1 7th Grade Scope And Sequence Timeframe Unit Instructional Topics Course Description In seventh grade Family and Consumer science, students review nutrition, measuring techniques, use of equipment, recipe term, safety, sanitation, and etiquette while experiencing a variety of activities in the foods laboratory. In the clothing unit, students review sewing procedures and techniques, acquire further knowledge of fabrics, making a project using the sewing machine, and a project using hand sewing skills. Throughout the sewing section, care of clothing and laundry skills are discussed. Course Rationale This course promotes lifelong skills that will help students see the value of cost saving activities and experience ways to improve their appearance and health. Students will gain confidence as a consumer by developing their cooking skills and creating individual sewing projects. Board Approval Date None available. For a given period of time using a limited number of calories, students compare and contrast specific food choices that have both positive and negative impact on your personal goals. 3. Using "My Pyramid" guidelines, students construct a healthy individual activity and eating plan. 4. Students select an extreme diet and trace the short term and long term effects on the individual. 5. Students compare nutrition labels of similar products to make informed decisions. 6. Students select a specific influence and describe how it affects their personal eating habits. The student will evaluate outside influences on food choices. The student will explain the effects of specific nutrients on their body. The student will make healthy choices based on nutrition label information. Unit: Consumer Responsibility Learning how to shop on a budget, using various techniques, can help you family save money while continuing to make nutritious choices. How can using smart shopping strategies help you make nutritious choices while staying within a budget? When given a budget and nutritional guidelines, students create a nutritious meal for a family. Serving size Topic: Consumer Responsibility The student will apply shopping strategies to make nutritious choices on a budget. Unit: Dining Etiquette Using proper table manners and table setting will help me in certain social situations. What are the personal benefits of using proper manners in certain situations? Students create a specific social situation to practice proper table setting and manners. Topic: Dining Etiquette The student will demonstrate proper table setting and meal time manners. Unit: Kitchen Introduction Using the correct tools and equipment when cooking will create ease while working in the kitchen. How will using the proper tool or piece of equipment make preparing a recipe easier and measurements more accurate? Given a recipe, students select and use the right piece of equipment or tool to best complete the various given tasks. Topic: Kitchen Introduction The student will demonstrate proper use of kitchen tools and equipment. Unit: Safety and Sanitation Page 2

Given a scenario in which a person was injured or became sick due to unsafe kitchen practices, students analyze the cause of the problem and provide appropriate solutions. Using proper measurement techniques increase the likelihood of a successful outcome. 2. Following the recipe as written increases the likelihood of a successful outcome. 3. Properly adjusting ingredient amounts to fit the servings needed leads to success in the final product. 1. What are the possible consequences to a recipe when measuring ingredients incorrectly? 2. What are the possible consequences to the recipe when it is not prepared as written? 3. What are the possible consequences if yield is not correctly adjusted throughout recipe? 1. When following a recipe that does not have accurate measurement techniques, students specifically describe what should have been corrected to produce a good product. 2. After preparing a recipe without following the written instructions, students, describe specifically what should have been done to produce a good product. 3.
