Fundamental activity to provide attractive, long-term funding to support excellent investigators and their research teams to pursue ground-breaking, high-gain/ high-risk research. Research funded by the ERC is expected to lead to advances at the frontiers of knowledge and to set a clear and inspirational target for frontier research across Europe. 21

FET in Horizon2020 Pathfinding Europe's technological future "Future and emerging technologies shall support collaborative research in order to extend Europe s capacity for advanced and paradigm-changing innovation. It shall foster scientific collaboration across disciplines on radically new, high-risk ideas and accelerate development of the most promising emerging areas of science and technology as well as the Union wide structuring of the corresponding scientific communities." 23

[Bottom-up approach] Research fields are freely chosen by the applicants, except: research activity aiming at human cloning for reproductive purposes research activity intended to modify the genetic heritage of human beings which could make such changes heritable research activities intended to create human embryos solely for the purpose of research or for the purpose of stem cell procurement, including by means of somatic cell nuclear transfer areas of research covered by the EURATOM Treaty
[Mobility rule] At the time of the relevant deadline for submission of proposals, or recruitment/secondment by the host organisation, depending on the action, researchers shall not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. 26

Industrial leadership Why: Strategic investments in key technologies (e.g. advanced manufacturing, micro-electronics) underpin innovation across existing and emerging sectors Europe needs to attract more private investment in research and innovation Europe needs more innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to create growth and jobs 31
Struttura del programma Excellent Science European Research Council Frontier research by the best individual teams Future and Emerging Technologies Collaborative research to open new fields of innovation Marie Skłodowska Curie actions Opportunities for training and career development Research infrastructures (including e-infrastructure) Ensuring access to world-class facilities Industrial Technologies Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies ICT, nanotechnologies, materials, biotechnology, manufacturing, space Access to risk finance Leveraging private finance and venture capital for research and innovation Innovation in SMEs Fostering all forms of innovation in all types of SMEs Societal Challenges Health, demographic change and wellbeing Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research & the bioeconomy Secure, clean and efficient energy Smart, green and integrated transport Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies Security society European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation Science with and for society Joint Research Center (JRC) 32

What are the KETs? Key Enabling Technologies The Commission defines KETs as knowledge intensive and associated with high R&D intensity, rapid innovation cycles, high capital expenditure and highly skilled employment. They enable process, goods and service innovation throughout the economy and are of systemic relevance. They are multidisciplinary, cutting across many technology areas with a trend towards convergence and integration. KETs can assist technology leaders in other fields to capitalise on their research efforts *Current situation of key enabling technologies in Europe, SEC (2009) Photonics Manufacturing Biotechnology Advanced Materials Micro/Nanoelectronics Nanotechnologies 34
Industrial Leadership/1 - ICT A new generation of components and systems: engineering of advanced embedded and resource efficient components and systems Next generation computing: advanced and secure computing systems and technologies, including cloud computing Future Internet: software, hardware, infrastructures, technologies and services Content technologies and information management: ICT for digital content, cultural and creative industries Advanced interfaces and robots: robotics and smart spaces Micro- and nanoelectronics and photonics: key enabling technologies 35
Industrial Leadership/2 - NMBP Advanced materials and Nanotechnologies for high added value products & process industries Advanced materials and Nanotechnologies for Healthcare Eco-design and new sustainable business models Biotechnology Modelling for the development of Nanotechnologies and Advanced Materials Science-based risk assessment and management of Nanotechnologies, Materials and Biotechnologies Innovative and responsible governance of new and converging enabling technologies Factories of the Future PPP Sustainable Process Industry PPP Energy-efficient Buildings PPP
Industrial Leadership/3 - SPACE
Industrial Leadership/3 Access to Risk Finance - Under the 'Industrial Leadership' pillar, this specific objective will help companies and other types of organisation engaged in research and innovation (R&I) to gain easier access, via financial instruments, to loans, guarantees, counter-guarantees and hybrid, mezzanine and equity finance. Innovation in SMEs - Horizon 2020 actively supports SMEs by providing both direct financial support, and indirect support to increase their innovation capacity. 'Innovation in SMEs' aims at creating a bridge between the core of the framework programme - support to research, development and innovation projects - and the creation of a favourable ecosystem for SME innovation and growth. 38

Societal challenges Why: Concerns of citizens and society/eu policy objectives (climate, environment, energy, transport, etc) cannot be achieved without innovation Breakthrough solutions come from multidisciplinary collaborations, including social sciences & humanities Promising solutions need to be tested, demonstrated and scaled up 40
