1 General Finishes Get the Look for Less: Recreate Trending Finishes with Paint & Glaze Taught by Rachel Gingold of Artistic Home Studio Course Overview: INTRO: Where do we find the latest trends? Popular retail stores HGTV shows Magazines Stagers Designers Bloggers, Social Media Mood / Personal Preference - ask customers! What we are seeing: Neutrals are the most popular trend! Grays, wood, white & black, rustic industrial styles are really trendy Neutrals pair well with many different styles & tastes. Can commit to a neutral piece of furniture and change up accents. Popular Furniture Finishes that can be re-created easily with GF paint & glaze: 1. Rustic Wood Grain (reclaimed wood) 2. Hammered Zinc 3. Rustic/Farmhouse Distressed 4. Black, White, Slightly Distressed Demo: Rustic Wood Grain (Reclaimed Wood) Base colors depend on color of wood you re trying to replicate; Millstone & Seagull Gray Milk Paint are two great options for base colors. Dry brush with glazes to create wood grain, highlights and shadows. Additional wood colors can be mixed with clear base to create additional color tones. 3 Demo: Hammered Zinc Base color: Queenstown Gray Milk Paint Crumpled shop towel or lint-free rag used for blotting Create a wash with Argentine Pearl Effects (for a shiny metal) or Seagull Gray Milk Paint (for a dull metal). Wash is 2-parts water, 1-part paint/pearl Effects. Brush on wash, blot with a crumpled shop towel. Finish with topcoat; flat for a dull finish; semi-gloss for a shiny finish. 4 Start with a wood substrate. If not, glaze or stain to get the base color to match wood. Use candle wax between layers for heavy distressing. Layer 3-4 colors, let dry between each coat & apply wax in random areas. Once final color is dry, sand back with a damp Scotch Brite sponge. (Sand within an hour or two of the last layer of paint.) Colors used in demo: Antique White, Millstone and Driftwood Milk Paint. Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects is great for antiquing this look. Finish with Flat out Flat for a more authentic wood finish. 5 Demo: Cracked Leather Base coat Queenstown Gray Milk Paint. Let dry. Apply a wash of Millstone Milk Paint mixed with water (equal parts). Blot with crumpled newsprint. Let dry. Brush on Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects. Blot with crumpled plastic wrap. Let dry. Brush on Burnt Umber Glaze Effects. Blot with crumpled plastic wrap. Alternate glazes and texture until cracked leather look is achieved. Topcoat with High Performance Satin. 6 Base coat Tawny Pearl Effects. Let dry. Paint 2 coats of Lamp Black Milk Paint. Let dry. Lightly distress edges & high points of molding just enough to reveal gold beneath using a 220 sanding pad and a damp cloth. Topcoat with High Performance Satin.
