Limosa GUIDED BIRDING & WILDLIFE TOURS SINCE 1985 Tour Info Bulgaria Black Sea Birding in Autumn Watching for raptors... participants on our September tour to Bulgaria Robin Chittenden/ Saturday 20th - Sunday 28th September LEADERS Gary Elton & local guide NEW ITINERARY! With the benefits of an extra day added and a fresh itinerary for 2014, our late September tour to Bulgaria is timed to coincide with the impressive autumn movement of birds of prey, pelicans and storks as they filter round the eastern end of the Balkan Mountains. A 9-day trip featuring six nights on the Black Sea coast and two along the Danube valley, this classic migration tour is also excellent for waders, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Red-backed Shrike and countless other passerines that shelter on Bulgaria s coastal headlands. Three-centre tour focusing on the bird-rich Black Sea flyway Late September is a peak period for raptors and other migrants Pelicans, herons, ibises and storks also heading south at this time Coastal marshes producing species of wader most trips Watch for Bee-eater, Roller, Hoopoe, Wryneck and Red-backed Shrike Pied Wheatear, Red-breasted Flycatcher and lots of other passerine migrants, too! NEW for 2014, two nights in the Danube valley for wetland birds and migrants Expect to see species during the week Our 30th visit to Bulgaria Expertly led by Limosa guide Gary Elton and a Bulgarian birdwatching guide LIMOSA, West End Farmhouse, Chapelfield, Stalham, Norfolk NR12 9EJ (UK) TEL: +44 (0) info@limosaholidays.co.uk WEB: limosaholidays.co.uk

Tour Overview Corncrake on the hotel balcony... Lesser Spotted Eagles all but brushing our noses with their wing-tips right outside the bedrooms... a party of Black Storks passing by at eye level as we breakfast in the restaurant... a male Pallid Harrier ghosting in from the sea at extremely close range... falls of Golden Orioles, Red-breasted Flycatchers and Icterine Warblers... a flock of 1200 roosting White Pelicans... up to 20 different species of birds of prey. These are just some of the many varied highlights from our previous autumn tours to Bulgaria s Black Sea coast. The annual migration of tens of thousands of birds of prey and storks across the Bosphorus in neighbouring Turkey has long been famous as one of the great European bird spectaculars. But the fact that the majority of these birds - plus countless thousands of pelicans, herons and other migrants - must first travel south through coastal Bulgaria was inexplicably overlooked by travelling birdwatchers until as recently as the late-1990s. As with migration anywhere, the make up and number of birds moving can vary enormously from day to day. But our tour is timed to run during the period when the spectacle of autumn migration along this secret flyway is typically at its peak. Arriving into Sofia and leaving via Bucharest gives us maximum time to cover as much of the available migration routes of the Bulgarian coast and the Danube as possible. By happy coincidence, some of Europe s most important wetlands are also to be found nearby. The coastal saltpans, freshwater lakes and reed beds are a vital staging post for southbound migrants and can hold an impressive array of specialities. White and Dalmatian Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorant, Little Crake, Broad-billed and Marsh Sandpipers, Bluethroat and Penduline Tit are among regulars we ve seen before. To the north, the coastal limestone steppe of Cape Kaliakra attracts falls of migrant wheatears, warblers, flycatchers and shrikes. Being so little visited, we have good chances here of finding something really special ourselves. Eagle Owl and Pied Wheatear have stolen the show in the past, while the forests just inland of the coast can be outstanding for woodpeckers. After six nights at the coast, we swing inland, heading west along the Danube valley with views of the open, floodplain landscape and chances of raptors and other migrants funnelling round the mountains to the south. The wetlands and trees along the River Danube itself can be real migrant traps in the autumn, hosting marsh terns, Black-necked and Red-necked Grebes, herons, pelicans and passerines - particularly good numbers of Red-breasted Flycatchers, shrikes and warblers. Here, Pelican Lodge will be our base for the final two nights of the tour, before we cross the Danube and make an easy return to Bucharest and our flight home. We first discovered Bulgaria in 1996 and our groups have been returning annually ever since. Our September 2014 tour will be Limosa s 30th visit to Bulgaria, when we shall be accompanied as usual by an experienced local birdwatching guide. Why not join us for an exciting week of birding, revelling in the annual movement of birds of prey, pelicans, storks and innumerable passerine migrants that stream south along Bulgaria s Black Sea coast every autumn? The prospect is irresistible! Outline Itinerary Day 1: Days 2-3: Day 4: Days 5-6: Days 7-8: Day 9: Fly London Heathrow-Sofia. Transfer east to our first hotel. 3 Daily Itinerary Day 1 FLY SOFIA, TRANSFER TO POMORIE We catch the British Airways morning flight from London Heathrow to Sofia, where our local guide will be waiting to welcome us. From here, we travel east along the southern edge of the Balkan Mountains to our first hotel at Pomorie (near Burgas), on Bulgaria s Black Sea coast. Although a journey of about four hours by bus, we believe you will find this is infinitely preferable to the 'alternative' of flying direct to the coast and arriving at the hotel around four in the morning on day 2. We will pause to stretch our legs along the way and watch for our first Bulgarian birds. Our hotel for the first three nights of the tour is a modern and comfortable property, next to the sea in Pomorie. We should arrive there in time for dinner this evening. Night Pomorie. Days 2-3 POMORIE: LAKES ATANASOVSKO, BURGAS, MANDRA & COAST Burgas is a large port on Bulgaria s Black Sea coast - but there just happens to be a major bird of prey migration route right overhead! The second half of September generally sees peak passage as columns of birds stream southward. We should see plenty of Common Buzzards (some showing characters of the eastern form vulpinus, or Steppe Buzzard ), along with good numbers of Lesser Spotted and Short-toed Eagles, Marsh Harriers and Sparrowhawks. A sprinkling of other species - including Black Stork, Honey and Long-legged Buzzards, Red-footed Falcon and Levant Sparrowhawk - adds to the excitement. The make up and number of birds moving will, of course, vary from day to day (and year to year), but that such a prospect should have been largely overlooked by travelling birdwatchers until relatively recently is surprising; even more so when one realises that some of Europe s major wetland sites also lie nearby! In fact, Bulgaria s most celebrated migration watch-point - Lake Atanasovsko - lies within an easy drive of our hotel. Despite being so close to town, the lake boasts a wealth of bird life. Kentish Plovers, Blackwinged Stilts and Avocets frequent the shallows and, amidst the thousands of Mediterranean and Yellowlegged Gulls that gather at the lake each autumn, we should find the rarer Slender-billed Gull. In autumn, Lake Burgas can hold thousands of roosting White Pelicans as well as a few rarer Dalmatians. Nearby, Lake Mandra is a frequent haunt of the immense White-tailed Eagle. During our stay at Pomorie we shall sift through flocks of migrant waders in hopes of such goodies as Red-necked Phalarope, and Marsh and Broad-billed Sandpipers - as well as frequently turning our eyes skyward to check for birds of prey sneaking by overhead! The passage of warblers through the area shows terrific potential for eastern vagrants to appear, while regulars at this time include Hoopoe, Bee-eater, Red-breasted and Spotted Flycatchers, and Red-backed Shrike. The latter can sometimes be abundant. Over the open water, graceful Black and Whiskered Terns work to and fro above parties of resting wildfowl. It s the perfect opportunity to study their trickier autumn plumages, while the reedbeds provide shelter for Great White and Little Egrets, Squacco and Purple Herons and Spoonbill. Nights Pomorie. Day 4 NORTH TO GORITZA & KAVARNA Tearing ourselves away from the fascinating wetlands of the Burgas area, we head north along the coast to our second hotel, at Kavarna. Our first stop may well be to check the local saltpans at Pomorie for some of the many bustling waders that pass through. Amongst the Dunlin and Little Stints, we may pick out Curlew Sandpipers and Ruff, but rarer species like Broad-billed Sandpiper are also possible. The journey will take us through an ever-changing landscape, past sprawling seaside resorts with extensive beaches, along rockier stretches with cliffs and through well-wooded valleys that are a haven 3 Any questions? 4 for birds. Despite the rather dreary sound of its name, in fine weather we will find that the "Black Sea" is actually a bright azure blue, its shores etched with bays of brilliant white sand. Although migration could bring us to a halt more or less anywhere today, we plan to stop to explore some fine deciduous woodland near Goritza. Short-toed Treecreeper, Hawfinch and a variety of woodpeckers are possible, but in the autumn raptors also use the hills and the main road as lines to follow; we have been lucky enough to see Pallid Harriers above Goritza itself in the past! Night Kavarna. Days 5-6 KAVARNA: LAKE DURANKULAK, CAPE KALIAKRA Set on a hillside overlooking the coast, Kavarna is perfectly situated for an autumn birding tour. Migrants of all shapes and sizes follow the valley here and, if conditions are right, the daylight hours can see birds of prey and storks passing right by us at eye-level! At night, the town s lights act as a beacon to nocturnal avian travellers. As with migration anywhere, the results are at their most dramatic during spells of mixed weather, when anything from Night Heron to Nightjar, plus waves of night-flying passerines, may descend upon the hillsides and hotel grounds. We once found a Corncrake on a hotel balcony here! Having made a thorough check to see what s new first thing, we will head to Lake Durankulak, a mainly brackish lake that lies just six kilometres from the border with Romania. Glossy Ibis, Pygmy Cormorant and Ferruginous Duck lend a distinctly eastern flavour here as we check through the gatherings of waterfowl and shorebirds. Not far away, the sheer, scrub-topped limestone cliffs of Cape Kaliakra are equally attractive to passerine migrants and act as bottle-necks to southbound raptors and other large soaring birds at times, Bee-eaters appear to pour south constantly and Red-backed Shrikes seem to perch on every bush! We will spend some time exploring the headland, which stretches out into the Black Sea as if beckoning Asiatic birds to make the crossing. In September, Lesser Spotted and Booted Eagles, Honey Buzzard, Osprey and other birds of prey can become grounded on the Cape during periods of inclement weather, which can also result in falls of... well, just about anything! We ve enjoyed some excellent birding here over the years and our previous finds have included Pallid Harrier, Spoonbill, Corncrake, Tawny Pipit, and Short-toed and Calandra Larks. Sea-watching from the cliffs might reward us with some scuttling Yelkouan Shearwaters and, as dusk approaches, we have also been lucky to see the impressive Eagle Owl here. Nights Kavarna. Days 7-8 WEST TO DANUBE VALLEY AT VETREN & SREBARNA If conditions are good, we may pay a final early morning visit to Cape Kaliakra, just to check for any new migrants that might have taken refuge overnight. Later, we'll make the relatively short drive northwest across rolling fields, this time passing to the north of the Balkan Mountains, to reach the Danube valley. Harriers can be seen quartering the fields as they slowly funnel east around the hills, and sometimes Rollers are found on roadside wires. The landscape changes as we pass through Dobrich and we have a chance to see more Lesser Spotted Eagles and perhaps even the local speciality Rook! Passing by the old Roman town of Silistra, we continue a short distance west to Vetren, which lies close to the world-famous reserve of Srebarna, situated next to the River Danube. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Srebarna hosts important breeding populations of Dalmatian Pelicans, herons and many other wetland species, including Pygmy Cormorant. In the autumn, many of these species may still be present, but there is also the added chance of seeing other species like marsh terns both Whiskered and Whitewinged Black Terns, or perhaps a Little Bittern will delight us, or Red-necked or Black-necked Grebes. 4 Any questions? Please call: +44 (0) Or see:

Our full day in the Danube Valley will be taken up with a return visit to Srebarna, with a chance to explore more of the reedbeds and surrounding trees for migrants we will keep a watchful eye on the sky too, as raptors can pass overhead in good numbers. Next to the mighty river itself, there may be some late dragonflies and butterflies to enjoy or perhaps a wild-eyed Black Woodpecker, if we are lucky. Our comfortable hotel, Pelican Lodge, is close by and we may take the short drive down to the River Danube itself. Nights Vetren Day 9 NOVA CHERNA MARSHES By taking advantage of an afternoon flight home from the Romanian capital, Bucharest, we will have time to enjoy some more birding along the excellent Danube valley this morning. The relatively new marshland at Nova Cherna is another special area along the Danube and may reveal yet more reed bed and wetland species. The scattered trees can hold passerine migrants too and will hope to find something new. Heading a little further west, we will cross the Danube at Ruse. The Danube Bridge was built in 1954 and this steel-truss bridge (the largest in Europe) is one of only two that connect Bulgaria to its neighbour Romania. Once across the Danube, we complete the short journey north to Bucharest and check-in for the British Airways afternoon flight to London Heathrow, where our tour concludes. Trip Information Group Limit 12 participants & 2 leaders Birds species Accommodation Three-centre tour based at typically modest but comfortable Bulgarian tourist hotels, all well-situated for the best autumn birding. Local Guide All our Bulgaria tours are accompanied by an experienced Bulgarian birdwatching guide supplied by our specialist local agent. What You Say... Both the British and Bulgarian leaders of our group were first class in their knowledge and enthusiasm particularly for birds, but for wildlife in general. They made every effort to ensure we got the most from our holiday... Robert Carr, Bulgaria, September tour... Brilliant to see migration at first hand - especially the Black Stork, Lesser Spotted Eagle and White/Dalmatian Pelican, all in huge numbers, and all new to me!... Gillian Smith, Bulgaria, September tour... A huge passage of Black Storks, Lesser Spotted Eagles and Common Buzzards brought Levant Sparrowhawk, Short-toed, Booted and a Spotted Eagle too amongst 19 different raptors for the trip - plus exuberant Bee-eaters dashing past and a quite loopy Nightjar! 8 When to Book This is one of the most Frequently Asked Questions - the short answer is as early as possible! Accommodation and flights are much more easily secured well in advance and there is nothing more frustrating than to know that on paper space is still available on the tour but that hotels and/or flights are full. To encourage early booking therefore, we are pleased to offer an Early Booking Discount - see our current brochure or website for details. Our tours are limited to small group sizes, so they can fill up quickly - sometimes even before our new brochure comes out! It's not unusual to find trips are fully booked around four to six months in advance. Single rooms in particular can often be in short supply and among the first to go, so do try to plan well ahead if you definitely require one of these. Last-minute bookings: We inevitably receive a few unexpected late cancellations over the course of a season so it is always worth enquiring about vacancies on any tour - even for those departing in just a few weeks time! Other Things You Need To Know Passports & Visas All participants must be in possession of a valid passport. For UK passport holders, for stays of up to three months, your passport must be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. Although no additional period of validity beyond this is required, when travelling anywhere overseas we always recommend that your passport has a minimum of 6 months left to run after your intended date of return home in case of unforeseen delay. VISA NOT REQUIRED by British citizens to enter Bulgaria. If you have a different type of British nationality, check entry requirements with the Bulgarian Embassy in London before you travel to see if you need a visa. World Travel Guide website has useful information: Holders of non-uk passports - including British subjects as noted above - should contact their nearest Bulgarian embassy or consulate to enquire whether or not they require a visa. If a visa is required, you will need to apply locally. If the embassy or consulate requires you to provide a letter confirming that you are booked on an all-inclusive tour, please contact our office and we will be happy to provide one. Health & Vaccinations Compulsory vaccinations: None. Recommended vaccinations: For travel everywhere (even within the UK) we recommend you check you are up-to-date with protection against tetanus, polio and hepatitis A. Check with your doctor for current advice as regards the need for protection against typhoid, diphtheria, hepatitis B and tick-borne encephalitis, which may sometimes be recommended for eastern Europe. The above information, together with that contained within our Travel Information sheets (sent to everyone who books), outlines health requirements for this tour. Please note that these details are given for guidance only - and are only for certain diseases - and you must consult your doctor in good time prior to travel as to what immunisations (if any) are needed for your chosen holiday. 8 Any questions? Please call: +44 (0) Or see:

For full and up-to-date health information we urge everyone to consult The National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) website prior to booking any overseas holiday. NaTHNaC is funded by the UK Government s Health Protection Agency and provides health information for both health professionals and travellers, with information compiled by its own clinical and scientific team. You can search for your individual country requirements, which are updated regularly. Your Safety & Travel Advice An unavoidable aspect of travelling abroad nowadays is the threat it may pose to your safety and security. The UK s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) encourages British nationals to be better prepared for their overseas trips with a view to avoiding common travelling traumas, risks and dangers. In order for you to assess and protect against any risks in your chosen destination it is strongly recommended that you refer to the relevant FCO Travel Advice both prior to booking and regularly before you travel. It is standard Limosa policy for our office to send a copy of the relevant FCO Travel Advice about the tour to all participants along with their Final Letter (2-4 weeks prior to the trip). Further useful information on visas, health, etc., can be found at the World Travel Guide website: Know Before You Go - staying safe and healthy abroad - is a travel safety campaign run by the FCO, and another useful resource. Go to: Travel Insurance Good travel insurance is essential before setting off on any overseas trip. In common with all responsible tour operators, it is a condition of booking that all clients are fully and adequately insured before travelling overseas with us. Your travel insurance should cover against cancellation, curtailment, missed departure, delay, personal accident, death, loss of baggage and valuables (see note below), personal liability and legal expenses. Most importantly, your insurance must cover you fully in respect of medical care and repatriation should you become too ill to continue with the tour, including the cost of emergency evacuation by helicopter or air ambulance should this be necessary. Note that passenger liability insurance covering the transportation that we hire, particularly in Third World countries, may be inadequate; it is therefore important that your insurance cover includes sufficient provision for your dependents in the event of an accident. We recommend that you obtain travel insurance as soon as possible after booking your holiday to ensure you are protected right from the word go in the event of unexpected cancellation prior to departure due to accident or illness. You must inform your insurers of any pre-existing medical conditions (including those of persons not necessarily travelling but upon whom your holiday may depend) that may require treatment during a period of overseas travel or might cause you to cancel the trip. Once you have arranged your insurance, please be sure to send us the following essential details: name and contact details of your insurance provider, your policy number, expiry date and your insurers 24hr Emergency Assistance number. Important Things to Note! Be aware that Travel Insurance does not normally provide sufficient cover for valuable optical equipment, which is often best protected under your own household insurance policy. If in doubt ask your insurers for advice prior to travel. 9 Any questions? Please call: +44 (0) Or see:

Most travel insurance policies limit the amount of cover, typically up to a maximum tour cost of 5000 per person. If the tour you are booking exceeds this amount, additional cover can usually be provided upon payment of additional premium. We recommend all travellers check their individual policy limit to ensure the full cost of their holiday is covered. Arranging Your Insurance: due to UK Government legislation, under Financial Services Authority (FSA) regulations, we are not allowed to offer or recommend travel related insurance to customers. Premiums can vary widely according to your age, needs, health, choice of destination and other factors, while many people nowadays have Annual Travel Insurance cover. For these reasons, we leave you free to shop around and pick your own policy, one best suited to your own individual needs. General Information Our website gives easy access to detailed tour itineraries (Tour Info Packs), trip reports, trip photos and the latest Limosa News. Special Diets & Other Requests We pass on all such requests to the airlines, hotels and other suppliers, and do our best to ensure (but of course cannot guarantee) that your needs will be met. Please be sure to tell us about these (in as much detail as possible) at the time of booking, to allow good time to make the necessary arrangements. Smoking Almost all of our clients prefer a smoke-free environment. For the enjoyment and comfort of all, we ask that smokers refrain from smoking in proximity to the group and respect our NO SMOKING policy in the vehicle, at meal times and when watching wildlife. Any Questions? If you have any questions at any time, you ll find our office staff friendly, efficient, approachable - and just a phone call away, eager to assist you in every way. Our office is open hrs Mon-Fri, and can also be reached by fax and . In the event we are unable to take your call, please leave a message on our answerphone (24 hrs) and our office will contact you as soon as we can. Thank you for your interest in our tours. We do hope that you will be able to join us - and we look forward to hearing from you again! CKBS Any questions? Please call: +44 (0) Or see:
