Design Guide Host: Nikki Mueller 2008 TVWeekly, Inc.
Nikki joins our team with a great jewelry project The common denominator for beads is that they all have a hole in them. From there, they can be made from a myriad of materials and Nikki is here to show us one of her favorite mediums for bead-making paper! Let your imagination go wild with all the textures and colors of paper available in today s world. Rolling along! FEATURED PRODUCTS Club Scrap Paper Bead-Making Kit from Club Stamp s Great Outdoors Kit Bead Template Papers Beading Cord Closure for Bracelet 2 Wooden Dowels Bookbinding Adhesive Foam Brush Tree Stamp from Great Outdoors Kit Tools: Small Scissors Embossing Heat Tool Tray with sides to hold Embossing Powder Jewelry Pliers Supplies: Square of Floral Foam Clear Embossing Inkpad Gold Embossing Powder Wax Paper Bijou Beadery 1 Find the grain of the paper you are working with. Start with the Great Outdoors Red Plain paper from Club Scrap. Hold the short side with your thumb and forefinger. Let the other side of the paper dip naturally toward the table or work surface. Turn the paper one-quarter turn and hold the long end with your thumb and forefinger. Let the other end of the paper dip naturally toward the table. Whichever end tips toward the table more is the direction of the grain. Roll all beads with the grain. 1
Position the Red Plain paper on the work surface. Place the Bead Template from Club Stamp s Great Outdoors Kit on the Red Plain Paper (in the direction of the grain) and trace the beads you want to make with a permanent marker. 2 Repeat with Dark Green Plain paper from the Great Outdoors Kit and a permanent marker until you have enough beads to create a 7 ½" bracelet. Adjust the bracelet length to size, as needed. Cut each of the bead shapes out with a small pair of scissors. The Bead Template from Club Stamp s Great Outdoors Kit makes four different types of beads in three different sizes. Create a variety of beads for your bracelet using Red Plain, Dark Green Plain and other coordinating papers 3 Condition paper by running through fingers a couple of times to train paper the direction you want it to roll. To begin rolling the beads, place a piece of wax paper on the work surface and start with an isosceles triangle in Plain Red. Place the triangle on the wax paper with the flat end toward you and the point away from you. Place a fingertip on the flat end of the triangle. Spread a thin line of Bookbinding Adhesive from Club Scrap down the middle of the triangle being careful to avoid gluing the flat end your fingertip is covering. Spread the glue to cover the rest of the bead with a foam brush.
Place a wooden dowel, included in the kit from Club Stamp, in the middle of the glue-less flat end of the triangle. Begin rolling the bead tightly toward the pointed tip. Go slowly at first, being sure to get a tight roll. 4 Burnish the tip of the triangle into the bead with your finger, being sure to get a good bond. Let bead dry on dowel. Nikki recommends a floral foam square to hold dowels full of beads to dry. If you don t have that, a bowl of dry rice or dry beans works well too! 5 Make Gold Accent beads. Roll one dry bead (still on dowel) over an inkpad of clear embossing ink, being sure to cover the bead completely. Place the bead on the edge of a tray to catch the embossing powder. Sprinkle gold embossing powder over the whole bead, turning as you go, for complete coverage. Heat with an embossing heat tool to melt the gold embossing powder. Continue with other bead shapes until you have a variety of gold accent beads. 3
6 & Create Art Deco beads. Ink the tree branch stamp from Club Scrap s Great Outdoors Kit with clear embossing ink. Place on work surface, inked-rubber side up. Roll tube bead (still on dowel) over inked image one rotation only, so as not to repeat the image. Place dowel on edges of tray that will hold embossing powder. Sprinkle gold embossing powder over the bead, rolling the dowel so bead is covered completely. Heat with an embossing tool to melt the powder. 7 As you work and create Gold Accent Beads and Art Deco Beads sort them into a recycled egg carton according color and shape. When you have enough beads made, it s time to make them into jewelry. 8 Make the bracelet. Cut a piece of cord, included in the Paper Bead-Making Kit from Club Stamp to desired length (to fit around wrist for bracelet). Add closure of choice to one end of cord; attach with jump ring, crimp bead, or knot - depending on type of closure used. Place a sequence of paper beads in a pleasing manner on the work surface. Thread beads onto cord. Attach other end of closure clasp to end of cord. Use jewelry pliers as needed. 4
PRECIOUS PENDANT Nikki found a great donut pendant in a small boutique on a recent trip. With that as the focal piece, she surrounded the pendant with paper beads including Gold Accent beads and Art Deco beads along with some wooden beads. A matching bracelet completes this set. FLANIGAN Paper beads have found their way onto a photo frame to highlight a great picture of Flanigan. Coordinating ribbon adds a colorful accent to the flower petals which are paper beads! Congratulations! You ve just completed your Paper Bead Jewlery, but the fun doesn t stop there! Be sure to stop back by Plum & Verdigris every week for more exciting new twists on jewlery making!
