3 ITINERARY Day 1: Saturday 11 Aug. Early morning departure aboard our own comfortable, pressurized private airplane from Melbourne to Mt Isa (Qld). From the airport we ll head straight to the rocky spinifex habitats surrounding Mt Isa for our first chance of Kalkadoon Grasswren. Other good birds possible in this area are Black-tailed Treecreeper, Spinifexbird, Spinifex Pigeon and many more. Accommodation: Abacus Motel, Mt Isa (en-suite motel room; meals; L, D). Day 2: Sunday 12 Aug. We ll spend the full day around Mt Isa searching for Kalkadoon and Carpentarian Grasswren. Another drawcard here is Painted Finch which we ve seen on most prior visits. We ll also spend time looking for other good species of the area, including Spinifex Pigeon, Little Woodswallow, Spinifexbird, the Cloncurry race of Australian Ringneck, Spinifexbird and Varied Lorikeet. We ll visit the sewage pond, with chance of Plumed Whistling Ducks and other waterfowl. Accommodation: Abacus Motel, Mt Isa (en-suite motel rooms; meals: B, L, D). Day 3: Monday 13 Aug. After some more morning birding we ll fly to Alice Springs. We ll head into the Eastern MacDonnell Ranges for our best chance at some of the tricky spinifex species. Prime targets are the tiny Rufouscrowned Emuwren, Spinifexbird, Crimson Chat, and Painted Finch. We ll bird all the way into the picturesque Trephina Gorge for an easy walk to search for another local specialty: Dusky Grasswren. Other species we may find here include Australian Owlet-nightjar, Red-browed Pardalote, Western Bowerbird, and the gorgeous Golden-backed race of Black-chinned Honeyeater. We ll have lunch in the famous Olive Pink Botanic Garden, with its resident Greycrowned Babblers, Western Bowerbirds and many honeyeaters. We ll then visit Simpson s Gap where we ll take a gentle stroll looking for Slaty-backed Thornbill, Western Gerygone, Redthroat, and another chance at seeing Dusky Grasswrens and Painted Finches and this is a common place to find Peregrine Falcon hunting Little Woodswallows above the soaring cliffs. Black-footed Rock Wallabies often come down from the slopes to drink. Accommodation: Chifley Hotel, Alice Springs (en-suite hotel rooms; meals: B, L, D). Day 4: Tuesday 14 Aug. A short flight this morning from Alice Springs to Uluru (Ayers Rock) which includes a close-up scenic view of this famous landmark. Today s main target is the recently-split Sandhill Grasswren (was oweni Spinifex Pigeon, Australian Pratincole, Birding, Black-breasted Buzzard, Dusky Grasswren P Waanders
4 ssp of Striated) in the sandy spinifex-covered sand dunes. Other birds we may see today include Spinifex Pigeon, Banded Whiteface, Cinnamon Quail-thrush, Ground Cuckoo-shrike, Major Mitchell Cockatoo and there is a small chance of Grey Honeyeater and other nomadic inland honeyeaters and Inland Dotterel. Optional sunset-viewing at Uluru / Ayers Rock this evening. Accommodation: Pioneer Outback Lodge, Uluru (en-suite hotel rooms; meals: B, L, D). Day 5: Wednesday 15 Aug. If needed, another chance for Sandhill Grass-wren or any other birding this morning before our flight to the Pilbara region in north-west WA. After landing on the extreme western edge of the Australian continent near Newman we head straight out into the bush to look for Pilbara Grasswren, another recent split from Striated (was ssp. whitei). One of the other drawcards here is Chiming Wedgebill, while we also stand a good chance of Painted Finch, Grey-headed Honeyeater and Slaty-backed Thornbill. Accommodation: Seasons Hotel, Newman (en-suite hotel rooms; meals: B,L,D). Day 6: Thursday 16 Aug. If needed, another chance for Pilbara Grasswren or any other birds desired but we d like to make an early departure to nearby bird hotspot Broome. From our base at the famous Broome Bird Observatory we ll explore famous Roebuck Bay and neighbouring areas in search of waders (with chance of Asian Dowitcher, Broadbilled Sandpiper and who knows: Common Redshank) and other shorebirds, while Striated Heron, Eastern Reef Egret, White-breasted and Mangrove Whistler, Broad-billed Flycatcher, Dusky Gerygone, Red-headed Honeyeater, Yellow White-eye and many, many more excellent birds! Accommodation: Broome Bird Observatory (basic motel rooms with shared facilities; meals: B, L, D). Day 7: Friday 17 Aug. We ll bird the morning around the Bird Observatory, then an exciting and scenic flight over the Kimberley awaits us to reach Drysdale Station, centrally located in the remote Kimberley. Arriving at Drysdale, we ll check into our accommodation and have lunch, then spend the afternoon birding the local area. Species we may encounter here include Purple-crowned Fairy-wren, Long-tailed and Crimson Finch, Northern Shriketit, Banded, Bar-breasted, Yellow-tinted Honeyeater, Silver-crowned Friarbird and more. Accommodation: Drysdale Station (basic motel rooms with shared facilities; meals: B, L, D). Painted Finch, Rufous-crowned Emuwren, G Jones, Gouldian Finch L Ross
5 Day 8: Saturday 18 Aug. Today we ll search for Black Grasswren. Our plane will take us to the Mitchell Falls airstrip (15min) from where we ll be helicoptered (15min) to the Mitchell Falls area, enjoying a stunning view of the falls on the way. We ll spend most of the day exploring the landscape here, with its mix of tall grasses interspersed with huge boulders, and spinifex-clad slopes. Having found the Black Grasswren, we ll turn our focus to other birds, such as Kimberley Honeyeater, Chestnut-quilled Rock Pigeon, Partridge Pigeon, Buff-sided Robin and more. At the end of the day, we ll return to laid-back Drysdale. Accommodation: Drysdale Station, Kimberley (basic motel rooms with shared facilities; meals: B, L, D). Day 9: Sunday 19 Aug. We ll spend the morning birding around Drysdale Station with further chances of Kimberley Honeyeater, as well as other good birds such as Crested (Northern) Shrike-tit, Purple-crowned Fairy-wren and Banded Honeyeater. We ll then hit the skies again heading to Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. This is one of Australia s most famous National Parks and is host to a suite of rare birds and impressive scenery. Our base will be Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge just outside Kakadu NP. After lunch, an important decision awaits us! From Point Stuart, participants can choose to either leisurely bird in/around Kakadu NP with our professional local guide, or undertake a camping expedition to our own secret White-throated Grasswren location, recently found by our local guide. Option 1: Kakadu guided birding: Days : Sun 19, Mon 20, Tue 21 August. During these days we ll bird the swamps and lagoons in Mary River NP and Kakadu NP for birds including Great-billed Heron and Little Kingfisher, while there is a small chance of Red Goshawk and Pacific Baza. Other species we could encounter here include Black Bittern, Large-tailed Nightjar, Buff-sided Robin, Grey Goshawk and Bar-breasted Honeyeater. During these days we ll also bird some of the Arnhem Land escarpment country for Chestnut-quilled Rock-pigeon and Partridge Pigeon, and with luck, the elusive Black-banded Pigeon. Other possibilities here include Top End endemics such as Whitelined Honeyeater and Sandstone Shrike-thrush. Woodland birds won t be forgotten with Varied Lorikeet, Silver-crowned Friarbird, Rufous-throated and Banded Honeyeaters and Black-tailed Treecreeper all possible whereas a visit the wetlands should yield Green Pygmy-goose and Wandering and Plumed whistling-duck. And of course there s always a chance of Gouldian Finches! Accommodation: Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge, outside Kakadu NP (en-suite motel rooms; meals: B, L, D). White-quilled Rock Pigeon P Waanders, Rainbow Pitta L Ross, Australian Bustard P Waanders (continue to next page for Day 12)
6 Option 2: White-throated Grasswren expedition: Days : Sun 19, Mon 20, Tue 21 August. The White-throated Grasswren 3-day expedition will involve 4WD ing into the wilderness for as far as we can, then trekking on foot, and camping for two nights. Your guides will carry most of the supplies but you will be required to help carry some of the gear. However, you won t regret it! Along the way there are plenty of other good birds to be found; Rainbow Pitta, White-lined Honeyeater, Sandstone Shrike-thrush, Banded Fruit-dove and Buff-sided Robin are all possibilities over the next couple of days. After 4WD ing and trekking to the site, we ll set up camp and enjoy a nice meal while watching the myriad of stars shining, more brilliantly here than anywhere you ve been before. You ll climb into your tents for a restful night. Accommodation: camping (two nights; private tents; meals included: B, L, D). We ll spend the entire next day searching for the most elusive of all Grasswrens: White-throated Grasswren. This won t be a walk in the park: there are no tracks, we ll be getting scratched traversing the spinifex, getting hot while clambering over boulders, but hopefully, getting very excited upon viewing these magnificent birds! At the end of the day we ll retire to our tents after another campfire-cooked meal for a well-earned rest. After lunch on Tuesday 21 August we retrace our tracks back and return to Cooinda where we ll check into a comfortable room for a welcome shower and join the rest of the group for a well-deserved meal. Accommodation: Cooinda Lodge, Kakadu NP (en-suite motel rooms; meals: B, L, D). The entire group then reunites for Day 12: Day 12: Wednesday 22 Aug. Today we travel back to Melbourne with fuel stops and a lunch stop along the way: Cooinda Katherine Alice Springs Leigh Creek Melbourne. Total flight time approx. 7 hrs. Meals included: B, L. Pre-tour options: Commencing with dinner on Wednesday 1 Aug we ll be running our Nine Grasswren Tour from Adelaide to Mt Isa. You can link these 2 tours, in that case you ll arrive in Mt Isa on Sat 11 Aug as part of the Nine Grasswren tour. One of Australia s epic birding adventures, during the Nine Grasswren tour we search for nine of Australia s 13 Grasswren species: Striated, Short-tailed, Western, Thick-billed, Eyrean, Grey, Kalkadoon, Carpentarian and Rusty Grasswren. We ll explore the Mallee scrub in SA, the Flinders Ranges, Birdsville track, the stark country around Boulia-Winton to finish around Mt Isa. This trip is a real adventure (yet fully accommodated), we expect to see some 200 species, and besides the Grasswrens we have a good chance of sought-after birds like Red-lored Whistler, Banded and Chestnut-breasted Whiteface, Chestnut and Cinnamon Quail-thrush, Gibberbird, Yellow Chat, Inland Dotterel, Flock Bronzewing, the enigmatic Grey Falcon... If you wish to join the Nine Grasswren Tour in conjunction with the Great Northern Tour you ll also be eligible for an immediate $1,000 off the total price of both tours! /nine-grasswren-tour/
