3 Mission and Tradition Politecnico Calzaturiero is the heir of Riviera del Brenta footwear tradition, started in 1923 when the School of Arts and Jobs was created; the School of Arts and Jobs has become the School of Design and Technique of shoe, where participants study with the aim of becoming patternmakers. The School is still active, it has more than 150 students every year and training to about the 90% of the District employees. Since 1923 Politecnico Calzaturiero has represented a model at a National and an International level thanks to some important characteristics; our teachers design and produce the most famous shoe brands in the world; their experience and professionalism permit an every updated teaching plan. The School has developed a strong relationship with the companies of the footwear sector; this synergy permit to our students to find easily an internship and a job at the end of the study. Politecnico Calzaturiero has received numerous national and international awards and it works in a network which includes Schools, Universities, International Institutes; the School has developed different partnership agreements with some International Institutions, such as the Nigerian Government, the Parson School of New York, the Guangzhou Panyu Polytechnic and many other European partners involved in EU funded projects. Our future strategies aim to make Politecnico a recognized worldwide school, a Riviera del Brenta District resource of innovation, an internationalization driver, a place of industrial tourism, an incubator of new business. 3

7 COURSES STRUCTURE FOOTWEAR Sector Courses At the School of Design and Technique of Shoes there is a range of Basic and Specialized courses: PATTERN-MAKING Courses The Pattern-Making Courses provide students with the basic knowledge needed to work like pattern-makers and technicians in a footwear company. Students can choose between two educational paths: CLASSICAL PATTERN-MAKING: Basic Classical Pattern-Making Advanced Classical Pattern-making SPORT AND FREE TIME PATTERN-MAKING: Basic Classical Pattern-making Sport and Free time Pattern-making At the end of the course the student receives the Certificate of Attendance and Profit. SPECIALIZATION COURSES for patternmakers and footwear technicians During the Specialization Courses students learn about Stylistic Design and Industrialization of products, with hand- procedure and by the use of new technologies (2D/3D CAD systems, Rapid Prototyping). Conceptual Design Models and Structure Industrialization Cad 2D/3D Luxury handmade Footwear Course At the end of the course the student receives the SPECIALIZATION DIPLOMA: Footwear Fashion Designer, Models and Structures Technician, CAD 2D/3D specialist Applicants BASIC COURSE Employed and unemployed people interested in acquiring the basic skills needed to design footwear models. The basic course requires good dexterity design ability and a basic understanding of technical subjects. SPECIALIZATION COURSES Students that acquired the Certificate of Attendance and Profit as pattern makers and footwear technicians and/or that acquired the basic skills necessary to attend the training. In the second case knowledge will be verified by a written test. 7

8 Ist year - BASIC CLASSICAL PATTERN-MAKING FOOTWEAR Sector Courses Objective To provide students with the technical basic competences needed to work in the design and industrial fields of footwear. At the end of the training the students will be able to draw on paper and on the last; they will learn to develop the below models studied during the years: décolleté buttoned shoe oxford derby moccasin low boot sandal. Also, he/she acquires the knowledge about the structure and the organization of the footwear sector and about the different typologies of the products, materials and components used. Contents STYLISTIC DESIGN: basic drawing techniques, volumes, color effects, orthogonal projection, free hand and last design, foot anatomy, lasts proportions, design of different footwear models. BY HAND TECHNICAL PATTERN-MAKING: development of upper, lining and reinforcement moulds of basic models, technical documents preparation. PROCESSES/MATERIALS TECHNOLOGIES: basic knowledge of footwear structure, components, materials and processes of design and production. Workshop on Quality System and Company Organization. Factory Visits to last-making companies, sole and insole factories, hell companies, tanneries, footwear enterprises. 9 IInd Year - ADVANCED CLASSICAL PATTERN-MAKING FOOTWEAR Sector Courses Objective To provide students with technical basic competences needed to work in the design an industrialization of shoe. At the end of the training the student will be able to design some shoes basic models variations drawing on paper and on last and developing models parts by hand. Contents STYLISTIC DESIGN: techniques, colors application, graphic studies of components and accessories. PROFESSIONAL DESIGN: advanced techniques to technically draw variations to man/woman basic models on paper and on last, in order to acquire skills needed to build a mini-collection. BY HAND TECHNICAL PATTERN-MAKING: development of upper, lining and reinforcement moulds of the mini-collection models, technical documentation planning. PROCESSES TECHNOLOGIES: analysis of production processes (cutting, binding, lasting, finishing) of a specific shoe model defined by the teacher. Seminar about 2D/3D CAD Systems. 10 IInd Year - SPORT AND FREE TIME PATTERN-MAKING COURSE FOOTWEAR Sector Courses Objective To provide students with the advanced technical skills needed to work in the area of design and industrial fields of footwear. At the end of the course, the student will be able to technically design and realize the major sport models (football, soccer, tennis, running, basketball, hiking, etc.). In addition, he/she will be able to design and create a small collection of sport shoes. Contents PROFESSIONAL DESIGN: advanced techniques to design and realize sport shoe models; the student will learn to produce a small collection based on a trend analysis. BY HAND TECHNICAL PATTERN-MAKING: creation of upper and lining, production of technical documentation. CAD 2D TECHNICAL PATTERN-MAKING: development of shoes models with 2D CAD software use. MATERIAL PROCESS TECHNOLOGIES: advanced knowledge of the different types of sports footwear structures, components, materials, design processes and production phases. Visits at Silk-Screen Printing Companies and Molds Pattern-making Companies. 11 INTENSIVE CLASSICAL PATTERN-MAKING FOOTWEAR Sector Courses I MODULE - CLASSICAL PATTERN-MAKING COURSE Objective To provide students with technical basic competences needed to work in the design and industrialization of shoe. At the end of the training the students will be able to draw on paper and on the last; the trainee learns to develop the models studied during the years: décolleté buttoned shoe oxford derby moccasin low boot sandal. Moreover, he/she acquires the knowledge about the structure and the organization of the footwear sector and about the different typologies of the products, materials and components used. 12 III YEAR - SPECIALIZATION COURSES FOR DESIGNERS AND TECHNICIANS CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOOTWEAR Sector Courses Objective To provide students with the technical and stylistic competences required to develop a graphic collection project; scholar learns to make prototypes developed on the basis of a personalized interpretation of the following year Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer fashion trends. At the end of the training, the student will be able to: - identify information regarding the market and the fashion trend; - develop a collection plan; - develop prototypes and models; - present their personal collection through a multimedia channel. Contents STYLISTIC DESIGN: Fashion Market Trend Study, Planning Methodology, Stylistic Design, Advanced Footwear and Accessories Graphics. EDITING: Use of software application for the management of images, and multimedia presentation of Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer collection. MARKETING: market and requirements analysis. FASHION COMMUNICATION: fashion communication instrument, fashion as social capital. 13 III YEAR - SPECIALIZATION COURSES FOR DESIGNERS AND TECHNICIANS INDUSTRIAL MODELS AND STRUCTURAL TECHNICIAN COURSE FOOTWEAR Sector Courses Objective To provide students with the knowledge needed to make the model (upper, lining, counters) and the structure (last, heel, insole and sole). At the end of the course, the student will be able to make shoe components using 2D and 3D CAD software. Also, how to rapid prototype and technically develop the prototypes of the studied models. Contents MODEL INDUSTRIALISATION: last design, upper development, lining and reinforcement molding, cutting coordination, binding and lasting phases, flaw analysis and consecutive mold corrections, technical document planning. STRUCTURAL INDUSTRIALISATION: main shoe components typologies and features, Insole Development, heel and sole creation with 2D and 3D CAD software, realizing the digital last, technical document planning. PROCESSES MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION: company organization, design and production processes, workings, technologies, materials, technical and procedural documentation. Technologies for the PDM and PLM management processes. Visits to shoe factories. Contents NEW TECHNOLOGIES: computer notions, CAD 2D/3D software learning. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS AND STRUCTURES: prototypes with rapid prototyping technologies. Laboratory: Exercises on standard models and development of templates. 15 III YEAR - SPECIALIZATION COURSES FOR DESIGNERS AND TECHNICIANS LUXURY HANDMADE FOOTWEAR COURSE FOOTWEAR Sector Courses Objective To provide students with the practical and technical skills required to create both men and women footwear models by hand. Also, how to properly finish the shoe for wear. Contents PATTERN MAKING: - Model 1: Man, Slipper Blake working - Model 2: Hand-sewn Slipper for man, Goodyear Welt working - Model 3: Derby, Goodyear Welt working - Model 4: Oxford, Blake working - Model 5: Moccasin for woman - Model 6: Moccasin for man lasted and stitched by hand Particular attention will be paid to the last design, the development of the base model and the creation of prototypes. The prototypes will be tested by both hand and machine assembly. LABORATORY: - Cutting, binding and lasting of designed models - Upper assembly techniques - Blake machine working with hand sewing - Goodyear Welt working with hand sewing - Goodyear Welt full of derby - Bolognese working on oxford, insole hand-stitched with the upper and Blake sewing - Hand sewing on woman moccasin - Hand sewing moccasins for man lasted and stitched by hand. 17 HANDMADE BAG COURSE HANDMADE BAG Sector Courses Objective To provide students with basic skills needed in order to work in the area of design and product industrialization of a leather goods company. At the end of the course, the student will be able to design and develop technical manuals for the main bags models. In addition, students will learn the basic knowledge related to the styling and to the processes of machining and finishing. Contents STYLISTIC DESIGN content, drawing basic technique, point-line, volumes, colors techniques, orthogonal projections, freehand drawing, proportion of the lasts and design of the different types of bags. TECHNICAL PATTERN-MAKING: development of pattern molds for Women / men and preparation of technical documentation. TECHNOLOGY OF MATERIALS AND PROCESSES: product structure, materials and components (textiles, leather, accessories, reinforcements), types and characteristics of processes, structure and organization of the supply chain, production steps (cutting, assembly, finishing), quality control checking for materials and products. The main types of bags that will be studied are the following: Shopping bag, Clutch, Handbag, Cross-body bag, XL bag, Shoulder, Clutch Bag, Leather drawstring bag, hobo bag, backpack with shoulder strap.
