1 International trade in cultural goods Revised scope List of codes January

2 Introduction The list of internationally traded cultural goods was established on the basis of Harmonised Systems (HS) and Combined Nomenclature () classifications and according to the criteria set out in the ESSnet-Culture final report (2012). In the process of selection of cultural goods, numerous codes at the 8 digit of disaggregation were identified within the 10 cultural domains conceptualised in the ESSnet-Culture report (see page 44). The central selection criterion was artistic creation. The first list of cultural goods contained commodities aggregated into 11 meaningful groups and served for the compilation of statistics until 2015 (see Annex 1 International trade in cultural goods by old scope). In 2016, an extension of the cultural scope was agreed upon and implemented in international trade in cultural goods statistics in order to align with international developments and in particular with the UNESCO definition. This paper presents the detailed list of cultural goods composing a revised scope. For better follow-up of the revision, the newly added codes to the list are highlighted in red. The supplementary information about the validity period of the codes is also added. The revision of the scope consisted mainly of : Extension of the category hand-made fabrics with some hand-made ornamental articles; Creating a new category with jewellery articles; Extension of audio-visual categories; Split of audio-visual categories on music on the one side and film, video and video games on the other side. Table 1 presents the 12 cultural aggregates and table 2 displays the detailed list of cultural goods composing each aggregate. The list is based on and takes into account the revisions of the classification in order to keep the data series comparable since Table 1: Aggregates of cultural goods by new scope PROD_CT ANTQ Antiques; postage or revenue stamps; collections and collector's pieces ART Works of arts (paintings, engravings, sculpture, designs etc.) CRAFT Craft (handmade fabrics and ornamental articles) JEWLR Articles of jewellery (of precious and semi-precious metals and stones) BOOK Books NWPR Newspapers, journals and periodicals MAP Maps and hydrographical or similar charts PLAN Plans and drawings for architectural or other similar purposes PHOT Photographic plates and film, exposed and developed FILMVG Audio-visual and interactive media (films, videos, video games and consoles) RECMED Music in manuscript, gramophone records, recorded magnetic tapes and optical media (CDs) MUSI Musical instruments; parts and accessories thereof 2
