1 57. Life Skill Subject for Junior High School (SMP)/ Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) (Islamic Junior High School) A. Background The attempt to develop quality human beings that are ready to face various life challenges begins as early as possible through education. Educational activities are provided among others through a number of subjects that are intended to give meaningful and various learning experience to learners. Not all SMP/MTs graduates continue their education to a higher level, some of them have to work to earn income for their family. Therefore, Life skill subject needs to be taught to learners at SMP/MTs level. Life skill subject is directed to enable learners to develop their life skills including personal skill, social skill, pre-vocational skill, and academic skill. Emphasis on type of skills chosen by education unit needs to consider learners interests and talents as well as local potential, cultural environment, economic condition and regional needs. Personal and social skills are needed by all learners, academic skill is needed by those who will continue their education to a higher level and pre-vocational skill is needed by those who will work. Pre-vocational skill gives opportunity to learners to be involved in
2 various appreciation experiences and to be creative to produce creations that are directly useful for their lives. All learning activities give supply to learners to be adaptive, creative and innovative through learning experience that emphasizes on physical and mental activities. Learners make interaction with handicraft and technological products in their environment to be able to create various types of handicraft or technological products. Orientation of pre-vocational skill learning is to facilitate emotional, intellectual, physical, perceptional, social, aesthetic, artistic experiences and learners creativity by performing appreciation and creation activities toward various products. These activities begin from identification of potentials around learners to be changed into products that are useful for the life of human beings. Learning is designed systematically through stages of imitating, modifying, and changing of function of existing products toward new products that are more useful. The following competency standard and basic competency are one of learning alternatives that can be given by schools/islamic schools. Every education unit can offer other skill subjects that are in accordance with learners interests and talents as well as local
3 potential, cultural environment, economic condition and regional needs, with competency standard and basic competency developed independently. B. Objectives Pre-vocational skill subject is intended for learners to be able to have the following abilities. 1. to be able to develop knowledge and skill to make various handicraft products and technological products that are useful for the life of human beings 2. to have sense of aesthetics, appreciation to handicraft products, technological products, and artifacts from various regions in Indonesia or in the world 3. to be able to identify local regional potential that can be developed through crafting activity and utilization of simple 4. to have professional and entrepreneurship attitude.
4 C. Scope Pre-vocational skill subject includes the following aspects. 1. Crafting skill 2. Utilization of simple that includes engineering, cultivation and processing 3. Entrepreneurship. Knowledge structure in life skill subject consists of type, form, procedure and function of handicraft and. Learning of this subject is integrated with knowledge that has been obtained by learners in other subjects.
