Lowry s Pass 11,13 J 3 Pelagic Birding Tour with Cape Town Pelagics K 4,5 Agulhas Plain s Swellendam to Malgas and Infanta, Grootvadersbosch NR 36,40,42 L 6,7,8 Overberg Wilderness NP and Knysna Area 43,44 The SASOL numbers is referring to the site numbers in Southern African Birdfinder by Callan Cohen, Claire Spottiswoode, Jonathan Rossouw Birdlist The total number of different birds seen on 23 days of birding in the two South African provinces ended up round 300 species I guess a dozen or more species is missing do to lack of knowledge of their voices. Especially owls but also several forest birds like Yellow- Throated Woodland Warbler or Fynbos specialist like Knysna Warbler and Victorin s Warbler. With a little more effort and attention one the northern migratory waders at Velddrif and West Coast National Park a couple more species such as Curlew, Bar-Tailed Godwit and different sandpipers might have been on the birdlist as well Most sought after species which was not seen include African Black Duck, Chestnut-Banded Plover, Ground Woodpecker, Pink-Billed Lark, Sclater s Lark and Karoo Eremomela. The most common and widespread species that surprisingly was not seen must be Cape Penduline-Tit

3 Notes - Selected species: African Penguin The breeding colony at Stony Point in Betty s Bay is much better than Boulders Beach, Simons Town Yellow-Nosed Albatross sp. Only young non-separable birds were seen on the Pelagic Tour Bank Cormorant breeding pairs on a sea rock app. 5 km. south of Simon s Town Goliath Heron 1 adult bird seen at Rondevlei Hamerkop 1 bird flying over at waterpond near the junction toward Malgas from Buffeljagrivier N2 Hottentot Teal 6 birds seen at the coastral estaury of Wilderness National Park Verreaux's Eagle 1 imm. bird flying with prey over Sir. Lowry s Pass Black Harrier 1 adult bird seen flying low in West Coast NP. 1 adult bird mobbing a Jackal Buzzard near Swellendam Common Ostrich Wild population scarce. Introduced birds common especially in Western Cape. Also farming bird Blue Crane Common in the Swellendam Area. Several smaller groups with up to 42 birds. Day max app. 100 birds Secretarybird 3 birds seen in Kalahari Gemsbok NP. 1 bird on nest in a flat Acacia near Tanqua River - P2250 km 45 Kori Bustard 2 birds seen in dune area with Acacia trees short after the short cut from Dikbaardskolk to Kamqua Denham's Bustard 9 birds 3x2 and 1x3 seen in the most green fields south of Swellendam Ludwig's Bustard 16 birds seen along N7 from Cape Town to Bitterfontein. Look fore the most green fields and pastures Burchell's Courser A group of 4 adult birds and 2 pairs with both one big pull. seen along P2250 at km 7-9 and 56 Burchell's Sandgrouse More than 50 birds seen very well together with Namaqua Sandgrouse at waterponds in the morning Knysna Turaco Common and easily seen in the Wilderness National Park Knysna Woodpecker 1 bird seen early morning on both 7/11 and 8/11 in the Wilderness National Park Karoo Lark Especially along P2267 in the Tanqua Karoo National Park Red Lark 2 birds seen at Koa Dunes and several birds in the deserts around Brandvlei Eastern Clapper Lark A few birds seen in high song flight along R360 from Upington to Twee Rivieren Cape Clapper Lark Subspecies marjoriae seen and frequently heard in the Agulhas Plain s above red stony fields Subspecies apiata seen and frequently heard high in the sky along N7 north of Bitterfontein Agulhas Long-Billed Lark 5 birds seen between Malgas and the T-junction to Witsand on the dirtroad from Buffelsjagrivier Cape Rockjumper 1 pair seen at Gantouw s Pass on 1/11. 2 males and 1 female present in the same area on 9/11 White-Starred Robin 1 bird came very close as reaction on phissing near the Waterfall on the Giant Kingfisher Trail Cinnamon-Breasted Warbler 1 bird seen in a steep gorge in the mountain range near Gannaga Pass P2250, Tanqua Karoo NP Brown-Crowned Tchagra 1 bird came out of some scrub in a nice Acacia wooded area 30 km. past Molopo Kalahari Lodge
