a hike. Turtles Wednesday June 12th 11:00 am Butterflies Wednesday July 10th 11:00 am Snakes Wednesday August 14th 11:00 am Ohio River Sweep Saturday June 15th 9:00 am 12:00 pm Chilo Lock 34 Park Join thousands of volunteers along the 981 miles of the Ohio River for the annual Ohio River Sweep. Help us remove tires, bottles, cans and other trash from the river to help keep it beautiful. Due to the difficult river access, volunteers at this location should be ages 12 and up. Participants will receive a free t shirt and lunch following the cleanup. Call to sign up. Wonderful Wetlands Wednesday July 10th 7:00 pm Chilo Lock 34 Park What lurks beneath the water of the wetland at Chilo Lock 34 Park? Come find out as we explore the life of the amphibians and reptiles that call the wetland home. Become an honorary herpetologist by catching and identifying some of our smallest, but noisiest animals. Be prepared to get your feet muddy! Meet at the Visitor Center.

3 Junior Naturalist Program Get outside, get active, and discover more about the world around you. We re offering a new, fun hands on nature program for kids of all ages. If you have a son or daughter with an interest in nature, then this is for them. Attend any 5 naturalist programs and earn a certificate and patch. Stream Splash Wednesday July 17 6:30 pm Cool off from the hot summer sun as we explore the East Fork of the Little Miami River. We ll search for crayfish, snails, and many other aquatic critters. Then discover what those bugs can tell us about the health of the river. Be prepared to get your feet wet. Close toed shoes are recommended (no sandals). Fascinating Fossils Wednesday July 24th 1:00 pm Take a trip back in time to when Ohio was covered by water. Discover what lived here millions of years ago and what they left behind for us to find. Explore our creeks as we look for fossils and learn about the geology of Clermont County. Adventure Series The Park District is partnering with Roads Rivers and Trails Outfitters to offer several adventure programs. Stay tuned as we ll have more to offer in the fall as well. Hiking Basics Saturday July 6 10:00 am /Wilson Nature Preserve Join our experts from Roads, Rivers, and Trails Outfitters for a day of instruction on what to pack, what to wear, and places to go. Then practice your new skills on a day hike afterwards. Paddling the Little Miami Friday July 19th 10:00 am Kelley Nature Preserve Join the park naturalist along with staff from Roads Rivers and Trails as you enjoy the state and national scenic Little Miami River. We ll meet at Roads Rivers and Trails in Milford and take a shuttle to Kelley Nature Preserve. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. Some paddling experience preferred. 4 Bird Watching for Kids Wednesday August 7th 6:30 pm Join our naturalist as we look into the lives of our feathered friends. We ll learn to find and identify some of Ohio s common birds by sight and song. Learn the fine art of birding by looking and listening for the birds at. Butterflies and Blooms Sunday August 11th 1:00 pm Kelley Nature Preserve The meadow at Kelley Nature Preserve is full of summer blooming wildflowers. Join us as we enjoy the wildflowers, and see what butterflies can be found. Monarch Butterflies Sunday August 18 Chilo Lock 34 Park 2:00 pm Monarchs are one of the most recognizable and most well known butterflies in the U.S. But, did you know the worldwide monarch population is in decline? Join us to discover more about these fascinating long distance migrants, including how you can help stop their population decline. Then we ll take a hike in search of butterflies, caterpillars, and even eggs. Spotlight Species American Bullfrog (Rana catesbiana) Bullfrogs are one of the most common, and the largest, frog in Clermont County and throughout Ohio. Often observed along the edges of ponds during the summer months, bullfrogs can also be heard on warm summer evenings. As with all frogs in Ohio, bullfrogs are nocturnal when it comes to their mating habits. Beginning in early June, and continuing through the summer, male bullfrogs begin chorusing, or singing, to gain the attention of any interested females. Their mating call is very recognizable and sounds as if they are singing jug-o-rum. With their large size, bullfrogs have been known to prey on small birds, mice, small snakes and even other frogs. Unlike most of our other frogs, which mature from tadpole to adult in a few months, bullfrogs reach maturity after about 2-3 years as tadpoles. Because of their longer juvenile stage, bullfrogs typically breed in larger ponds, rivers, and lakes, where they can find permanent water. Whereas, most of our smaller frogs prefer temporary pools of water where there are no fish to prey upon their eggs and tadpoles. Take a summer hike through Crooked Run State Nature Preserve, and you re sure to see a few bullfrogs sunning themselves along the edge of the pond.

7 Asian Longhorned Beetle Invades Clermont County The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Ohio Department of Agriculture are continuing to monitor the status of the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) in Clermont County. The ALB is an invasive destructive pest native to Asia. The ALB feeds on its host tree and will eventually kill it. The ALB prefers maples, but will also use buckeye, hackberry elm, ash, birch, and willows as its host tree. If the ALB continues to spread, it will be very destructive, resulting in thousands of dead trees. As of May 29, 436,858 trees have been surveyed and 9,805 trees have been found to have been infected within the 61 square mile quarantine area. Of the infected Trees, 9,385 have been removed. If you find evidence of the ALB on your property, report it to the Ohio Department of Agriculture at Adult ALB showing egg laying sites on tree bark. Egg laying sites in tree bark.
